Face of the Franchise (Jared & Subway)

I can’t say I am surprised to find out that Jared Fogle is a Child Pornography Collector and has paid under-aged girls to have relations with him (Child Molester). This guy is a sub-human and he is going up the river for a long time (5 years minimum – time served, not too certain of that). He seems like the kind of guy who will do well in prison… maybe a different kind of Subway Sandwich will be on his menu in the big house. I guess time will tell.

Anyone, who decides to eat Subway everyday to lose a couple hundred pounds has a few screws loose. (1) I am willing to bet that his weight loss story is mostly a lie in a dietary sense. (2) No one, I hope would eat that absolute garbage on a daily basis, let alone ever. (3) To me it has been one of the greatest jokes of the last 15 years that this guy has been the face of the Subway Sandwich Franchise. I am left dumbfounded by this, and I acknowledge that weight loss is a huge deal in the eyes of our consumers in this society. How did it last this long?

The first time I saw a commercial with him representing Subway was in 1999-2000.  It made total sense to me, because Subway is one of the worst sandwich establishments in the history of the United States and he seemingly added up to being the most pointless spokes person to sell a product I had ever seen. Obviously, I was wrong.

My first encounter with Subway was in the late 1980’s. I ate there with my parents and thought it sucked. That was no big deal as you win some and you lose some, but what would transpire in the few years following that experience was disastrous.

The premium Sub Sandwich place in the Twin Cities before Subway hit the scene was Clark’s Submarine Sandwiches, that place was great! As a 40 year old man, I still have day dreams of eating there. Unfortunately, that cannot happen because Subway had run Clark’s out of business by the early 90’s and I am sure they ran most local favorite Sub Sandwich shops out of business around the country. Subway ruined sub sandwiches just like Dominos ruined pizza. I remember a time when Pizza Hut was a sit down family restaurant and their product was really good.

Obviously, I have a gripe or two with Subway and for some reason after almost 30 years, I felt the need to get it off my chest. To me it is fitting that Jared was the face of their franchise for the last 15+ years. I hope it sinks their ship.

Most importantly, I hope the victims of Mr. Fogle get the help and counseling they need and a healthy dose of compensation from this debauched, sleazy, millionaire child molester. Here is to hoping he is a broke ass bitch when he is released from prison.

Here is a link detailing his crimes and some of the court papers from his plea agreement:

In college (this was reported a few years ago) apparently Jared only ate subway because it was in his dorm (too lazy to walk anywhere to get other food). Also apparently he made money in college by renting out porn (had a vast porn collection) for a $1 a day to other students and people in town.

Now again, there is nothing inherently wrong with watching LEGAL porn, and 99.99999% of people who watch Porn aren't child molesters etc, but it just goes to show that this guy probably showed warning signs from the very beginning, there were many reports of people complaining to the law and Subway about creepy comments he made about underage girls as well. Subway absolutely had some "idea" that he was a creep, now I doubt they could imagine he was a monster like this, but they should be held somewhat liable as well to make a very hefty payment to the victims.

I'm glad this clown was caught, and I'm sure he's going to see his share of 6 inches and footlongs in prison. Child molesters are the lowest of the low even in prisons, so I'm sure he's going to have a lovely time.

As far as sandwich shops go, the bad options outweigh the good. I've never experienced Clark's Subs Bark, but it's a damn shame they were shut down. Personally I never seek out Subway unless it's the only option on a road trip. My sub shops, ranked:

- Jersey Mike's - something about them slicing the meat in front of you that makes me think it's at least fresh(er) ingredients

- Thundercloud Subs - a staple here in Austin. A comfort knowing the person making your sandwich is higher than a kite, and gladly hooks you up with additional ingredients.

- Potbelly - big fan of their hot peppers

- Which Wich - custom sandwiches, a little too expensive for what you get.

- Quizno's - I remember them tasting better years ago - quality has dropped significantly now

- Subway - If it's the only option available, okay.

- Jimmy John's - maybe I had it too much at 3 AM during my college days, but now if the option is to not eat, or Jimmy John's, I would choose the former.

