NEWS: Twins Agree to Sign Infielder Ty France
KirbyDome89 replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo: .163/.288/.374 with a 45% K rate and a -1.5 WPA from May 1st onward. Pagan: 1.052 OPS against in high leverage, .850 OPS against with runners on base, -1 WPA as the designated closer Simmons: terrible offensively all season, cratered entirely in the 2nd half of 2021 when he posted a .488 OPS Blocking is irrelevant, continuing to sink innings into bad players is poor enough strategy to make these signings disasters.- 279 replies

NEWS: Twins Agree to Sign Infielder Ty France

I think the "blocking," angle with these signings is being overplayed and/or misrepresented (not by you) The larger issue is that Bader or France won't be given a roster spot to sit on the bench. You're locking yourself into a high risk, low reward player(s) who have no options, zero upside and no future with the club in the hopes they bounce back and outperform what's already in house.- 279 replies

Ditto, I think the only time I was in favor was during those dark mid 2010s years when fringe roster decisions were just shuffling deck chairs. It's kinda pathetic that a few weeks facing AAAA pitching might be enough for France to lock down a roster spot.- 279 replies

Joey Gallo? Emilio Pagan? Andrelton Simmons? This team has clung to at least one severely underperforming vet each of the last 4 years. Rodriguez is a strawman.- 279 replies

Or there's a minor injury, or Miranda has a slow ST, ect. My guess is we'll be beaten over the head with Santana comps if France makes the team and starts slow. The leash will be longer than it should be. This team hates giving up "depth," early in the season.- 279 replies

The greater concern is the opportunity cost. The Twins may part ways with France, but how long is the leash?- 279 replies

I'll take bad players with options over a bad veteran without one. This club has made it painfully obvious they don't want to move on from struggling vets. One month of a young player struggling is better than 3+ months of a guy like Gallo being a black hole. People are terrified of Keirsey, Martin, ect (and FWIW I'm not exactly on the bandwagon for any of the 3 you mentioned) tanking, but it's not like Bader isn't dangerously close to the edge of cliff either. The platoon philosophy that will ensure Bader gets more run than any of us want isn't a product of Rocco. No chance. That's coming from the top down. Rocco clearly agrees, but he isn't on an island when it comes to decisions involving player usage.
-
Or he's a player in decline? His career OPS is basically 700. He hasn't been close to touching that the last 3 seasons and I don't expect this season to be much different. Ditto for his ability to hit LHP. It's up and down over that span, but in two of those seasons he hasn't hit LHP anywhere near well enough to justify the playing time he's likely to get in MN.
-
You said you want him getting starts vs LHP over Larnach and/or Wallner. He's undoubtedly going to be a mid game PH option because this team is Charlie Brown trying to kick a football when it comes to that game of cat & mouse. He's a late innings defensive replacement, and he's backing up one of the most fragile players in baseball. Unless you haven't actually watched this team for the last few years (which I doubt is the case) we can probably agree Bader isn't going to get a 4th OF type workload, right?
-
This team platoons to an extreme degree, people seem to be forgetting that. Bader isn't a late innings defensive replacement who'll spot start here and there. He's going to play, and if Buxton has a typical season, he's going to play a lot. The leash will be long; they let Margot set a record for futility last year ffs...

"Trading for Cease would certainly cost them one of Louie Varland, David Festa, Zebby Matthews, Andrew Morris, and Marco Raya, and quite possibly two of them, as part of a package. but whoever stuck around would be free either or convert to the bullpen or to continue refining their craft in St Paul. Consider that for a moment: Marco Raya, one of the Twins’ best prospects, would be their likely eighth option. Name one other team with that combination of high-end pitching on the big-league club, and four additional legit starting prospects at Triple A. I bet you can’t do it, and the Twins wouldn't even be especially likely to need all that depth." Who are the 4 legit starting prospects? Matthews certainly wasn't last year. Varland isn't a starter, and might not even be a usable reliever. Raya averaged less than 4 innings per "start," in the minors last season. Morris has a whopping 10 starts outside of A ball. Soooo Festa? Yeah, I think most teams can match that. For a team that's supposed to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to "depth," it took one injury to a SP in August to send things off the rails last season.
-
When those runs occur is equally as important. Uneven offensive performance has plagued this club for a while now.

This club, as currently constructed, is capped as far as payroll is concerned. They might even be over the "right sized amount," with half the roster receiving a raise. $7M won't buy you much, but if it means this team isn't looking to shed salary elsewhere I'd be more than happy to send Paddack on his way.

Will he last half the season throwing max effort even if it's in smaller bursts? Will he actually be dominant? Is it worth it for a cash strapped team to sink $7M+ into the hope Paddack reaches levels of health and performance he hasn't come close to touching in the last 5 years?

The rest of this division, maybe sans Cleveland, was supposed to be trying to catch up to the Twins. Slashing payroll and falling back during what's supposed to be a contention window is a big deal. The fact that we're talking about at best sitting even with 3 other teams who are doing essentially nothing shouldn't be dismissed.
-
Winning teams focus on having good players. The fact that the Astros could afford to endure such a pathetic hitter is a testament to how much star power the rest of the everyday lineup had, not some feather in Moldonado's cap. When the Twins have 4-5 regulars garnering MVP consideration and multiple SPs in CYA contention they can start ignoring the fact Vazquez has been a black hole even relative to his peers.

I'm too lazy to check, but was he as brutal previous seasons in the OF? The fact that he was dedicating the bulk of his prep to OF work and still looked that brutal seems to be more of an indictment given the number of OF innings already under his belt.

Can The Twins Ship The Sheriff to Sacramento?
KirbyDome89 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The comment was tongue-in-cheek. Yes, the Twins aren't Pittsburgh, and they will outspend KC and Cleveland within their own division, but if we're pointing to extremes, I'll say it again, that's not a strong defense. -

Not exactly a strong defense.... -
100%. This roster is riddled with question marks. Hell, Castro himself probably qualifies after his 2nd half performance. The hope is he's a safety blanket that raises the floor. IMO that's worth paying for.
