    I typed that with the assumption the player declines the QO. If they accept it's all a moot point.

    As I think more about this, QOs could be used as a tool for mid market teams like the Twins. It gives them the winter to negotiate a long term deal since most teams are now unwilling to give up the draft pick. Sucks for the player involved, as there is risk of them sitting out until June... But I would hope it's used in good faith to negotiate something long term with them. To answer your last question, yes, I would give up a 1st round pick for Pineda, no doubt. Probably for Odorizzi too. Gibson is a no.

    Depends if more teams will try to be competitive or not. I suspect we'll see teams continue to develop their own pitching and fail before giving up draft picks.

    Odorizzi would be doing himself a disservice if he declined the QO. Last year's debacle should raise red flags to anyone about to receive a QO... I'm sure he doesn't want to sit around until June when the QO draft pick compensation ends.

    Both Bateman and Tyler Johnson will play on Sundays... Best WR corps since Eric Decker and whoever else played with him.

    I agree he should be able to get hitters out either way. Seems like the new pitching coach messed with his mechanics to cause this loss in control. I don't know how else to explain the increase from 3 BB/9 to 5 BB/9 in 2018 to 2019.

    I hope they stretch him out to start again. I hated that he was moved to the pen in the first place.

    Neat. I was commenting about Tom's video showing every one of Graterol's pitches from this one outing. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Yeah he's got a little too much Sam Deduno in his game for my liking... Meaning I don't think even he knows where the ball is going once it leaves his finger tips.

    I propose a new unwritten rule... If it's past August 15th, teams with a worse record have to forfeit against the teams with better records. Who says no?!

    Concur... He should only be re-signed if it's not possible to sign Big Mike or Odorizzi first.

    Only baseball has players policing other players for no reason... A football team may put in the backup QB if it's a blow out. Baseball does that already by tossing out the mop up pitcher for an inning in a blow out.

    That plate appearance counts just the same on his stat line than every other plate appearance. The goal is to make contact and improve on that. There isn't a separate category where we subtract plate appearances he wasn't supposed to try according to unwritten rules.

    Imagine if these unwritten rules exist in other sports... In football if you're up by 2 TDs, the defense has to bat the ball in the air like a hot potato instead of intercepting the ball... Or if you have a clear path to sack a QB, you have to take a knee. In basketball if you're up by 10 points with 2 minutes left, you can't shoot the ball. Just dribble until the 24 second shot clock is up.

    This may be the dumbest unwritten rule I've seen in a long time. Jake Cave, or any other player in baseball, shouldn't have to apologize for putting the ball in play. No matter the count, no matter the score. These are professional players fighting for playing time.

    He's still putting up good numbers... 2.8 fWAR, 2 bWAR. It's not like this move would be made in a vacuum without any corresponding moves. In this hypothetical where Harper is a Twin, they could trade Rosario, Kepler, Kirilloff, Larnach, etc. for pitching. They could also trade Harper a few years into the contract as well.

    Concur. The Pohlads will fill our Christmas stocking with socks, not the hot new toy...

    Gonna be interesting over the next couple of years if a recession is on the way... After reading her explanation I can understand now why one is coming. Too many uncertainties with the upcoming election, tariff/trade wars with China, etc. But with every recession comes good buy low opportunities!

    I agree that QOs shouldn't be offered to Odorizzi or Gibson. Given how the last couple of winters have gone, they would be crazy not to accept it. Unless they want to wait around until June like Keuchel and Kimbrel did... The free agent starting pitchers are a little more attractive than the last couple of years. Gerrit Cole will be the prize everyone wants... I doubt the Twins will even get a return phone call. However, there's MadBum, Zach Wheeler, Ryu, Porcello... Maybe a couple of surprises like Archer, Kluber, and Teheran.