Erberts and Gerberts.... completely forgot about them. I haven't had their subs in 5 years but I thoroughly enjoyed them! Do they still have the bread guts to eat? That was my favorite part, and dipping that into some soup mmmm good

I loved that about the Dinkytown and Washington Ave area of the East Bank - very good local food such that the chains really weren't all that in demand for me. I never left practice at the football complex and thought, "Gee, I would enjoy some McDonalds"...not when there was Erberts and Gerberts across the street from the McD's. Also probably helped that the Dinkytown Subway at that time was dirty as all get out and known to be a drug drop spot to keep me out of that place.

One of the great sandwich creations is the Banh Mi Sandwich.

You can't beat a Barbeque Pork Banh Mi sandwich. I use to get them from Saigon Express on Nicollet, but it's been a few years.

I have a had a few on University in St. Paul in the Asian Restaurant/Food sector. The names of the places are escaping me, but they are quite the delight!

Speaking of Asian food, don't forget to visit Shuang Cheng if you find yourself in Dinkytown.

I have been meaning to get down to that neck of the woods for a while. It just hasn't happened. What do you recommend at Shuang Cheng. I took a peak at the menu... it all looks tasty.

For a basic meal I like the Gai Ding. But in winter the Hot Pots are the thing to for. Good curry, good BBQ, good scallops. They are known for their seafood but I'm less adventurous with that.

Ideally go with a large group and share many things.

Thanks Craig. Not into seafood myself. I'll take your recommendations and maybe head down there in the next few weeks. It might be a nice event for taking my mother-in-law out for dinner for her B-Day with the family.

Are you thinking Mesa Pizza? I didn't go to the U of M, (go Mavericks) but my times partying there I recall going to that place.

You had me at 6 inches and footlongs... hilarious! I have eaten at the bottom 3 of your sandwich shop list. Your analysis was spot on.

What's the deal with Jimmy John's? At first they were really good, but after a year of eating them once in a while, they became putrid... but the quality seemed to remain the same... bizarre.

I suppose it boils down to having better options out there, and something could have been changed with quality. To me the bread is the most important ingredient of a good sub. JJ's is forgettable at best... Equivalent to Suzuki leading off. They really started to hold back on the meat.. I'd like to have more than 1 layer of turkey. But they have the green light to load you up on lettuce that's on the brink of spoiling!

Shuang Cheng is delish I agree, the hot pots are also A-1 at Pagoda as well. Both are worth a trip.

Jarred actually lives in the same town I do, just a few miles from me, so this is kind of close to home in a not so good way.  It sounded at first like it was his associate.  It's unfortunate that he was involved too.  I'm at a loss though how having sex with 14 minors and having child porn on his computer is only worth 5-10 years.

He cut a deal that hopefully will send dozens more to jail

Hey DieHard. Was Fogle a well known member of your community or was it more like "that clown lives here?" when this scandal broke a few month ago?

More details are coming out about this guy and damn, he is one sick degenerative SOB.

It's too bad they didn't cracked down on him sooner to prevent some of his past crimes, but at least they got him now. This guy's disgusting criminal behavior, in my opinion, would have escalated into more heinous crimes if that is even possible.

They should lock him up and throw away the key.

No, Mesa's in Dinkytown. This one was in stadium village. I had my first legal beer there as my boss let me be "on call" in the residence hall and have one beer to celebrate my 21st, so a friend bought me supper, including a beer.

You thinking Campus Pizza? Good place but unfortunately closed it's doors this year.

There's a Mesa in Stadium Village now as well, and a Punch Neo, now that's a good joint.

Campus could be it. Right on Washington down the block from Stub and Herbs if I remember right.

Been much too long since I got to enjoy a meal in the area.

I really can't comprehend this.  Knowingly paying for child prostitutes is a baffling level of depravity.  Talking to a female parent like he did in that CNN article is also difficult to believe.  And somehow he didn't think this was going to get him in trouble.  Baffling.

Yeah, that's the place, well, used to be anyway.

Wow, asking her which of her children she would like him to watch on hidden cameras? That would have been it right there, Louisville Slugger to the head.

Good for her to see it through, although I imagine she must have been pretty scared at times being with somebody so depraved.

No clue.  He grew up here.  His parents still live here too...  so well known I guess.  There were plenty of internet rumors floating around that he had sex addiction issues from many years ago, so it's not really I surprise I guess.

that said, it sounds like this sting was in progress for years.
