  1. Not really. Let's say Aaron Hicks is in AAA until June 1, giving him a decent sample size. Let's say he's hitting .300/.375/.450 at that point. Does that guarantee he'll hit in the bigs? What if that was his line after being at AAA until August 1? The time to find out if we have soemthing in Hicks is now. Let's say he's not in the Twins plans going forward, because of Buxton/Rosario/Arcia/ABW/Plouffe; is there any GM out there who will think more of him because he has a great line at AAA? The only way to build his value is to have him succeed at the Major League level, and the time to do that is growing shorter.
  2. Why can we never have everything all work at the same time?
  3. I have to think the Sox pitching coach is channeling Ron Burgundy right now. "Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand, fast"
  4. AL Central Division Teams as Game of Thrones Houses: The Detroit Tigers are the Lannisters. They have the most money, and they spend it, some might say recklessly. They have an insatiable hunger for glory. The Kansas City Royals are the Freys. They take great offense at even perceived slights, even more so at actual ones. For years, they have been downtrodden, but now they are out to establish themselves as a power. The Chicago White Sox are the Greyjoys. They repeatedly get slapped down by their rivals when they get too uppity, but continue to believe in their own superiority. The Cleveland Indians are Arryns. Located far to the east of the other houses, a once great power that now is not very involved in the goings-on of the realm. The Minnesota Twins are the Starks. They stick to the Old Ways, and refuse to change. That lack of adaptability causes trouble for them. Within House Stark, Ron Gardenhire is Eddard Stark (because he dies). Paul Molitor is currently Robb Stark, bringing energy and vigor (let's hope he can write a new ending). Joe Mauer is Bran Stark (because of the bilateral leg weakness). Alex Meyer is Rickon Stark (because he's wild). Mike Pelfrey is Arya Stark (because he's so angry). Tim Stauffer is Sansa Stark (because he's always getting hit). TR is Catelyn Stark (because he's in charge of all the kids, and his inability to see what's coming will be disastrous).
  5. It is laughable that Hicks remains in AAA while Jordan Schafer eats up AB's in the bigs. There are no words.
  6. I would have much rather had Colby Rasmus, Nori Aoki, or Jonny Gomes than Hunter, all of whom signed this past offseason for 1 year, and less money than Hunter. The Hunter signing was at best 50% about baseball, and 50% about the money he could make the team. The larger problem with the Twins is they're not committing to one path or the other. If you want to compete in 2015, you sign Shields instead of Santana. You sign a legitimate defensive center fielder. And you sign better bullpen options than take a chance on me Stauffer and Boyer. If you want to grow for the future, you don't sign Hunter because you need Ozzie in right and Hicks in center. You don't sign Stauffer and Boyer because you want to see what Tonkin and Oliveros can do for a full year. You don't sign Santana because you want both May and Meyer in the bigs. Instead, the Twins chose some sort of weird middle-of-the-road hybrid, which is on neither track, and therefore was completely asinine. This roster was constructed like a fantasy roster, as the FO clearly didn't bother to consider how a move would fit in with the rest of the team, or the types of moves their current team needed.
  7. Let's get some runs on this guy.
  8. I never thought I would say this, but thank goodness, Shane Robinson is coming in. Congratulations, Universe. You win.
  9. Was the rhyming intentional, some sort of attempt to increase your fame, perhaps impress some dame, and most importantly, can we expect more of the same?
  10. Well, the NBA and NHL playoffs are going on, the NFL draft starts tomorrow, the Kentucky Derby is Saturday along with Pacquiao-Mayweather, so they're probably not pretending to care/know anything about baseball right now. Wait until the end of June, and they'll all be back.
  11. If Terry Ryan was wondering why everyone makes such a big deal about range in the outfield, hopefully this game has been educational for him.
  12. Let's just slow down with the cutting Hunter talk; no one on this forum thinks cutting Hunter will actually happen--I think we're all resigned to the fact that unless he gets hurt, he's playing 150+ games this year. What I'm saying is that you're drastically overrating Hunter's ability--he's not good. He's so not good that Aaron Hicks has better career stats than Hunter in OBP, SLG, BB/k, and has the added benefit of being able to actually run, and therefore could let Arcia move back to right (which is the only position he should be allowed to play), while also being an asset on the basepaths. We could also bring up Danny Ortiz, who has never played in the bigs, so we have no idea if he's competent. Finally, I could care less what Joe Q. Fan thinks when he goes to the ballpark, and to an extent, neither should the Twins. Every organization should have as its goal to win a World Series, and every move they make should be weighed against whether it gets a team closer to that goal, or not. Signing and playing Hunter every day does not get us closer to a World Series. Not signing/playing him might not either, but at least we could find out if any of our outfield prospects have something. Therefore, if sitting Hunter so Hicks can get run, or Ortiz can get his shot is the right move to make (which it is), it should be done, even if the casual fan gets upset.
