  1. Still have my Circular U of M MIT slide rule. It's a good thing plastic doesn't rust.
  2. Alex Wood definitely brings value if healthy but seems to be taking the Rich Hill career path. Villar is interesting. Doesn't really have a middle infielder's body at 6-0, 233lb. but has a nice combo of switch hitting, power, speed and versatility. Sure would make a decent super utility guy. Don't know what kind of clubhouse guy he is. If Tyler Chatwood could find some consistency and control he could be a terror on the mound. That 1.51 whip ain't gonna cut it though. Foltynewicz could win the comeback player of the year for somebody, or his arm could fall off, anybody's guess. Nice list Tom.
  3. Twins released Romero and is rumored that he will sign with the Yokohama BayStars in Japan. Twins to get approx. $300k.
  4. It doesn't seem fair to a team if a player is long-term injured yet accrues the time required to be available to be drafted away by another team. But I guess it affects all teams equally as the Twins did have the opportunity to protect players from being exposed to the Rule 5 Draft. It must be kind of weird for the player too if he is still in rehab or recovery as he changes teams and team coaching/medical staffs.
  5. Doesn't lessen the wonderment of his acquisition vs the pitchers we lost.
  6. Josh Mitchell: Lefty, he'll be 26 and not pitched above A+. Minor League ERA of 5.65 and 1.53 WHIP. He must have magic stashed away in his arm they hope to tap into.
  7. Jhonleider Salinas: His career minor league stat line looks like a Nolan Ryan season. 19-10 WL, 3.10 ERA, 288-211-171-290 (IP-H-W-K) with 23 HBP.
  8. Thats right, the Florida Miracle have bee rebranded as the Mighty Mussels, including a new logo that, frankly, if someone asked me, "what is that?" I'd be at a loss for words.
  9. A remote MLB Winter Meeting . . . that sounds like fun. I guess we'll have to play some remote golf then. Sure will save on the bar tab though.
  10. Just the fact that we still have Smeltz and Raley helped us get Maeda makes this a good trade for the Twins. I'm not sure either Dozier or Forsythe have much value left. Of course if Raley provides quality MLB at bats for a few years, it could tip the balance.
  11. I blame China.
  12. Ha ha. His '94 Fleer baseball card has him from New Ulm, New Mexico. Oops.
  13. And over at Baseball Reference they have his pic ... wearing a Yankees cap . . . grrrrr.
  14. I'm not a big fan of pursuing a DH. If one materializes on your roster, than use him as "the" DH as Sano might become someday. I like rotating guys to DH. Breaks the routine, concentrate just on hitting, injury relief, whatever. I think it helps keep everybody's batting eye in tune. But it's hard to argue with a guy who can mash as a DH everyday. Is that guy still Nellie Cruz?
  15. Jon Morosi of MLB.com tweeted yesterday: Sources: #RedSox have some interest in the non-tendered Eddie Rosario, although he likely would need to handle Fenway's difficult RF. Alex Cora, as GM, selected Rosario for Team Puerto Rico at the 2017. In other words, the Red Sox would need to consider the defensive capability of a Benintendi-Verdugo-Rosario outfield. Hard to make up for the potential departures of elite defenders -- Betts and Bradley -- in back-to-back offseasons.
  16. "We engaged with his agent. Just couldn't come to that agreement. We'll stay engaged with his agent." I'll go with this statement as they play The-Price-is-Right. We just might see Mr. Wisler back in a Twins uniform. One thing that is really hard to gauge this off-season is the development of minor league players. Is it possible that certain players have actually furthered their game more from the Player Pool environment than a regular season? We might be surprised by the roster make-up come spring time.
  17. Tony Oliva is the kind of guy that if you've been hanging around with him and he's not there, you miss him. A great ballplayer. Slashing hitter that would take pitches off his shoes and drill them to all parts of the ballpark, especially in RBI situations. Impactful defense in RF with range and throwing arm. ROY in '64. Batting titles his first 2 years. Gold Glove in '66. Garnered MVP votes every season up to his big knee injury. Batted .278 with an 103 OPS on basically one leg after the injury. Tony-O. He's in my HOF.
  18. Ben Rortvedt blocks balls in the dirt like he's just playing catch, easy as pie. Very impressive.
  19. Also the Twins signed 2 pitchers to minor league contracts, LHP Danny Coulombe and RHP Derek Law. Coulombe (KOO-lohm) pitched in 2 games for the Twins in 2020 giving up no runs, and Law was part of the Rangers player pool but didn't see any MLB action. So we've added a couple of bullpen arms to the mix for the spring.
  20. Agreed, but the landscape looks a little different now with the uncertainties of Baseball's near future. Player financial security might speak a little louder these days and a guaranteed contract probably looks real nice right now.
  21. And every GM on the planet tries to accomplish this. The thing is, do you get 1 player in return? Two? Three? For every extra player we get in return means each is of lesser value individually. Is that what the Twins need? Or do you keep the impact potential of Buxton and make contingency plans if/when he is out of the lineup? If I'm the Twins GM, I sign Buxton because players like him don't come around often and I make the necessary plans for when he is unavailable.
  22. Earl Weaver Baseball was da bomb when it came out. The Old Time Baseball Engine for Tony LaRussa Baseball is still fun to muck around with.
  23. Transaction Trees like this are good baseball fun and you realize how significant a single transaction can be . . . eventually. It still kind of freaks me out that you can trade people. Vive le trade.
