  1. I think this is already happening. In his last 10 games, Buxton is .333/.435/.487/.922. 10 of his 13 hits have been singles, suggesting he's taking what the pitchers are giving him. He also has 7 BB's to 5 k's, along with 7 SB's compared to only 1 CS. The MWL All-star game is June 18, so I think we're about 3 weeks away from Buxton heading South.
  2. I have been very impressed with Pressly so far, and he's only getting better in May with a .89 WHIP. Too many walks, but if he can fix that, the Twins might have found another rule 5 steal. Hicks is starting to show some life in May, as he's above the Mendoza line for the month, and has a decent .452 SLG. The issue continues to be strikeouts, especially now that he's not walking any more. The defense is good, but he'll need to continue to progress. That being said, there's reason to hope that the worst is behind him. Dozier is flatlining, and migght only have another year or two to get things figured out. With Beresford and Santana holding their own at AA, and Rosario and Polanco right behind them, I'd say Dozier has the equivalent of one more full season to prove he belongs with the Twins, otherwise someone else will get a chance at second.
  3. The easiest way to not make an error is to not get to the ball. As long as the errors aren't multi-base errors, I have no problem with him making "errors" on balls that would have been clean hits against any other SS.
  4. Obviously Gray or Appel would be great to pair with Meyer, but what Kris Bryant is doing is pretty ridiculous. .338/.496/.876, 12 2B, 3 3B, 30 HR, 57BB, 37K. That's insane. A Buxton-Rosario-Mauer-Sano-Bryant-Arcia-Walker-Hicks-Santana lineup has the potential to be absolutely lethal as early as 2015-2016.
  5. Of those guys, I think Butera can be put on waivers without the risk of him getting claimed. All the other guys might get claimed, so I would put Ramirez and then Wood on waivers if I had to. Those are two guys that don't figure in the Twins plans now or in the future.
  6. If you think he doesn't have HEAVY involvement, and ultimate say-so, you're crazy. Perhaps he's not finding these guys, but if he didn't want them in the system, odds are they wouldn't be.
  7. I think TR clearly understands the importance of strikeouts, as evidenced by his moves in the minors in the past year. Here is a list of pitchers TR has acquired in his current stint that are currently averaging close to, or greater than, a k/IP; Melotakis, Berrios, Muren, Baxendale, Jones, May, Meyer, Thompson, Perdomo, O'Connor, Deduno, Wood, Burton. And that's not counting guys who put up the same type of averages last year, but haven't started playing yet; Mata, Merck, Chargois, Powell, Ferreira, Bard. By my count, that's 19 guys in less than two years, and I have a suspicion that our draft strategy this year will be similar to last year's, i.e. power, strikeout arms. I think TR gets it.
  8. Since Atlanta is Delta's main hub, there is actually a direct flight from Allentown, PA (where the Wings played last night) to ATL. It left at 6:15 this morning, and will arrive at 8:19. Given that Seth broke this at 1 AM Eastern, I'm assuming Colabello would have plenty of time to make it to the airport for that flight.
  9. Is Dan Turpen going to be sent down to AA at some point? He seems to be pretty overmatched at AAA.
  10. The Astros doing something like this would be a dream, as it guarantees Appel, Gray, or Bryant.
  11. The other thing worth mentioning is that Colabello's jack was off Chris Archer, the Ray's #4 prospect, and #43 in all of baseball (according to MLB.com). That means Colabello has hit his 3 homers in the past two days off of the #3 and #4 (and #42 and #43) prospects for the Rays. Pretty impressive.
  12. It doesn't make sense to play for the present if you're not going to win in the present. That the Twins are at .500 in the middle of May, and have been largely watchable is a surprising, but welcome development. However, this team is not ready to compete in the postseason, and won't be until the Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Meyer, Gibson wave is established--think 2015 to 2016. Right now, the best use of the Pohlad's money would be to keep payroll down, and sock money away for Longoria or Span like extensions for our wave of top prospects that will all be starting their service time within the next year to year and a half. I agree that if the money is going to go right to the Pohlad's bank account, that's not cool. But, if they're going to save 30 million this year, and 40 million next year, then pull that money out in 2016 to lock up Sano or Buxton (hopefully they'll be in that situation), I'm all for it.
