  1. Honest answer. Obviously they had other guys they had more interest in protecting and less interest in losing. Honest statement. For every Johan Santana selected in the Rule 5 draft there are generally about 15-20 years of guys who never approach that level.
  2. Putting him in the OF is also a way of making a potentially once in a generation type of hitter overthink the defensive part of the game at the potential expense of his offensive game. Leave him at the spot he's comfortable at. If somebody needs to move let it be Plouffe. It would only increase his eventual trade value.
  3. EVERYBODY has questions at this point in the off-season. The key is to have potential answers by April. We're a lot closer to that than we have been most of the last half decade.
  4. (And for the record, the source also said Lawrie is "considered the better bet to be traded" which implies Valencia's trade return would be lower, another opinion that is difficult to dispute.) Hence the crux of my initial contention that the thought of Valencia having had some sort of "career" type year is/was a bit overblown.
  5. The caption on the cover of Time magazine says it all. Funny thing is he wasn't terribly dissimilar as a hitter from a certain current Twin who also moved to 1st base from a more physically demanding defensive position late in his career and never quite lived up to the fans' expectations of what a first baseman should be.
  6. If you believe MLB Trade Rumors EVERYBODY draws interest. Kind of how MLB Trade Rumors justifies their existance. If 60% of what they speculated on actually happened I could make a living betting on it. I'm still at my regular job.
  7. Worth noting that in the midst of the "career" year you tout Valencia for he was DFA'd and picked up by another team that seems to have made replacing him a cornerstone of their offseason plan.
  8. Great idea. Why didn't anybody else think of it. Impracticle to replace everybody. Need to bring back the guys you think can help, get rid of the ones you think can't help AND hope like hell you make the right calls. If it was easy we'd all be running a team.
  9. I'm not sure that a team that: A: Hasn't signed Park yet, B: Doesn't know if Park can hit big league pitching; C: Hit .247 with 156 home runs and D: just traded away 11 home runs and had its 2nd leading home run & RBI guy retire, Can really afford to trade away its leading RBI producer. Just sayin.
  10. Interesting that the two are grouped together. Especially after Vargas gets sent down on the heels of a 2 and a half week stretch of hitting .366 and Arcia goes down with a 19 game batting average that ultimately ends up higher than anyone with more than 12 plate appearances not named Eduardo Nunez. This on a team that seemingly doesn't care that Joe can't hit for power & Dozier can't hit for average. Can't make up their minds?
  11. Of course its a good idea. It's a GREAT idea. Until he comes back to MLB and it's not. Has happened before and will happen again. If it didn't what would all the fans who think he has no chance to amount to anything going to have to whine about 4-5 years down the road?
  12. The fact that "Escobar wrapped up the SS position" made this list shows how much work remains undone.
  13. Especially when the prospect in question might the the only guy in the system with ace stuff. And in that case, for good reason.
  14. The biggest advantage Murphy has over Pinto is that he hasn't spent 10 years in our organization without learning to play defense. An outfield of Rosario, Buxton & Hicks may have been far above average defensively but would have been just as far below average power wise.
  15. That was either A. A long time ago at a point when moving Hicks would have been foolhardy or B. Not going to happen without a hell of a lot more than Hicks in the pot AND Greinke never would have stayed here either.
  16. I'm as big a Hicks fans as you'll find and while it's great to know that he CAN play Gold Glove defense, hit 20 HR & steal 20 bases I'd temper those arguments a bit based on the fact that he's never actually DONE any of those things--Signed Eddie Bane, Bob Gorinski, Adam Johnson, Matt Moses, Johnny Ard.
  17. Since Lucroy's never hit more than 18 home runs or driven in more than 82 runs and averages 15 & 77 per 162 games I don't think 15 & 80 are unreasonable ceilings for a 30 year old catcher who may be on the downside of his peak. Of course, now, 2 days later, the whole discussion is moot anyway.
  18. So let me get this straight. You want to trade 33 home runs & 119 (a number which should only go up with Hicks playing more games next year) for a guy who IF he's not starting on the downhill side of his career (like his current team seems to think he is) would be extremely lucky to top out at 15 home runs & 80 RBI? Maybe we could throw in Buxton & Berrios too. Just to close the deal.
  19. Willing to give him a shot. Dozier's had multiple opportunities to hit for a full season.
  20. That might be true if Dozier could hit after recess.
  21. I would assume you are referring to Alcides Escobar.
  22. I'm sure I'm in the minority but YES, in a heartbeat. The other factor here is that everybody on this thread is overlooking the obvious in house 2B replacement-a guy who hit .267 at the big league level in 2015 with 46 extra base hits and played more games at 2B in his minor league career than any other position-EDDIE. He would be a better fit as a 2B than OF and would free up OF space for Kepler/AB Walker/Arcia or whatever random veteran TR brings in to fill the Torii role, OR Trevor Plouffe.
  23. There are few if any catchers 25 or younger or older who are PUBLICLY available in a trade. The point is to come away with the best possible option not the first one.
  24. Didn't say we HAD a 25 year old catcher. Saying I'd rather target a 25 year old catcher than a 30 year old catcher.
  25. Otherwise he's no better than the status quo.
