21-Year-Old Pitchers

How about this grouping?

J.O. Berrios

Stephen Gonsalves

Chih-Wei Hu

Felix Jorge

Randy Rosario

Yorman Landa

Tyler Jay

That pipeline of young pitching talent is ridiculous (not to mention Kohl Stewart is 20 and Lewis Thorpe is 19).

It will be lots of fun in the next 2 years to watch this wave roll in.  The idea that these 9 guys could roll in while Gibson, Meyer, May, Burdi, Rodgers are all under 30 is absolutely nuts.

And, to think, we're all excited about the position players...

Tommy John will pick off one or two. Some will flame out in higher levels.

Having many is the only way you are likely to get one or tow to actually make an impact in MLB, law of averages and such.

Gimme more!

The problem with pitching prospects is its very likely that 5 out of the 7 will have major injuries to overcome during their career.

Rosario is coming off TJ surgery so hopefully he can be healthy and produce.

Landa had some major shoulder surgery last year

Stewart has been shut down at various points in his short career

The longer I follow the minors the more I realize that TINSTAAPP is the cloud that follows all pitchers.

I'm well aware of the law of averages with respect to pitching prospects, so what you both say is definitely true.

That being said, I challenge any of us to name a wave of talent in pitching all the same age that we've had in our minor league system that matches this one.

When you throw in Thorpe and Stewart, it's absurd.

I tend to agree that we'll probably only get 2 premiere starters out of the grouping, but the help we could get in the bullpen could be absolutely vital to top tier success.

Berrios is clearly the gem of this group already at AAA and dominant at each level. The others have more work to do being in A or lower. 2 years from now I'd love to see Berrios have significant (more than a cup of coffee) MLB experience, and the rest of them either in AA or AAA. I would be very happy if we had an entire rotation of 22-24 year olds in the minors, and weed out the veterans.

Rosario and Landa combined have 2 starts above rookie ball.  They are so speculative at this point, their inclusion here seems strange.

I admit, the Twins do have some interesting arms in the lower levels, much better than recent years, although I am not sure the quantity or quality is "ridiculous" or "absolutely nuts" relative to an average team, just a recently pitching-poor one.

Agree with this. It is a solid group, but nothing especially special. Get excited about arms when they are healthy and have success in AA.

Or to put it another way, one of these arms is not like the others.

Pitching game is all about numbers.  Like the Twins numbers at this time and agree that some of these young pitchers will be here in 2-3 years.   A couple or more have already had TJ surgery, so will see how they come back and which ones will dominate at AA and AAA in the next couple of years.
