I'd be happy to have Hoskins or Turner on this team. Woodruff won't pitch this year and Urias is more likely to be given a long suspension than than be of any use. I wouldn't say no to Montgomery, but he doesn't have a high ceiling, I'd rather trade for a younger more dynamic pitcher who could lead rotation for several more years. And I'd rather have a hitter for the middle of the order than a reliever.

This will miss the point by drilling down a bit too deep, but I'd rather see Julien and his superior on base skills against a lefty with a history of terrible control. In the minors, even while his other numbers were down against lefties, his walk rate wasn't. So I can understand about wanting to pinch hit for him against a lefty late in a game, but not always, and probably not usually. Even if he's not getting clutch hits, he should still be getting him on base better than most hitters.

I don't think you're recalling that era well. All of those guys were crushing it in AAA and most had years where they were more than capable MLB players. But that's hardly the point, aside from his unwillingness to even consider using math to form a roster, Terry Ryan's biggest sin was never using his prospects to trade for the pitching needed to win a World Series. Same boat now, different prospects. Go get a top of the rotation pitcher.

Cuddyer, Kubel and Restovich were all top 30 prospects. I won't disagree that the Twins didn't know how to build a championship team back then, but that's mostly because they traded the less valuable guys, like Kielty, Buchanon and and Lawton (who'd be the Polanco comp here) instead of trading the more revered prospects for pitching. We were begging for them to trade for the top arms like Halliday, Sabathia and Lee but they never did. Losing Cuddyer would have hurt, but if this team uses one of those guys to get Curt Schilling in 2004 instead of the Red Sox, maybe we'd have had a World Series trophy. Also, keeping them all not only meant wasting the equity, but it was pretty crappy to the players too. Of those three names listed above, one sticks out for being a bust, but that possibly had nothing to do with him as a player. In the very spotty opportunities he got with the Twins, Michael Restovich had a MLB OPS of .807. The Twins didn't set him free until he was 26 and out of options. He's now a middle-age man who certainly looks back and wonders what could have been had he been given an actual chance.

Cuddyer was moved to the outfield because Koskie and Casey Blake were blocking him and he wasn't good at 2nd, He played almost exclusively in the OF in 2003 at both the MLB level and AAA. Then Lew Ford took the job and ran with it in 2004 and the team traded for Shannon Stewart mid season so they pushed Cuddyer back to infield momentarily only BECAUSE the outfield depth was so strong. But Allen and Mohr were absolutely legit considerations. Both were killing it in the minors, Mohr had a .961 OPS before he was called up. They weren't hitting the top prospects lists, but they earned their call ups over the higher valued prospects, who were at the same levels in the minors. They were certainly the Yunior Severinos and Anthony Pratos of that group.

The Twins had a half decade logjam of corner outfielders back in the day. With Hunter and Jones locking down spots, vet Matt Lawton was blocking Brian Buchanan, Chad Allen, Michael Cuddyer, Dustan Mohr and Bobby Kielty. And THOSE guys were blocking Michael Ryan, Lew Ford and top prospects Michael Restovich and Jason Kubel. The Twins did well trading Lawton, Buchanan, and Kielty, but you could make an argument that they should have traded more, considering they never had an issue developing this type of player during that time period. If you have value that you can't put into your starting lineup or starting rotation, swap it for equal value that you can.

I don't see a reasonable way to sign Cousins and Hunter and extend Jefferson. And even if they did, they'd still be the worst team in the NFC Central. Or maybe second worst. Justin Fields still stinks no matter if Chicago believes in him or not.

I'm sure this is the opposite. The Wilfs hired Adofo-Mensah and THEY told HIM they wanted to try to avoid a rebuild. A new GM wouldn't call the shots and tell the owners what needs to be done, the new GM would need to follow the wishes of his new bosses. And I get it, they wanted to put fans in the seats, but Kwesi got the job because he agreed to putting off a rebuild; if it was their choice, most GMs would want to start over and build a team in their vision. Now that it's clear it won't work, hopefully the Wilfs will agree to put Spielman's Frankenstein to bed and start building the team the right way.
-
He told the fans that, I don't imagine ownership is nearly as inflexible as you make them out to be. They've held on to coaches and GMs long past their expiration dates. And honestly, a full rebuild is likely Adofo-Mensah's best shot at keeping his job. If they try the band-aid approach again next year and fail again why would they keep him around? They're clearly the worst team in the division and have one good defensive player who's now a free agent. The band-aid approach is likely to fail next year. However, committing to a rebuild would buy you much more time as a down period is expected.

It doesn't come down to that, because I seriously doubt there are any front offices who value WAR the same amount as you do. Kepler's WAR is going to have next to no impact on his next contract or QO. No team is going to value a 30+-year-old corner outfielder's defense anywhere near as high as WAR does. Teams don't pay for defense at the corner spots, WAR is not a good argument here. Kepler will get a new contract or QO based almost entirely on what he does with the bat this year, which I'm betting is more similar to what he was doing prior to the last three months last year.

Two years? So this franchise uses another 1st round pick that won't help this team compete? What would be the point of bringing Kirk back if this team is still just treading water? Solitary double digit win seasons every few years is not acceptable. They need to build the team to the point where they are consistently winning 10+ games a season. Isolated one-off decent seasons won't allow the team to have the playoff fortitude to get better and advance. They need to have teams that get there EVERY year so they can get better and build on what they did the prior year. Other franchises are able to do this, but not our Vikings because they continue to slap more duct tape on the bus and pray it holds together for one more season. There is no need for a 40M QB when you finally commit to rebuilding, which this team needs to do.

Howell, Levis and Ridder all rode the bench. Which also shows the rookie biding their time learning from the vet isn't the guarantee that anyone would like either.
-
This is why it's so important to get another top of the rotation starter should be ignoring another back of the rotation starter all together. We don't want those innings going to a hope-and-a-prayer starter, it would be a huge step back from last year.

I'll be the lone wolf in being interested in Ewers should he come out. He's the one guy that you'd for sure want to marinate on the bench under a veteran though. I'd also like Nix, but only if he falls, because he's the one guy who I think won't hide the chip on his shoulder. A QB who wants to prove the league how wrong they were doesn't always work out, but when it does, you often get a world beater.

Cody Bellinger semi-maybe plausible scenario
nicksaviking replied to weneedneshek's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I agree that a short term deal doesn't seem likely. Also, he started off a bit slow last year, so if he were to do another 'prove it' deal, I'd guess it won't be in Minnesota where April baseball isn't very fun. And regardless of payroll, I wouldn't want Bellinger on a long term big-budget deal. One good year after three poor years gives me next to no confidence that last year's production is what to expect. -
At Least Three Teams Interested in Michael A. Taylor
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
What does Buxton have to do with Taylor not being an offensive fit with the Twins? Taylor is the only guy besides Buxton who can play CF? Other guys are available both internally and externally. -
I'm fine moving Kepler, but the Rockies have absolutely nothing on their active roster that I want on the Twins roster save for Nolan Jones, who happens to be another left handed outfielder, so I'm guessing that wouldn't make sense for the Rockies. Perusing their prospect list, which isn't the area I'm looking at improving, their top 3 pitching prospects are all at A ball or lower and combined have 4 innings of professionally pitched baseball. Their next best prospect pitcher has a 5.41 career MiLB ERA. I don't expect to get much for Kepler all by himself, but anything they do get, I want to be a positive addition to the team. Side note, man, doing this five minute exercise made me feel even worse for Rockie fans. There doesn't appear to be any light at the end of the tunnel.

Enough with the hyperbole. Show this "bottom 10" quote or stop with the exaggeration.
