  1. And over at Baseball Reference they have his pic ... wearing a Yankees cap . . . grrrrr.
  2. I'm not a big fan of pursuing a DH. If one materializes on your roster, than use him as "the" DH as Sano might become someday. I like rotating guys to DH. Breaks the routine, concentrate just on hitting, injury relief, whatever. I think it helps keep everybody's batting eye in tune. But it's hard to argue with a guy who can mash as a DH everyday. Is that guy still Nellie Cruz?
  3. Jon Morosi of MLB.com tweeted yesterday: Sources: #RedSox have some interest in the non-tendered Eddie Rosario, although he likely would need to handle Fenway's difficult RF. Alex Cora, as GM, selected Rosario for Team Puerto Rico at the 2017. In other words, the Red Sox would need to consider the defensive capability of a Benintendi-Verdugo-Rosario outfield. Hard to make up for the potential departures of elite defenders -- Betts and Bradley -- in back-to-back offseasons.
  4. "We engaged with his agent. Just couldn't come to that agreement. We'll stay engaged with his agent." I'll go with this statement as they play The-Price-is-Right. We just might see Mr. Wisler back in a Twins uniform. One thing that is really hard to gauge this off-season is the development of minor league players. Is it possible that certain players have actually furthered their game more from the Player Pool environment than a regular season? We might be surprised by the roster make-up come spring time.
  5. Tony Oliva is the kind of guy that if you've been hanging around with him and he's not there, you miss him. A great ballplayer. Slashing hitter that would take pitches off his shoes and drill them to all parts of the ballpark, especially in RBI situations. Impactful defense in RF with range and throwing arm. ROY in '64. Batting titles his first 2 years. Gold Glove in '66. Garnered MVP votes every season up to his big knee injury. Batted .278 with an 103 OPS on basically one leg after the injury. Tony-O. He's in my HOF.
  6. Ben Rortvedt blocks balls in the dirt like he's just playing catch, easy as pie. Very impressive.
  7. Also the Twins signed 2 pitchers to minor league contracts, LHP Danny Coulombe and RHP Derek Law. Coulombe (KOO-lohm) pitched in 2 games for the Twins in 2020 giving up no runs, and Law was part of the Rangers player pool but didn't see any MLB action. So we've added a couple of bullpen arms to the mix for the spring.
  8. Agreed, but the landscape looks a little different now with the uncertainties of Baseball's near future. Player financial security might speak a little louder these days and a guaranteed contract probably looks real nice right now.
  9. And every GM on the planet tries to accomplish this. The thing is, do you get 1 player in return? Two? Three? For every extra player we get in return means each is of lesser value individually. Is that what the Twins need? Or do you keep the impact potential of Buxton and make contingency plans if/when he is out of the lineup? If I'm the Twins GM, I sign Buxton because players like him don't come around often and I make the necessary plans for when he is unavailable.
  10. Earl Weaver Baseball was da bomb when it came out. The Old Time Baseball Engine for Tony LaRussa Baseball is still fun to muck around with.
  11. Transaction Trees like this are good baseball fun and you realize how significant a single transaction can be . . . eventually. It still kind of freaks me out that you can trade people. Vive le trade.
  12. The Reds drafted catcher Stuart Turner from the Twins in the Rule 5 in 2016 to the surprise of most Twins fans I think. Turner might be a comp for Ben Rortvedt. Stuart batted all of .134 and was back in the minor leagues. I think it was a reach by the Reds that didn't work out. I'm thinking there might be less room for Rule 5's on major league rosters this year, so a lot of guys are probably safe. But then again, each organization has certain players they covet and if they are available, they might scoop them up. The team that plays their evals and rosters right should have a nice advantage come next season.
  13. Gotta be one of the hardest parts of being GM, keeping the right balance of depth and development. Plus, there is/will be a lot of minor league talent floating around this winter. You have to protect the talent you feel can impact your ML roster. I like Baddoo, Rortvedt, Rijo, Jax, Ober and Tyler Wells. The Twins spent good money for Severino.
  14. He pitched much better than I expected. It was great to see Rocco gain confidence using him in higher leverage situations as the season progressed. He pitched as many innings this year as Romo and Rodgers (20.0). Nice year .... meat.
  15. I like Walker as a target for the rotation as he puts TJ surgery behind him and hits his peak years. Smyly is interesting. Had a 4-start string at the end of the season for SF and commanded the ball real good. Kela and Doolittle ... just no. Oli P is a LOOGY and not as valuable with the 3 min batters, so no.
  16. I somewhat agree but there is also evidence that pitchers of yesteryear didn't throw that much "slower". Also hitters today use much thinner handled bats and hardly ever choke up on their grip. Good stuff.
  17. What are they going to do, put an "X" on the field with a circle around it to say this is the area you can position yourself in? Willie Keeler said to "hit it where they aint". Defensive shifts will limit themselves as soon as hitters start taking advantage of them.
  18. <<So, what do the World Series teams have that the Twins are missing?>> Winning post season games.
  19. After his stint with the Vikings.
  20. The pool of available minor league free agents might be huge this fall leaving open the possibility of signing players the front office covets.
  21. Sometimes a hitter can know exactly what's coming, and still not be able to hit it.
  22. Because of revenue uncertainties for next year I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins payroll budget comes in about 125M. With that in mind, I like Eddie Rosario but I can't see signing him at either of those rates, especially when we have some really good hitters coming up. Rogers arb rates also seem too high unless Wes Johnson feels 2020 was an aberration and we can get the old Rogers back. Then again, it's only money, right? Ha! I think I would use available moneys for starting pitching.
  23. I think Maeda only left 1 game with the other team in the lead. 2 of the 3 team losses were by the bullpen. I think Cruz without the injury/slump toward the end of the season wins it, but Maeda pitched amazing all season. It's just weird to consider 11 starts a season total. I'm not a big fan of pitchers winning MVP awards, especially when you average only 90 pitches per start, but it is 2020 after all. Can't wait to see Buxton actually play a full season.
  24. I had Wisler, Thielbar, Duffy and Buxton, in that order. Wasn't sure how to measure Maeda as he has had stretches that look similar to his 2020 line. I like it when there is strong competition for most improved.
  25. Pretty impressive crop of rookie performances this year. It speaks well to the organization that these players are called up and look ready to compete and perform on the big stage right away. Looks like the voting is spot on. I would pick Jeffers over Dobnak if not for performance then by the size of the hole he had to fill. Jeffers did a really nice job; better than I expected. Congrats Ryan Jeffers.
