  1. Show me a MLB manager who consistently bats his best overall hitter in the # 2 spot and I'll show you a manager who will be unemployed in 2 years. Your best overall hitter should bat third. Your number 2 guy should be someone adept at advancing your leadoff guy to second or third base whether by bunting or hitting to right field increasing the chances of the runner advancing to third. A better case could be made for putting your best overall hitter in the leadoff spot giving him a couple dozen more at bats over the course of a season which theoretically could translate into 2 or 3 extra wins. Bobby Bragen tried this with the Pirates in the late 50's and Whitey Herzog toyed with it, batting George Brett & Hal McRae 1,2 in the late 70's.
  2. Me neither.
  3. I'd rather leave Santana where he's at and build for the future. If Santana's still here in 2 years it means he's come around and hit closer to what he did last year. If Escobar's still here in two years it means other guys have NOT come around.
  4. Easier to be successful having a guy like Arcia being a minus defender is he is swing a plus bat and the other guys in the outfield are doing so as well and the other outfielders are plus defenders as well.
  5. So he's Brian Dozier?
  6. I didn't say that YOU said he can't play 3B but that seems to be the prevailing opinion among Twins fans. I agree with you that I want Sano to play in the field but it makes no sense to me to have the guy who might be capable of producing insane offensive numbers being the guy you want to burden with a position switch. Do whatever you can to make him as comfortable offensively as he can be. The defense will either come or it won't. I also agree that Plouffe is very good defensively. I also think that as a veteran he'd also be very good at the other corner infield or either corner outfield spot. I would put him in the super utility role that was once envisioned for Michael Cuddyer-5 starts a week rotating between the 2 corner infield & outfield spots and DH. That also only increases his value both to us and in a possible trade at some point.
  7. A little butt hurt over a guy with a career .245 batting average arent' we?
  8. I want Sano in the field too but why not have that be at 3B where 90% of his minor league games have been rather than at 1B where he has played 1 game. Why not give him a year or two to get acclimated to big league pitching before messing with a position switch and see if he can actually play 3B defensively at the big league level rather than just assuming he can't because he's "too big" (see: Sandoval, Pablo; World Series Rings: 3) or because somebody else says he can't?
  9. Mauer, Rosario, Hunter, Dozier, Plouffe. All have batting averages lower then Arcia this year. And batting average isn't even his game. Trade him for Lucroy straight up? I'm intrigued although leaving him to languish in AAA probably turns the Brewers off on any such deal. Throw in a catcher, infielder & outfielder who all should, or at the very least, could be keys pieces down the road? NOT
  10. Been saying for months that when Sano comes up make him the 3B. Put Plouffe in a Super Utility role that was envisioned years ago for Cuddyer-5 starts a week between the 2 corner infield and outfield spot and DH. He's never been a bat only guy in the minors and if you want to get him acclimated to the bigs put him where HE is comfortable-whether anybody else is comfortable with him playing there or not.
  11. Even with a decent start he's still the 5th guy in the equation for me. Key indicator for me is his K/BB ratio. Everybody else is either far clear (or in Gibson's case just a tick below) 2/1 and Pelf is not even close to that.
  12. Those were essentially spring training outings for Santana. There are actually a lot of ways a guy can allow 17 base runners while striking out just 6 in spring training outings and then be successfull in the bigs. How about his 8 shutout innings of 4 hit ball with 5 strikeouts and no walks last night for a preview of what could happen?
  13. It's easy to look back at our record and the production we've gotten in CF in 2013-2014 and say that trading Revere & Span was a terrible idea. But if you look further back you'll remember that our record the previous 2 seasons WITH Span & Revere in the fold was no better than in the 2 years since we moved them. If we are looking back 3-5 years from now and have got no production from May & Meyer then yes dumb moves. We're still a long way from being able to judge either of these trades accurratly.
  14. I can give you this year. MAYBE next year. But to say we have to think of more than this year and next as transition years, I can't do. At some point it's gotta be time to put the big boy pants on and contend young core or not. Gotta step up.
  15. At least Santana was solid last year. More than we can say for Buxton thus far this year. The kid should be fine in the long run but at this point I don't believe the sky is falling.
  16. You are correct in your Arcia assessment that the Twins have always valued defense. But let's think back to Randy Bush. He played a total of 50 games in the field from 1982-1985 and never hit higher than .249. But he showed enough with a little power that, in 1986, and even to a greater extent after Tom Kelly took over, that they worked with him to become an adequate defensive player and a vital part of two World Series winners. Do we really want to trade Arcia and see his offensive potention be realized somewhere else? I think the Red Sox just called looking for an eventual replacement for Big Papi.
  17. Someone will either falter or get hurt. Very unlikely that the Twins do or will have too much starting pitching.
  18. Have you been watching the last 2 weeks and seeing our lineup struggle with his bat struggling, much less playing elsewhere? You can NEVER have too much hitting. Trading away your cleanup hitter will only leave more holes in the lineup. Put Sano at 3B and let Plouffe continue to get 5 starts a week rotating between the 2 corner infield & outfield & DH spots.
  19. If you count on Salt Shane as anything more than a role player on a contending team you won't be a contending team for long. If you count on him as anything more than a role player on a building team you WILL be building for a long time.
  20. And yet his batting average is the same as that of the cleanup hitter and higher than the starting DH, Catcher & Shortstop. I know he hasn't driven in a lot of runs but that can be a bit of a fickle stat-See Joe Mauer 2014 vs. 2015. It can also be tough to do when mostly hitting behind the afforementiond DH, C & SS.
  21. Problem is you don't have 3 better even with Buxton.
  22. Mike Trout was hitting .403 in AAA ball when he got the call. Buxton's hitting .274 in AA with over 150 fewer career plate appearances than Trout had when he came up. Maybe Buxton's the one who needs to show a tiny bit of aggressiveness and force the issue.
  23. I'm more concerned about how he performs over the next 6-10 years than I am about whether we rank him in our top 6-10.
  24. Could not agree more. He is at best a utility guy. Capable of filling in at a number of spots for a very short time. And if OF is one of those spots then something is horribly flawed with this team.
  25. Not going to lose any sleep over whether or not Jay can convert to being a starter. If not, his background says late inning guy and in today's game that's pretty much as important as starter.