  13. My two cents That 9-1-2 section of the lineup is a disaster. No average, no OBP, no power. Given Pelfrey's time in the NL, maybe we should just let him bat tonight. As it stands right now, Shane Robinson has been our hottest hitter (excuse me while I resist the urge to gouge my eyes out). Why would he be sitting in favor of Jordan Schafer, who has not only been unequivocally our worst hitter, but also our worst defender (according to the very SSS UZR, Schafer has been worse in center than Ozzie has been in left. Yikes). Also, Vargas to AAA in exchange for Pinto? Your views intrigue me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
  14. I don't think this forum is being reactionary at all. We're looking at a team that was one of the worst defensive outfields in baseball last year, and decided to go and sign one of the worst defensive outfielders. It was a terrible decision then, and unsurprisingly, through 20 games, it's been terrible, as Hunter being in right has forced Arcia to left and Schafer to play center. From the moment it was conceived, the decision to bring Hunter back was clearly a business decison, an attempt to pump a few more tickets, merch, and concessions out of the casual fan, rather than an attempt to honestly build a better team.
  15. Ahh, now we see the problem. You think Hunter is the second best Twin right now. His current stats are: .215/.257/.323, OPS .580. 4 2B, 1 HR, 4 BB, 12 K, 1 SB, 61 wRC+. See below for several other Twins better than Hunter. Dozier--.205/.294/.329, OPS .623. 6 2B, 1 HR, 10 BB, 20 K, 1 SB, 73 wRC+ Plouffe--.239/.311/.373, OPS .684. 3 2B, 2 HR, 7 BB, 13 K, 0 SB, 94 wRC+ Suzuki--.212/.305/.327, OPS .632. 0 2B, 2 HR, 6 BB, 8 K, 0 SB, 78 wRC+ And even though its in much fewer PA's, the below players are so outperforming Hunter, they should be getting more playing time if, you know, we just HAVE to play guys who will not be on roster the next time the Twins make the playoffs. Robinson--.333/.389/.364, OPS .773. 1 2B, 0 HR, 3 BB, 7 K, 2 SB, 117 wRC+ Nunez--.421/.450/.632, OPS 1.082. 4 2B, 0 HR, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 SB, 203 wRC+ Herrmann--.250/.357/.417, OPS .774. 1 3B, 2 BB, 2 K, 0 SB, 118 wRC+
  16. Why would we cut Arcia? If you can't tell the difference between a 24 year old with upside, and a 39 year old with downside, I don't know what to tell you.
  17. You can debate whether cutting Hunter will help the Twins win games this year (I am of the mind that since cutting him would improve our outfield defense without taking away much offense, it very well could). However, cutting Hunter won't make us lose games this year, and if a younger gets to accelerate his development, it could definitely help us win games next year, when it might actually mean something.
  18. How about Danny Ortiz? Or why not give Aaron Hicks his final shot, since it's possible he'll be on the next division winning team, but Torii Hunter absolutely won't be. Or why not have Santana play outfield, and let Escobar play every day at short?
  19. MiLB had a nice write-up yesterday about Gonsalves where he talked about how training with and learning from Strasburg and Shields in the offseason really helped him. In the story, it also mentioned that his fastball is in the low 90's, with a decent change, and he has an iffy slider and curve. As for the bunting to break up a no-hitter being against the unwritten rules, that is the stupidest thing ever. The pitchers job is to get outs, and the hitters job is to avoid making outs, however he can. If you don't want to give up a bunt single, then play a bunt defense. Otherwise, get over it and move on.
  20. Bring him up right now, as long as he is playing every day (even if he's not performing). It gives him access to our best hitting coach, and will help us to determine if he can at least hold his own in the Bigs. I'm not big on the whole "make him prove it in AAA" rationale; He'll turn 26 in May, so he's no longer really a prospect. Even if he does succeed in AAA, that's not a guarantee he'll succeed in MLB, so let's just cut out the middle man, and get the only answer that really matters now. Plus we can jettison Schafer, so that's a good thing too.
  21. Please, please, please a starting pitcher with ace potential. With Meyer not exactly lighting the world on fire, and Kohl Stewart apparently allergic to strikeouts, we could use a guy that profiles as a potential top-of-the-rotation arm, as right now we have a collection of 2-3's
  22. The solution is simple, but impossible. Call up Doc Brown, tell him to fire up the Delorean, and stop TR, from consummating a deal with Hunter. Keep Arcia in right, call up Hicks and play him every day (so at the end of the year you know whether you should keep him or not), and move Santana to left. Esco plays every day at short, and voila, you've improved your defense at at least two spots, without giving up much in offense.
  23. Thanks Seth, I missed the write-up on him, so this was a nice quick hit! As a small-ish guy who relied on speed myself, I've always had something of a soft spot for that type of guy myself.
  24. Seth, can you tell me a bit more about Zach Granite? He has great stats to start the year--.373 BA, .500 OBP, and more walks than strikeouts! Is he thought of as a potential push candidate to A+ if he keeps this up for another 3-4 weeks?
