  1. I never said "down year", I said his numbers are down, which is an unequivocal fact. Maybe it's just a string of bad luck, a bunch of duck snorts and Texas leaguers that are upping his h/9. Or maybe, after 5 years in the majors, and who knows how many years in Cuba, of putting great strain on his arm, he's entering the decline phase. If that's the case, I don't want to give up prospects and pay 15 million dollars to watch him get worse
  2. If we're going to spend capital in the form of prospects, I'd much rather use it to get a front-line starter. Sure it will cost more, but the payoff will be much higher than a relief arm, especially when a combo of Tonkin/Achter/Oliveros, and maybe even Zack Jones could be 90% as effective as Chapman. Add in the fact that Chapman's numbers are down this year (k/9 is down, hits/9 is way up, as are bb/9), and I'm ok with what we have. Now, if you can pry him loose for just Arcia, or someone like Travis Harrison, I'm good with that.
  3. MiLB has a nice write-up of the game (link at the bottom of the post), including the two quotes below, from Gonsalves himself, that I thought were particularly interesting. "The Twins told us this year they wanted us to be strikeout pitchers," Gonsalves said. "That meant getting more aggressive with two-strike counts. Throwing the ball in the dirt, throwing high fastballs, using more changeups. I'm starting to get really aggressive with my strikeout pitches, and I've gotten lucky here and there too that guys are swinging and missing." "My coaches keep telling me to keep working on what the Twins wants," he said. "For me, that's mixing in the curveball a little more. The goal is to be striking out big league hitters instead of guys at just this level. So my first five starts, I was able to get away with just a fastball and changeup, and now I'm getting some results with the curve, too. It'll be interesting to see if that holds next week." http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20150601&content_id=127928308&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb
  4. No reason to call up Milone unless you're planning on Nolasco missing a start. Otherwise you're better off bringing up someone who can pitch multiple innings out of the bullpen.
  5. Niko was a busy guy yesterday apparently, making appearances for the Miracle and the Kernels.
  6. I like it when my DH creates runs, no matter how they do it. If I told you the Twins had a player hitting over .380 in limited at bats, but left off the name, we'd all scream bloody murder every time his name wasn't in the lineup. I say ride Nunez until he turns back into a pumpkin, then leave him on the bench.
  7. On last weeks Gleeman and the Geek, Gleeman noted that no other affiliated player has more than 7 triples, making Buxton's 11 that much more ridiculous. I don't think it's going to happen, but I certainly think it's possible that Buck could get 30 in a season.
  8. I completely agree with the lack of patience angle. It is unfathomable to me that a guy could throw 44 pitches through 2 innings, and somehow still complete 9. Part of me wonders if the Twins just have a great feel for the pitcher when the game starts, but are completely lost when he makes an adjustment, and can't readjust.
  9. I think it's pretty clear that Hildenberger should be on the move, as his numbers aren't even video game numbers, they're too good for that. I love seeing Zack Jones killing it too. The Twins bullpen might be...uneven shall we say, right now, but it looks like that could change in a hurry.
  10. And of course, a 9 to 3 ratio can be reduced to a 3 to 1 ratio, or the actual number of strikeouts and walks he had.
  11. What does a baseball fan consider to be a seven-course meal? A hot dog and a 6-pack of beers. Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.
  12. Glen Perkins with a bullet. Dozier and MAYBE Plouffe if there's an injury at their position, or they really get hot over the next month.
  13. I hate the idea of moving people up based on how old they are, and not how they're producing. If anything, the results gap between Gonsalves and Batts is even larger, given that Gonsalves is that much younger. Additionally, aggressively promoting kids who sign right out of high school (who have earned it) can send a message to other kids like Gonsalves, and get them to sign after being picked in the third or fourth round, instead of going to school for three years. I'm not saying that should be the determining factor, just that it should be taken into account.
  14. I'm not thrilled that we have 3+ more years of decline Mauer ahead of us, when the best thing that could happen to this team positionally is to have Vargas at first and Arcia at DH.
  15. Why is Batts being promoted over Gonsalves? What more does he have to do to move up?
  16. Since I would know that he couldn't win the game, just prevent a loss, not to mention that by using him that one time, I wouldn't be able to use him the rest of the game, yes, there is an argument to be made that you should "bench" your best player with the game on the line. It would be like if LeBron James told me he could play 1 more possession in a game, so in a tie game I played him when the other team had the ball, rather than when I did.
  17. Cory Provus would like a word with you. How dare you just take his WAE belt, and hand it to someone else.
  18. Cory Provus just congratulated Mike Pelfrey. I suppose not giving up a run is a good thing, but I'm not sure that loading the bases qualifies as a "nice job".
  19. I'm so tired of the cliche "player x doesn't hit enough for y position". When it comes to defensive positions, as long as a guy can field it, and not be an offensive black hole, I'm fine with it. After all, if offensive production is what matters for defensive production, we can greenlight Vargas for right field.
  20. If Rosario is playing, one out of Hunter, Vargas, Escobar, Hicks, Plouffe, Mauer, or Santana needs to sit, all of whom have very legitimate reasons for playing every day too.
  21. Everyone needs to relax on Bocaton. We're still only a month into the season, a season coming after he missed an entire year. There's going to be a hefty amount of rust, not just physically, but psychologically too. Given that he has an OBP over .300 despite a BA under .200, I'd say he has an approach and it's working. Now the hits just need to start falling.
  22. Oliveros is basically at 18 k/9. If he's not in a Twins uniform soon, I say we riot.
  23. To the eyes-on-the-ground Chatty correspondents, thanks for the great info! One question--what's going on with Stuart Turner? I had hoped he would build on last years success in the second half, and give us a good defensive catcher with some hitting ability.
  24. Oh thank goodness. Schafer not only starting, but batting sixth? Don't scare me like that.
