  1. "Rob Huff of MLB Trade Rumors predicts the Twins will have a $125MM payroll for 2019. That leaves them with $48MM remaining to spend this off season." WRONG!! The reality is that should Mr. Pohlad think from a perspective other than that of a Ultra Conservative BANKER, he would find that the Luxury Cap is $206MM. That means the $77MM already "Committed" can be increased by $129MM without running afoul of the League. The Pohlad Treasure Chest, which was accumulated off the backs of the citizens of the Twin Cities whenever they: rode a bus, went to their bank or drank a Pepsi could easily handle shelling out an additional $80MM Just think about the team that could be fielded with an extra $130MM ! Wouldn't more people attend games? Wouldn't more people purchase souvenirs? Wouldn't more concessions be sold? Wouldn't it build excitement in the Twin's market? Wouldn't both players and agents give the Twins more serious consideration? It WON'T HAPPEN! NO GUTS!!
  2. The Pohlads have boatloads of money that has been earned off the backs of the unsuspecting citizens of the Twin Cities, every time they: took a bus, went to a bank, drank a Pepsi or saw the Twins play. When Carl was alive, he could have opened the purse strings anytime to field a winner for Eloise. He didn't. Neither will his kid. The Twins could spend up to the Luxury Tax limit of $206MM without any MLB repercussions. They won't. The Pohlad family embraces the "Fred Flintstone" philosophy of business,"You're in the business army now, your only friend is a BUCK and the more BUCKs you've GOT, the more FRIENDS you've GOT." They prefer to have the business "pay" for itself, when in reality, the operating loss incurred by spending in excess of revenues, could be offset against earnings in other businesses they own so that the operating loss of the Twins would DECREASE the overall income tax bill on all their holdings. While not "free money", those tax savings would DECREASE the fiscal hit of overspending in proportion to their effective tax rate. The over spending on the Twins is subsidized by income tax savings.
  3. Had to pay up to get Johnson; Wes Johnson has a 6.13 MM contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.
  4. My earlier comment about "Bargain Bin Shopping" is a commentary on the use of that term versus the identification (and cost) of players falling into that criteria. I am neither advocating that the Twins nor any other MLB team field a team of 25 players out of the bargain bin. That said, to construct or complete a roster of a competitive team WITHOUT just throwing big dollars chasing high buck free agents takes a considerably higher level of ability. Greater front office skills in: talent identification, talent evaluation, talent recruitment, talent acquisition, talent development, trade negotiations, out of the box thinking and just plain GUTS, can beat a big wallet.
  5. I am betraying my years with this response, but "Bargain Bin Shopping" to me does not constitute 8 Million Dollar a year annual contracts. Mining the "Bargain Bin" means: LOW COST Major League Free Agents, Minor League Free Agents, Rule Five Draft Players, Independent League Players, Minor League Players buried behind established players in other organizations, Players from Japanese Baseball, Players from Korean Baseball, Players from all over the rest of the world, Players NOT in the Game in 2018 and anyone else who has slipped in between the cracks.
  6. Bonehead, short sighted signing by Phillies. Why in the heck should the Twins bail them out WITHOUT A SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNT?
  7. And playing outdoor baseball in Minnesota during April, you need players comfortable in: stocking caps, thermal underwear, snow boots, winter parkas or snowmobile suits and the pair of gloves are to keep frostbite from the fingers, in addition to the one glove to catch the ball. (Native, Winter Hating Minnesotan)
  8. What about 16 2 team divisions? Only division winners get to the playoffs, so playoff revenues increase with 16 teams in the playoffs.
  9. Twins could spend up to $206 MILLION on payroll without running afoul of Baseball's Luxury Tax. Pohlad family just doesn’t like to have a business enterprise that does not fund itself. Fact of the matter is that you have to spend money to make money. The novelty of the new stadium has worn off. The local hero has retired. Time to start putting a good product out onto the field. Kiss up to an agent and make him an offer he can't refuse for a couple of big buck clients. Trade for a couple of high profile players. The only reason everyone got down on Joe is because ownership continually preached the payroll limit. The Pohlad's NEVER opened up the war chest they have built up at the expense of the citizens of the Twin Cities and used the money to surround Mauer with the additional talent he deserved to forge a truly competitive team. Who could be added to the 2019 team if an additional $80 Million were made available to be spent? Machado? Corbin? Kuetchel? Familia? Kelly? The Pohlads DO know they can leverage the operating losses of one business to offset (for tax purposes) the profits of others. They just choose not to.
  10. Hey, butterspud !! Addison Reed throws RIGHT HANDED. NOT Left Handed as you indicate.
  11. Analytics, conditioning, practice, shifts, drills, and personal relationships can only go so far in maximizing the performance of players. The key element to increasing performance is between the ears of the players.
  12. Curious that his chronic medical condition would not affect him, given the rigorous travel schedule as well as the mental, emotional, and other physical demands of a Major League Manager.
  13. Derrick Holland had a great year for the San Francisco Giants.
  14. Addison Reed throws RIGHT HANDED.
  15. Reed can be dumped in partial exchange by taking on the contract of one of the 3 first basemen mentioned earlier
  16. Want Aggressive? What would it take to get Realmutto? What would it take to get Starlin Castro? What would it take to get (one of): Paul Goldschmidt, Wil Myers, Brandon Belt? Failing on Castro, What would it take to get Joe Panik? Which relievers are available out there at what cost?
  17. Gee, J D Martinez was sitting out there as a free agent and the Twins signed....Logan Morrison. How did that work out?
  18. Have him learn Shortstop or Catcher - his numbers would be acceptable there.
  19. Okay, keep Sano. Try to get Myers or Goldschmidt (if he signed an extension) or Belt without including a key piece (from the Twins Standpoint).
  20. That (Fort Myers), just goes to to show you what a great fit that is. And don't call me Shirley!
  21. Send Sano PLUS ? to SD for Myers Sign Escobar and use him at 2B Use Willians Astudillo at 3B
