  1. This was a nice look. I'm not sure it would have worked as well for Lasorda, Scioscia, or Gardenhire as it did for Connie Mack. http://media.web.britannica.com/eb-media/32/61932-004-5B646289.jpg
  2. There's that 1, then...
  3. When the lead sentence of the article is "Eddie Rosario is having one of the best rookie seasons in Minnesota Twins history" they are somewhat applicable. Off the top of my head I had him at #3 in the past two years (behind Sano and Santana). Going forward, the comparisons aren't very useful. Santana's numbers last year screamed "fluke" (but so do his numbers this year.) Rosario's numbers are in line with his past numbers, so given his age I'd say he's more likely to improve than to collapse.
  4. I think he was talking to Plouffe about the umpire, not the play by Hicks. I can't remember if it was the 0-2 or 1-2 pitch to Johnson, but it looked like strike three, Fox and FX both showed it inside the area where pitchers normally get the call, and Perkins acted like it was strike three before taking a long look in at the plate where Suzuki held the ball. He had to throw 3-4 extra pitches because Johnson fouled a couple off. In the Santana at-bat, ball three looked like it probably could have been a strike (although it wasn't as bad a miss as the pitch to Johnson), and one of the other balls looked like it could have been close. Other than the one pitch to Santana, I thought Perk looked pretty good and back to his old self. (That double by Lindor really should have been caught.) I've gone from being pretty worried to mildly concerned about him. I think he's going to be fine.
  5. Like only because there were no cannibals in this joke.
  6. If you tell me Bartolo Colon is an athlete, you might cross a line there. I'm pretty sure he went to the John Kruk "I ain't an athlete, I'm a ballplayer" school.
  7. Like we don't have enough 4th-OF types already edit - I see Brock and I were on the same page; he just got there a couple of days before I did.
  8. Not news, breaking or otherwise. But he can play a little. His batting average is only .295, though. He'll never be a star unless he consistently gets that over .300. Maybe if he bunts for a few hits and stops trying to hit HRs all the time... http://i2.wp.com/listverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Sarcasm-MEter-e1374191031934.jpg?resize=632%2C234
  9. I'm not sure why that would stop us. Ceiling = Willie Mays except fewer HRs and more triples.
  10. He pinch-something'd. "Hit" wasn't the word that came to mind.
  11. He can't mean that. It would eliminate half the posts on the site (and about 90% of mine.)
  12. I speculated a while ago that part of what may have contributed to his decline (especially in contact rates) is seeing about 25 pitches a game instead of the 150 or so that he saw when he was a catcher. Yes, it's a slightly different angle, but he's still tracking a ball from the pitcher's hand many fewer times a game now that he's playing 1B. No, I don't think he's moving back and I don't even know if he'd be willing to try it.
  13. I always thought there were 4 distinct groups - pitchers, catchers, infielders, and daisy-pickers (or outfielders, depending on the age group) I know, the game is over. I should move on with my life. Only 30 pages to go and I'll be caught up.
  14. I had to check - it's all your fault. I had to forward it to my dad because it's right up his alley. It won't make his jokes any better (and they can't possibly get any worse), but at least they will be different.
  15. A 37-page game thread. Is that a record? I don't think I'm going to get all the way caught up tonight.
  16. Yes, they are sisters. Venus is older. Serena is better. Both are among the all-time best. Serena is almost certainly in the top 4 (with Navratilova, Graf, and King.) She might be #1 on that list.
  17. At first I thought it was going to burn, but now it's cooking way too slow.
  18. He does need to bulk up a bit. Maybe he should bring a cheeseburger up there instead.
  19. BA over .200 - things are looking up! What's his ERA?
  20. I sure hope that part was sarcasm. Jason Marquis has long been filed in the "gone and intentionally forgotten" bin, right there with Sidney Ponson and ... I can't remember his name now. It worked! (Free agent signee, 3B, about 15 years ago, possibly Tony something, released pretty quickly.)
  21. On a positive note, that shot was an amazing sight to see, even if it was only the hardest-hit double in history (or one of them.) If that was at Target Field, would we be comparing it to the Thome flag pole HR?
  22. Good point on the K:BB, although his minor league record is better in that area. It's something he has to prove at the MLB level, not something he has to learn from scratch. Santana's performance screamed fluke. We didn't expect him to fall completely on his face (with the bat), but there was some recognition of the peril of moving him back to a position he wasn't very good at. Rosario is a different guy, he's not going to have to move positions, and his performance looks like natural progression. The only thing that gives me pause is the drug suspension he had a couple of years ago.
  23. I think we all expected some regression from Santana, but I think most of us believed he would hit enough to stick at shortstop and it would be his glove that determined whether or not he made it. (Kind of like Nunez - he would still be playing shortstop for the Yankees if he could actually play shortstop. He hit enough to stick there.) It was absolutely shocking how bad Santana was at the plate. That didn't look like regression - it looked like a different guy, different even from his minor league track record, which wasn't great but wasn't THAT bad. There was no sane reason to expect him to completely forget how to hit a baseball. So why would we expect the same thing to happen to Rosario? He's not going to be transitioning to a more demanding position (unless something happens to Dozier, but even then Polanco is probably next up.) He was a much better prospect and had a better minor league hitting record; his minor league numbers are better than what he has done this year. (Santana's were much worse than what he did last year.) Santana was an obvious regression candidate because what he did last year was so out of line with what he had done before. With Rosario, it seems likely this is the true level of his ability and he may be a candidate to improve because of his age.
  24. On this thread; http://twinsdaily.com/topic/19771-can-we-put-down-the-pitchforks/ Not to pick on Gernzy, because this was just the latest example of this type of question being asked, and it's certainly a valid question, but examples like the Escobar/Santana situation seem awfully common in this organization, common enough to give me pause before answering "probably not." I'm not a Ryan basher, I don't want him fired (unless I get the job), and I (for the most part) like the direction the organization is headed. But I do get frustrated by some of the decisions he has made that seem obviously wrong at the time to those of us with much less information available, when in hindsight, it turns out we were right. Maybe if we were in the chair we would have a tough time seeing the forest for the trees, too. Maybe we would see the tools Santana has and try to make it work. Or maybe we would spend all day on TD and get the real scoop and make all the right moves. (Dave still wouldn't like them.)
  25. They can at least watch the game while picking their noses. It's hard to do that while napping or picking daisies. Plus we might get to use the old "How'd he break his finger? He got hit in the nose" joke.
