MLBTR on the Availability of Catchers

I think Suzuki gets too much grief from fans (myself included), he has looked significantly better at the plate over the last week, so maybe that jump starts him a bit and the 4 days off allows him to rest up.

They still need a better back up option IMO, but Fryer has looked solid thus far (SSS for sure)

Suzuki would be fine backup, but primary option with Fryer or Hermann as your alternatives? Ick

If you can trade Melvin Upton with ANYONE, there's someone out there who'd add on Chris Johnson to a deal to get the guy they desire.

I would hope TR doesn't take on another player with an untradeable contract.. We already have enough of those with Nolasco $12M ($1M buyout in 2018) and E. Santana $13.5M ($1M buyout in 2019)

There was an interesting read on grantland that reviews the Padres flurry of trades last offseason; the team foolish enough to make that Melvin Upton trade... I wouldn't put a 1st time GM on the same level as TR.

No, Dave is 100% right. AJ is a fringe starting C. No way is a team going to take on Johnson unless Atlanta pays virtually his entire salary thru '17. And they won't do that.

Wonder if San Diego will trade us Benoit for Nolasco straight up? :)

I read a summary of all 30 teams at the break. The writer said that the Brewers were the team in the most desperate situation going forward, so maybe unloading a high-value asset like Lucroy in order to replenish their system.

Check out the two sentences on the Brewers.

The links don't line up, no link to this year.

I thought his analysis on the Suzuki catch last year was atrocious. Guerrier missed his spot by 6-8 inches, there is no way Suzuki could have minimized his movement all that much - just happened Guerrier missed more into the zone not away from it.

Some umps will still call the zone true but many will not reward a pitcher who misses by that much.

I would go 30% ump, 65% Guerrier, 5% Suzuki.

That would be ideal! From what I was reading on that Grantland article he's in deep water by taking on all of those high $ contracts. Makes me think we could get Benoit for a PTBNL & pick up the check the rest of the season.

Interesting read.  Doesn't have a lot of respect for what the Twins have done

Is he saying what I think he's saying:  i.e.  the Brewers are looking for a trade partner that has an excess of starting pitchers?  I'd give up E. Santana, Pelfrey, Meyer and 1 or 2 lower level OF's [ NOT ABW ] for Lecroy and Cotts.

Benoit will be owed less than 3 million at the deadline. His option won't vest. His buyout is 1.5 million. If their goal is to rid themselves of contracts, they won't be helped much by moving Benoit. They have much bigger commitments in terms of dollars and years on the roster. They should view Benoit as one of the few cheap rentals they can move in hopes of getting value back in terms of a prospect.

I actually think he's spot-on with his two sentences about the Twins. He doesn't discount them as a contender, just states they might become a very strange sort of contender. The kind that shouldn't be winning on paper but wins on the field none-the-less.

Perhaps that PTBNL could be performance-based. Give them a list of 5 players in the 15-30 range in our system. If Benoit plays well and has x number of appearances, they get the highest player on the list. If he's a bust, they get the lowest ranked player on the list.
