WHIP and quality starts, "sabermetric" measures. God bless them, at least they're trying, even if it is a decade too late.

Sabermetric lesson includes QS, OPS, and WHIP. Cutting edge Fox Sports North!

What was wrong with that? There are many casual viewers, who don't post on Twins message boards, who haven't been exposed to SABRmetrics yet.

It might have something to do with SABR people laughing at the Quality Start stat in all its uselessness.

Did they really refer to QS as a SABR stat?

I'm so glad I avoid listening to those two talk about baseball.

To his credit, Bert just asked what WAR was....

Quality starts and WHIP aren't exactly looked at as SABR categories. It's not that they are covering SABR

Actually, they were. They were interviewing the president of SABR, hence the discussion, and they had an extended discussion on QS & WHIP. Granted, die-hard statisticians have long since moved passed those stats, but for many casual fans it's new information.

QS and WHIP have been on the backs of baseball cards for two decades. Sabermetrics typically refers to more complex statistical metrics than QS, WHIP, and OPS. It's fine to educate your audience on statistics, it's obtuse to miscategorize such statistics.

WHIP is borderline. Quality Start isn't used by anyone in the SABR community.

Dude. Splitting hairs a bit. When compared to true SABR stats.. WHIP compared to ERA+ or isolated slugging, etc? come on.

It doesn't help that Everitt has a buffet to catch.

---Seems like he's got something going on. I've got work to do so I've got one eye on the game and the other on a spreadsheet, but it looked like he was yapping at Ramirez for a while after Ramirez was already walking away.

I'm sure it wasn't his idea to bring up those statistical categories. Come on. Again, you don't bring in a nuclear physicist to explain how force is derived from mass and acceleration...

I cannot believe even the most casual of fans hasn't at least heard of "quality start." Bert spent a few minutes on it LAST NIGHT, and it gets brought up on Twins broadcasts quite often.

You're not interpretting my comment correctly. It's not the fact that they were convering SABR stuff - its that QS ans WHIP were being discussed. I'm fine with them trying to introduce SABR stuff to the general public.

True, not really trying to argue, just mentioning that I've heard a fair amount of SABR people casually reference WHIP over the years. To me, it's a lot like OPS. Good for a quick and dirty analysis but lacking in fine details needed to understand a player.

Oh brother, enough with the pretentious elitism fellas. General public, good lord.

Right. But as we know OPS isn't really statistically sound either. WHIP actually has more solid basis for measuring what intends and doesn't simply mush two percentages together.

Many of us just came from a Twins message board where we referred to ourselves as elitists, so get used to it. Moreover, there's nothing wrong with trying to uplift the discourse.
