Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 We actually celebrated s'more day last night. First time we've had a fire in the back yard in years, invited over some neighbors. It was great. And yes, there were IPAs involved.....
JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Today is National raspberry tart day The raspberries have been superbly sweet this summer but I ate mine plain not in a tart.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Supposedly, tomorrow is "baseball fans day". After tonight's game, I guess that won't be too cruel tomorrow for the most part. Fist bumps, manly shoulder bump hugs, and tender embracing hugs to everyone... and a couple of kisses too if necessary.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Since Bark broke the water and introduced something besides food-related holidays, I'm going to go ahead and throw in something even less related if possible. It seems to me that for the most part, so-called national days are for appreciating things one day out of the year when you should really appreciate them every single day. We all know that we should root for the Twins every day, so I propose that we start a petition requesting that a new national day be added to the calendar: Last Sunday of October: National Root for the Twins Day
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 When searching the net.....it appears that the US is the only country that does this. Or, am I just not seeing the other countries?

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Damn! Just missed Root beer float day. Question: What is the best root beer? There's something about 1919 Rootbeer ice cold from a glass bottle that reminds me of childhood...
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Those appear to be mostly normal holidays that are good for food, or did I just not click enough links?See, I think this is a very deep-seated cultural difference. If I may relate a story, in the late 80's, I was working for Honeywell, and we were partners in a NATO contract. We had visitors from our European allies, and I remember strongly a time the Italian team was here. These were aeronautical and electrical engineers, and over the course of several days they of course shared meals with our (US) team. It turned out that the Italians were absolutely scandalized, although they tried hard not to show it. The American lunches would last 30 minutes, consist of sandwiches that came out of a box, and there was no wine on the table. This struck them as completely odd. So, the thing is, Americans tend to think a good eating experience requires a special event or holiday. Europeans pretty much just have lunch.

Or, am I just not seeing the other countries?I'm waiting for National Lutefisk Day ... and for you to give us a report on your celebrations of it.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I'm waiting for National Lutefisk Day ... and for you to give us a report on your celebrations of it.When I lived with my grandparents in the early to mid-nineties. My grandma would make Lutefisk once a year. If I remember correctly she usually made it in May. After the first time I experienced her cooking it, I asked her to give me a weeks warning before she was going to prepare this dish. I then arranged a place to stay for the weekend as she strictly cooked it on a Friday. I did this for about 5 years. That is a nasty ass smell and it sticks to you and it permeates a household for at least a week - the 1st two days are by far the worse. Anyways, I am not complaining or anything of that nature. It's a fond memory I have as she passed away at the far too young age of 79 - 3 years ago, although 79 is a pretty good run. Lutefisk aside, I sure do miss her and her cooking... she was a legend.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 This has absolutely nothing to do with the thread, but is amazingly beautiful and worth celebrating anyway. Photographer: Greg McCown.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 There is a baking contest here at work, unfortunately the stuff goes on sale while I am in a meeting I can't just leave.....really would like to surprise my wife with chocolate, but I am going out after work, and I tend to forget errands when that happens.....
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 And yes, truffles is what I want to find....
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 In America, Bounty is a paper towel.Exactly. I think he was adding additional items to the list of things better than an Almond Joy.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Exactly. I think he was adding additional items to the list of things better than an Almond Joy. Maybe so. I'm glad we're all on the same page with Almond Joy. During my trick or treating heyday in the 90's, once word got out that a neighbor was handing out Almond Joys, that house was avoided like the plague.
