If one thinks Hunter had a good season (which I wholeheartedly disagree with) then I could see why one might think it'd be a good idea to sign him if the price is right.

The thing is, would Arcia replicate Torii's 2015 season...hit 20+ home runs, bat .235-.240, strikeout a lot, field and throw as well? You would like to think, Yes. And the Twins need to see more of Arcia before totally pulling the plug, if possible. If Buxton starts at AAA (which he probably should), then Torii could be the 4th outfielder (you can find another Robinson). If you rotate Sano with Plouffe (assuming Plouffe isn't traded), you have DH taken care of, with Torii also as a backup.Torii did bring something to the clubhouse and didn't embarass himself on-the-field. But we have too many outfielders (maybe) at the moment. At some point you commit to the future (Arcia and Buxton and Kepler)...which might mean we have further issues if a certain unnamed forst baseman doesn't return to his form...soon.

Prospects are just prospects until they make it big. If Buxton or Kepler are what you say they will be, then any good signing can be traded for value. It certainly makes sense to sign a bird in the hand than to constantly wait for the bird in the bush that may never come.

Any FA of the quality TD posters are looking will have multiple suitors and sign a 3-4 year deal.  You don't just go flipping them the 1st or even 2nd year.  When these players reach free agency, they want to pick where they go.  They surely don't want to be sent off a few months into a multi-year and have absolutely nothing to say about that new team.  They also simply don't want their lives uprooted when traded at a moments notice.  That's why so many of them ask for no trade clauses.  So, if you want to make it even more difficult to sign free agents then go ahead and treat them this way.

Why would I be trading these players if they are kicking butt and taking names? So far, Buxton and Kepler have not lit a fire in the major leagues, and gambling that they both will is a fool's bet.

 

I wanted the Twins to pick up one outfielder last off-season, and that was Nelson Cruz. It would have required a four year deal, and I would have expected him ro be around for most of them seasons. I like four year deals; I dislike eight year deals, so the Cruz deal with Seattle was one I could live with. It was medium risk for high reward potential. When Buxton or Kepler bat .300+ with 44 dingers, then we could complain how that deal was blocking them.

I feel like he'll change his mind and sign on for a part-time role. You can only take these quotes so far before they're completely removed of context and mood. I'd hate for people to judge everything I do on something I said spontaneously last month.

 

If he won't take a PT role, so long and thank you. It's rare for a player to say they embrace not playing and, if he said he wanted a job but not to play would you want him?

 

I guess I don't care either way. I think he's a fine 20-25th player on a roster. I do think they need a few vet bats on the team. I don't care if they start or what position they play, but people who have been through the grind and into the postseason offer a valuable perspective.

yup. That is pretty much the Crux of the issue, and honestly, hard to blame him. He has made a ton of money, had a great career and has two boys playing NCAA football, a one year 1-2 mil contract for a part time role almost seems like it wouldn't be worth it for him.

 

If he wants a full time gig, great, he can likely find a couple teams who would offer that, but the Twins, should not.