  13. I think Harrison is doing just fine, other than the errors at third. He's already got 13 2B and 5 HR. That being said, the offensive talent in Cedar Rapids is ridiculous--perhaps the best offense in baseball when adjusted for league.
  14. The sheer amount of talent in Cedar Rapids is positively mind-boggling, and Fort Myers isn't far behind.
  15. Given how Pressly has looked this year, along with his rule 5 status, I think he's in good shape to make the team. Escobar is also having a good spring offensively--what does he have to do to pass up Florimon? And finally, any chance that Herrmann can unseat Butera, or is Gardy & Co too high on Butera's defense (I'm assuming Herrmann is not as good defensively).
  16. I think Eddie will repeat what Oswaldo did last year--start at Fort Myers, and make it to New Britain halfway through the year. I want to see Rosario and Santana play together, because that could be our middle infield combo as soon as 2014/2015.
  17. I'm not sure that any organization with Meyer, May, Gibson, Berrios, Williams, Baxendale, Chargois, and Melotakis could be classified as "void" of arms. Do all of those guys have a lot to prove? Sure. But outside of maybe 5 guys who qualify as prospects, that's true of every arm in the minors for every organization. Bottom line, for the first time that I can remember, the Twins have at least one prospect at every position that can be realistically projected as an average or better MLB player.
  18. It's encouraging to see the rebound of the farm system, but I still think Rosario got short-changed, and should be on this list. I also think it's absolutely ridiculous that Castellanos is considered to be number 21, while Arcia is 93. Now that they're playing the same position, it astounds me that there would be that big of a gap, considering Arcia is less than a year older, and had more hits, doubles, triples, homers, and walks, with fewer strikeouts, in less at-bats than Castellanos. Just ridiculous. That being said, I fully believe that we'll continue to see 5-6 players on this list on a yearly basis for the next few years. Gibson, Hicks and Arcia might all be off the list next year, but I fully expect Rosario, Berrios, pick #4, and maybe Kepler and May to replace them, with Sano, Buxton, and Meyer as holdovers.
  19. I think a possible option is honestly contraction. Tampa Bay clearly doesn't have the support to maintain a franchise, and Kansas City isn't exactly crushing it either. Eliminate those two, move the Brewers back to the AL, and you have two 14 team leagues. Top 4 teams from each league make the playoffs, no divisions. You play 9 games against every other league opponent, 2 against each team in the other league, and then 3 each against 3 designated rivals (for the Twins it could be Sox, Tigers, Brewers. Yankees would be Red Sox, Mets, and maybe Phillies). That's 154 games a year, you strengthen the talent pool, and you have a (mostly) balanced schedule, so the East Coast teams can't whine about tougher schedules.
  20. I think Oswaldo will be better by the simple fact that he will largely replicate his 2012 numbers, except he will be doing it at AAA from day 1 of the season. I also think he is very underappreciated nationally, and even quite possibly locally as well. To wit, compare the following two players, both of whom spent approximately half a year in the AA Eastern League last year. Player 1, born 5/9/91, 262 AB, .328/.398/.557, 86 H, 20 2B, 5 3B, 10 HR, 28 BB, 62 K, 3 SB Player 2, born 3/4/92, 322 AB, .264/.296/.382, 85 H, 15 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 14 BB, 76 K, 5 SB Player 1 is Oswaldo (as you may have guessed), and is listed as the Twins #7 prospect, and not in the national Top 100, by MLB.com. Player 2 is ranked as the #10 prospect in the ENTIRE COUNTRY, and is the Tiger's Nick Castellanos. Obviously, 3rd base is a far more premium defensive position than RF, but given Oswaldo's dominant offensive superiority over Castellanos in the exact same league last year, I believe that either Arcia is criminally underrated, or Castellanos is grossly overrated. Either way, I expect to see Arcia get some run in 2013, and win the right field job outright to start 2014.
  21. Eddie just might be my favorite prospect in the entire system. I'm excited to see what he can do with a whole season (knock on wood for no injuries), and am really excited for a potential Roberts-Rosario-Sano-Vargas top 4 of the Miracle line-up. That's some serious OBP followed by big-time SLG.
  22. TFFA--it seems like the Cats have been in a bit of a tailspin lately, what are the chances they make the playoffs?
  23. That could change next year when Sano, Rosario, and Vargas are doing their thing in the Sunshine State.
