  1. Whose agenda? What's the conspiracy here? Backup = one that serves as a substitute or support. utility player = one who can play several positions competently. This seems exactly right.
  2. He's not going back to 2B. He played that position for, what, 2 years in the lower minors. It wasn't just Dozier's rise that pushed him back to OF.
  3. I wanted to see him get back on track...not so sure now.
  4. You trade from depth. But having a 4th outfielder and a budding AA outfielder is not depth to me (yet).
  5. It seems to me that Austin or, maybe, Adrianza are the only ones affected by this -- roster-wise. The only way he's taking ABs from anyone is if he's outperforming them, which is a good problem to have. I thought Adrianza's defense dropped last year. If that's trending downward, this is a significant upgrade. A defensive specialist without the defense isn't very valuable.
  6. In the era of the 3-man bench that shouldn't be a concern.
  7. Is that assuming that a team doesn't make any roster moves after April 1? Considering injuries, trades, roster emergencies, parental leave, etc, I don't see the issue.
  8. I agree that adding quality would be nice. I don't care how many career innings that quality has thrown, though.
  9. This is exactly why I have no problem with chasing 30+ relievers: they usually sign 1-3 year deals. If they bomb, it's a short commitment and you eat the money. Unless it's a "proven closer" it's under $10million/year. Given the volatile performance of all RP, you don't want a 5 year deal with a 27 year-old very often.
  10. He's always a different writer during ST. I find him readable at this time of year. (Or maybe I'm just in withdrawal.)
  11. It's possible that they have tried and neither player wants to be here. It takes two sides. That said, I'd be happy to have either or both of them.
  12. On the flip side of that argument, it means he's under team control through his prime this way. (Under the current CBA.)
  13. 2019 Anibal Sanchez award winner?
  14. I'd take Madson.
  15. While I'd like another reliable arm in the pen, I'm not sure Holland qualifies as reliable anymore. Id rather have someone else. Though I also understand that there are ups and downs in TJ recovery. I feel like Nathan had that in his post Twins career.
  16. I'd wait to see another year of Buxton and Berrios. Rosario I think is a contender. Sano is the most likely to ask for a ridiculous paycheck later, so I'd at least gauge interest in buying out 1-3 years now. But there's really no need with any player to lock them up before they enter arb years.
  17. True, but the proposal to bat Buxton is based on his recent performance, not his potential to be better. I see him hitting 7th or 8th until he hits his way higher in the lineup. But that's Baldelli's call.
  18. I don't know Schoop well, but I question why so many lineup predictions have him in the 6 spot. His numbers last year suggest 8-9 hole to me, unless he turns it around anyway.
  19. The Sox finished behind the Twins in the standings too. Palka can hit the ball a long way, but he's a fringe MLB player. Players like that tend to get at bats on last place teams. (See the Twins box scores of the past few years.)
  20. I wouldn't part with a top 25 prospect for a starting C for 2 years and I wouldn't part with the team's top SP prospect since it's a position to develop within. I don't see a fit here, unless the Marlins change their demands at the break. And I doubt they'll drop their asking price for another full season.
  21. I think his bigger issues have been adjustment to MLB pitching and an inconsistent approach, but the weight gain is probably good too. He's at that age where these changes tend to take place.
  22. It's pretty rare to extend a player before their arbitration years begin.
  23. I was half serious. Mostly wondering if he officially announced his retirement yet.
  24. Is Belisle still available?
