  1. I'll take bad players with options over a bad veteran without one. This club has made it painfully obvious they don't want to move on from struggling vets. One month of a young player struggling is better than 3+ months of a guy like Gallo being a black hole. People are terrified of Keirsey, Martin, ect (and FWIW I'm not exactly on the bandwagon for any of the 3 you mentioned) tanking, but it's not like Bader isn't dangerously close to the edge of cliff either. The platoon philosophy that will ensure Bader gets more run than any of us want isn't a product of Rocco. No chance. That's coming from the top down. Rocco clearly agrees, but he isn't on an island when it comes to decisions involving player usage.
  2. Or he's a player in decline? His career OPS is basically 700. He hasn't been close to touching that the last 3 seasons and I don't expect this season to be much different. Ditto for his ability to hit LHP. It's up and down over that span, but in two of those seasons he hasn't hit LHP anywhere near well enough to justify the playing time he's likely to get in MN.
  3. Martin, and all internal candidates, have options. Do you think the Twins are going to cut bait and eat $4M+ if Bader is sitting at an OPS somewhere between the mid 500s and low 600s in early June? I don't.
  4. We're arguing semantics now. As others have said, I'd rather this organization throw money and PAs at guys who have a shot at making an impact. Bader won't save your season, he likely doesn't even hold water, he's just a potentially slower leak without any upside or future.
  5. You said you want him getting starts vs LHP over Larnach and/or Wallner. He's undoubtedly going to be a mid game PH option because this team is Charlie Brown trying to kick a football when it comes to that game of cat & mouse. He's a late innings defensive replacement, and he's backing up one of the most fragile players in baseball. Unless you haven't actually watched this team for the last few years (which I doubt is the case) we can probably agree Bader isn't going to get a 4th OF type workload, right?
  6. Bader had a .612 OPS vs LHP last season. Maybe he improves this year, but banking on him doesn't seem to be any less of a gamble. I'm probably down on Wallner more than most around here, but I'd rather see whether he can hit LHP at a level close to his late minors stint than throw ABs at Bader.
  7. This team platoons to an extreme degree, people seem to be forgetting that. Bader isn't a late innings defensive replacement who'll spot start here and there. He's going to play, and if Buxton has a typical season, he's going to play a lot. The leash will be long; they let Margot set a record for futility last year ffs...
  8. "Trading for Cease would certainly cost them one of Louie Varland, David Festa, Zebby Matthews, Andrew Morris, and Marco Raya, and quite possibly two of them, as part of a package. but whoever stuck around would be free either or convert to the bullpen or to continue refining their craft in St Paul. Consider that for a moment: Marco Raya, one of the Twins’ best prospects, would be their likely eighth option. Name one other team with that combination of high-end pitching on the big-league club, and four additional legit starting prospects at Triple A. I bet you can’t do it, and the Twins wouldn't even be especially likely to need all that depth." Who are the 4 legit starting prospects? Matthews certainly wasn't last year. Varland isn't a starter, and might not even be a usable reliever. Raya averaged less than 4 innings per "start," in the minors last season. Morris has a whopping 10 starts outside of A ball. Soooo Festa? Yeah, I think most teams can match that. For a team that's supposed to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to "depth," it took one injury to a SP in August to send things off the rails last season.
  9. When those runs occur is equally as important. Uneven offensive performance has plagued this club for a while now.
  10. This club, as currently constructed, is capped as far as payroll is concerned. They might even be over the "right sized amount," with half the roster receiving a raise. $7M won't buy you much, but if it means this team isn't looking to shed salary elsewhere I'd be more than happy to send Paddack on his way.
  11. Will he last half the season throwing max effort even if it's in smaller bursts? Will he actually be dominant? Is it worth it for a cash strapped team to sink $7M+ into the hope Paddack reaches levels of health and performance he hasn't come close to touching in the last 5 years?
  12. The rest of this division, maybe sans Cleveland, was supposed to be trying to catch up to the Twins. Slashing payroll and falling back during what's supposed to be a contention window is a big deal. The fact that we're talking about at best sitting even with 3 other teams who are doing essentially nothing shouldn't be dismissed.
  13. Winning teams focus on having good players. The fact that the Astros could afford to endure such a pathetic hitter is a testament to how much star power the rest of the everyday lineup had, not some feather in Moldonado's cap. When the Twins have 4-5 regulars garnering MVP consideration and multiple SPs in CYA contention they can start ignoring the fact Vazquez has been a black hole even relative to his peers.
  14. I'm too lazy to check, but was he as brutal previous seasons in the OF? The fact that he was dedicating the bulk of his prep to OF work and still looked that brutal seems to be more of an indictment given the number of OF innings already under his belt.
  15. The comment was tongue-in-cheek. Yes, the Twins aren't Pittsburgh, and they will outspend KC and Cleveland within their own division, but if we're pointing to extremes, I'll say it again, that's not a strong defense.
  16. 100%. This roster is riddled with question marks. Hell, Castro himself probably qualifies after his 2nd half performance. The hope is he's a safety blanket that raises the floor. IMO that's worth paying for.
  17. Castro's defense is overrated on this site. I think because he moves all over people assume he plays those positions well. He's best suited for 3B (where he's average or maybe a small tick above) and that unfortunately is where he'll likely see the least amount of time. To me, Castro is definitely a utility IF, and that isn't a pejorative term. This club has question marks all over the place; I agree that tendering him is an easy yes.
  18. Opposing teams don't need an army of lefties. One RP in the 5th inning is enough to knock one or both of Wallner and Larnach out of the game given the way the Twins treat those matchups. If Kiersey backs up Buxton, that is a problem. Unless we're blaming Margot being allowed to reach historic levels of ineptitude on Levine, or convinced that Falvey, Rocco, et al are going to radically change their approach, there will certainly be some redundancy in the way Larnach and Wallner are deployed.
  19. Twins fans need to move past the idea that this club is snakebitten.
  20. What was "fluky," about last season? Young position players scuffled at times, guys with lengthy injury histories got hurt and missed time, back end bullpen fodder burned out, and the only major pitching injury the club has dealt with in the last 2 years didn't occur until mid August. In a vacuum none of the struggles should've/would've been surprising enough to be considered a fluke. All but 3-4 teams in the AL were "in position," to make the postseason in late August. I don't find much solace in a bar that low.
  21. The Angels were perpetual losers while rostering one of the best players in baseball history during his prime. The Twins record with Correa on the field last year is pretty meaningless. The guy posted nearly 4 WAR playing only half the year.
  22. Because Lewis and Correa missed massive amounts of time? Julien was getting regular time in the field while he was a viable offensive option, that doesn't mean his defense was adequate.
  23. What's the upside with any fringe 40 man player that will occupy that spot? That's the comp here. Kirilloff is essentially the 2025 version of Jay Jackson except he has an option remaining.
