  1. Since Falvey is obsessed with “value” and the Pohlads are obsessed with saving money, it would seem that trading Lopez is a no brainer. I’d be ok with that if it brings some right handed power back, especially a 1B and a catcher. A team still needs a leader for the pitching staff and Joe Ryan at ~$10m is high value in that role, so he’s likely to stay. Falvey has pre-filled in behind Larnach with the approximately 10 LH outfielders he’s brought in so I expect Larnach is gone, which is no big loss.
  2. The Pohlads will own the team as long as brother Bob runs the Pohlad companies and he can’t find anything else for son Joe to do. Joe has screwed up everything else he tried so Bob doesn’t want him near the other businesses that Joe’s brothers run. The Twins start off every year with almost $200M from MLB and have a compliant exec running the team so how much bottom line damage can he really do? (The debt was rung up mainly by Jim.) Joe found the other investors so he could save his job, blindsiding a group that was raising the funds to buy the club. Jim wanted to sell and Bill P doesn’t care. This is all about Bob finding employment for Joe, so long as there isn’t too much damage to the family fortune.
  3. The only thing left to debate is whether the front office is worse at evaluating talent or developing it. I can’t decide but it’s clear they’re awful at both. Of course no one in the offices at 1 Twins Way seems to care. Hope is gone
  4. A big question to me is how this team managed to run up such a huge debt, given the extraordinary amount of money they receive every year from MLB. Some things I’ve read suggest those payments are far more than the payroll. I understand that the local TV money is way down, as is attendance, and there is debt service to pay. But I have to conclude that the 12 or so Pohlads who own the team must be getting big dividend payouts. No wonder they didn’t want to give up their gravy train.
  5. Eric, it’s incumbent on you to share what you’re smoking or ingesting with all the other Twins fans. We should all get to hallucinate like you
  6. Well reasoned article. I would keep the pitching core and make everyone else but Buxton available
  7. Why not let Varland pitcher the 9th?? He only threw 9 pitches in the 8th and tomorrow is an off day. Trusting Topa in that situation was/is/and always will be a mistake.
  8. The article misses the main problem with the payroll in that it’s way too top heavy. Three players, two who are frequently injured, make up 50% of the entire payroll. And the next 2 more highly paid -Paddack and Vazquez-provide no positive value. So the Twins have a Kirk Cousins issue-poor allocation leading to a lack of investment in quality depth, meaning over reliance on prospects and suspects. Couple that with very little recent investment in the major league roster and you end up with a 15-35 record in the last 50 games.
  9. On a related topic, seems to me the 1B for the next several years should be Royce Lewis. We have plenty of people to play 2nd (Castro, Julien, Hellman, Martin and Keuchel is coming soon). Lee is a good 3B and Miranda is best used as an almost everyday DH who fills in at 1B and 3B. Lewis is a much better athlete than Miranda or Julien and, in time, could become a great 1B.
  10. Best idea in here in a long while. Keep Polo and use the assets returned from trading Kepler, Farmer and Vazquez to get a starter and a RH OFer
  11. I’d suggest next year’s outfield starts with Buxton, Martin, Wallner, Gordon and Castro (of/inf) after Kepler is traded for pitching. Then we’ll see.
  12. Baltimore, because of its Houston bred FO, is really good at fixing pitchers-Lopez, Tyler Wells, Cano and others. That’s great for them and something the Twins definitely can improve.
  13. Nice job reporting. Thanks. Any discussion on Gurriel or Voit down there?
  14. Tremendous breakdown of this FO and it’s process or lack of it. Maybe the best piece I’ve read on this FO. Thanks
  15. I suspect we’ll see a trade with the Yankees to get Kiner-Falafa. They don’t need him anymore
