25 Million left for 3 starting Pitchers

After the trading Span the other day we now have 70 million or so in commitments for next year. That should leave around 25 million to sign 3 pitchers. Since the Twins have announed they are unlikely to trade for a pitcher at this point. They can really only look through FA at this point for next season. The Twins have talked to 20 plus pitchers this offseason to guage what it would take to sign them and their interest level in comming to Minnesota. Several more pitchers are now on the marke

Doumit, Molina and Pitch f/x

"I don’t say this about many decisions, but starting Doumit at catcher might be a fireable offense. In 60 games at catcher for Pittsburgh in 2011, his framing cost the Pirates 20 runs. In 59 games for Minnesota in 2012, his framing cost the Twins 21 runs. All told, his framing has subtracted 98 runs over the past five seasons, on top of the damage from the other things he does poorly behind the plate, which wipes out his offensive value."   Ben Lindbergh, Baseball Prospectus   Read the article a

Gleeman and the Geek Episode 70: Denard Span for Alex Meyer

Aaron and John record an emergency podcast to talk about the trade sending Denard Span to the Nationals for pitching prospect Alex Meyer, what it means for Chris Parmelee, how Span went from prospect bust to underrated big leaguer, why letter grades for prospects can lead to arguments, dropping Deolis Guerra from the 40-man roster, adding Jeff Clement for Triple-A depth, and why Hulkamania will never die. Here are:     the podcasts the rss feed if you want to subscribe and the podcast on

Meet Alex Meyer

Yesterday, the Twins traded a known commodity in center fielder Denard Span for the potential of right-hander Alex Meyer, a 6-foot-9, hard-throwing and former first round pick with talents that have impressed prospect pundits.   While the Nationals get immediately better, the Twins will have to wait to see if Meyer’s talent pans out.   Here’s what we know about Meyer: He can throw in the upper 90s (ooh!) coupled with a devastating breaking pitch (ahh!) and is really super tall (whoa!). Do those

Adieu Denard

Originally posted at k-bro's baseball blog   You've most likely heard by now that the Twins have traded center-fielder Denard Span to the Washington Nationals for RHP prospect Alex Meyer today.     Being a fan of a sports team has its downfalls. I wouldn't have much fun being a fan if I didn't get a little emotionally attached to some of the guys. The risk of that, of course, is that it's a bummer when they go away. I will certainly miss Denard.     All the things I've seen on Twitter and websit

Are We Seeing Bizarro Terry Ryan?

This article was originally posted at Knuckleballsblog.com.   It’s been difficult for me this offseason to, on the one hand, listen to and read Terry Ryan’s comments about what his plans are for addressing the Twins’ obvious needs, while bearing in mind the Twins’ historical approach to offseason roster building. In fact, it brings to mind the “Bizarro World” introduced by DC Comics back in my younger (much younger) days.     http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Bizarro1.j

Mauer Trade:

Trade Mauer to the Red Sox along with Plouffe and Escobar or Florimon for   1: Middlebrooks 3B 2: Swihart SH C 3: Barnes SP 4: Buchholz SP 5: Bogaerts SS 6: Saltalamachia C   All of these players would fill some need and the only players on their active roster are Buchholz, Middlebrooks, and Salty. If you could get this "hall", I think you would have to consider it.

A Full Forty - Dissecting the 40-Man Roster (Pitchers)

Originally posted at Knuckleballsblog.com Last week the Minnesota Twins added eight players to their 40-man roster, maxing out their roster with 40 players. The Twins will likely remove at least one player prior to the upcoming Rule 5 draft, but for now, the Twins do not have room for any additions. If Spring Training started tomorrow, here are the 40 players that would be competing for a coveted 25-man roster spot and a place on the 2013 Opening Day roster. We'll start with the Pitchers toda

Teddy Roosevelt and the Great Free Agent Safari

Unfortunately, last evening, while walking home from my place of employment in Kagoshima, Japan, I was ambushed by an angry gang of youthful Japanese men.   I am not sure if they targeted me because I was American or if my job as a greeter at Burger King dictated that my honor was at such a low standing that it called for a good old fashion butt kicking. I must say I was intrigued by this gang… mostly their fashion and fighting style.   Imagine a young Japanese man dressed as Arthur Fonzarelli w

Quick Notes - Nov. 27

Specifically, I've omitted (although there's a better than even chance that I've erred as well, but I'm not aware of what it is yet).   Last time, I totally forgot to mention that Alexi Casilla was claimed off waivers by the Orioles. I not only forgot this event happened, but I also forgot Alexi Casilla existed. Not to be mean or any
