  1. Agree with the need for a patient approach. I preached all off-season and well into the the spring & summer about the need for just that with Hicks. Sometimes you've got to give talented hitters a thousand big league plate appearances before giving up on or cutting them loose. At the time Hicks had less than 600 such appearances and Vargas has less than 400. As far as where he fits, he's your DH, unless Arcia (who also fits the under a thousand appearances mark and thus is still deserving of another shot) overtakes him. No need to jettison Plouffe either. Put the kid at 3B, Vargas and / or Arcia at DH with Vargas rotating in at 1B on occassion. Give Plouffe 5 starts a week between the 2 corner IF & OF spots & DH. Too many good bats is not a problem for this team yet.
  2. Not exactly true. If you're referring to the Wild Card play in game then yes that statement is true. But if you're referring to an actual Game 163 to determine who advances to the Wild Card game, that game is actually considered a regular season game, counts in the regular season standings, as do the player statistics, and as such Santana would be eligible to participate. And while he may not be meeting expectations at this point, our ability to reach a Game 163 might just hinge on his pitching at a higher level from here on out and if that happens I'd not have any reservations about pitching him in that game and using up whatever he may have left in the tank since it would be his last start of the season and / or post-season.
  3. Just need another 5 week run like the one we went on 4 months ago. Look back 4 months and tell me which team you'd rather have: That team that went on that monster run or the current team. 4 months ago when we got hot we DID NOT have Sano, Buxton, Hicks (I know, we don't have him now either, but it sounds like he'll be back right at 15 days) or Rosario or Jepson or Duffy or Santana (still think he'll pitch some big games down the stretch). We still had Danny Santana playing short & Vargas trying to DH. This team SHOULD be better than the best squad we've put on the field all year and fully capable of playing good enough ball to make a serious run. Whether or not that will happen nobody knows but at least it could be fun.
  4. Have you actually watched our OF defense this year vs. last year?
  5. If you're gonna keep 13 pitchers on the roster, which most teams seem want to do these days, I have no problem with a Rule 5 guy being one of them. Seems to me we've burned thru about a half dozen (or more) Rule 6 guys already this year.
  6. Another non answer. As far as Hunter goes I'll bring up 2 points. 1. If his presence next year as a 4th or 5th OF precludes the presence of names like Shane Robinson, Jordan Shafer, Sam Fuld, Clete Thomas, Darin Mastroiani or Alex Pressley, bring him back. 2. If his presence in any way contributed to the growth & development of Aaron Hicks & Eddie Rosario this year I'd love to see him back next year for a full year of the same with Byron Buxton & possibly Max Kepler or even Oswaldo Arica or Adam Brett Walker.
  7. Couldn't answer the question, huh? Didn't think so.
  8. Assuming Buxton doesn't get called up in time to get enough plate appearances before September 1 to make 2015 his rookie year, I count 7 rookies. Not that I mind but I would not expect to contend with 7 rookies on the roster.
  9. What would YOU do or have done? Be specific. Name names. Tell us how you would have made the moves you criticize Ryan for not making. Would the teams on the other end have made the moves you propose? It's easy to say something should be done. Tougher to actually do it.
  10. It might be if you are counting on him to be a 1st or 2nd starter. If you're counting on him to be a 3rd or 4th or 5th starter he's about what you expect there. Roughly around a .500 pitcher with a ERA hovering around 4. Doesn't walk too many or strike out enough. Please tell me we're not counting on him to be a 1st or 2nd starter.
  11. REALLY???? Just now coming to this conclusion?? Never took the time to wonder why the Yankees scuttled him just before Jeter was about to exit stage left?
  12. Might be kind of early to say anyone or any situation is locked in for 2016. Nine different guys have started games this year with over a quarter of the season left to be played. Add in the fact that 3 of the guys you named have ERAs over 5.5 and the fact that we might want to try to deal for catching & shortstop help you get a far more fluid situtation than you are envisioning.
  13. If every MLB team jumped off a bridge...
  14. His career OPS is 4 points higher than our slugging all star. I see 2 options. 1. Close the book on 2015 and let him legitimately compete for a job next year. 2. Let him go somewhere else, develop and make us look stupid once again.
  15. Actually it is considering that Torii has spent a considerable part of the year batting 2nd behind a guy who seldom gets on without homering.
  16. That "warm body" has driven in 1 more run than our alleged all-star second baseman in 75 fewer plate appearances.
  17. Not taking anything away from the players themselves for their development OR giving Hunter ALL the credit. All I'm pointing out is that Hicks DIDN'T develop when Hunter wasn't here and that Hunter MAY have had an impact and MAY be able to have a similar impact with Buxton going forward. 30 MILLION other people??????? I didnt' realize that 1 out of every 10 people in this country were involved in Twins player development. Holy s&$@
  18. 4 months ago all of those same options were available and the prevailing opinion among the faithful on these types of threads was that our OF situation was as dire as any position on any team in the bigs. Now the guys you mention all look like viable options. Is it possible that the presence of Hunter has had something to do with the growth of Hicks and the emergence of Rosario? Not only possible but likely. If there is any chance that statement is true then I want him doing the same thing for Buxton next year that he did for the other two this year. Not at $10 million per but I'd certainly pay him half that. I mean why not-it ain't my money. Of course the other alternative is to continue to keep Shane Robinson around as a dual threat guy in case we need him in the bullpen again.
  19. POTENTIAL is like seeing tracks when deer hunting--You can't make soup out of them.
  20. I'd be more worried about this if he were 23 or 24 or 25 instead of 21. Things change fast. When we called Buxton up and not Sano, people started reading into that move thinking that there might be issues with Sano. Now, were less than two months later and Sano is in the big leagues, batting cleanup and looking like the real deal and people are stressing about Buxton.
  21. And if Dozier could hit for average HE'D be a hell of a player. Lacking that he's a nice player. But don't put him in the conversation with the Trouts, Bryce Harpers and Goldschmidts of the world. Not hard to understand at all.
  22. The last time we traded away OF depth because other guys were "on the cusp" it only took 2 and a half years to pan out. Exercise caution.
  23. His career OPS is two points lower than that of Oswaldo Arcia.
