  1. Taking him out of the rotation is part of my reasoning. I'd much rather have Winder in the rotation than as a piggyback. Gray, Ryan, Winder, Archer/Bundy, Smeltzer would be my setup for now. Injuries tend to figure things out so Ober coming back is probably solved by one of those 6 not being available anyways.
  2. I hope not. I probably should've said a piggyback starter. I want a starter as a long guy after Archer. 2 arms covering the whole game basically. And Thornburg is not the guy I want for that.
  3. That'd certainly be an option for me if I were Rocco/Falvey/Levine/Wes(soon to be Maki). I'd prefer Bundy, but Winder would make sense to me.
  4. A serious comment: They need a longer reliever to pair with Archer. And I have no idea why they haven't done that yet. I'd make a sarcastic comment about Rocco and the bullpen, but I'm too sad for that today.
  5. I don't know if I'd say "most likely," but it certain makes a ton of sense and seems super doable at this point in their talent cycle. Cheap young players all over the roster should equal the ability to sign an expensive SS.
  6. I mean it's hard to argue he won't be able to spend more time with his daughter like he said. LSU played 62 games this season. 21 on the road. College teams play mostly Fri, Sat, Sun series, especially if there's real travel involved (not just a quick bus ride to play a local college). There's certainly travel with recruiting, and the job is a year round commitment, but he'll be home far more than he was with the Twins. Spring training alone is more days away from home than all the road games a college team plays.
  7. There are currently 18 pitchers in major league baseball that qualify for the ERA title and are averaging at or above 6 innings per start. Sandy Alcantara is the only one averaging over 6.5 and he's actually averaging 7. Quite impressive for todays game.
  8. Alvarez, Altuve, Tucker, Brantley is a better foursome. So is Trout, Ward, Ohtani, and Walsh. So is Judge, Stanton, Rizzo, and Torres.
  9. The fact that they were all "arse whippings" is not a good argument for it being on the manager. In fact it's the opposite. I don't think Rocco is a great manager. I don't think he's an awful one. He's just another manager, like basically every manager. But to suggest if he was Francona, Baker, La Russa, name your favorite manager ever they'd have turned an ass kicking into a W is crazy. That's far more than "an edge" like you suggest a manager can provide.
  10. Yeah, that White Sox team has no good players on it...Luis Robert is trash, so is Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu definitely never won an MVP award, Giolito is a joke of a pitcher, Cease is having a terrible year, Kopech should be DFA'd immediately, Lynn should just retire, Graveman was a waste of a signing, Joe Kelly never should've made the majors, Aaron Bummer is a real bummer as a reliever, Liam Hendricks wouldn't help any pen, Yasmani Grandal is an awful hitting catcher, Eloy Jimenez was injured early on so I guess you're right and the team has no talent. They're definitely playing exactly how everyone thought they would coming into the year. La Russa really has them overachieving. I stand corrected.
  11. Yeah, I don't see the draw in trading Kepler (who's under control for 2 more years at reasonable prices) plus 2 of our top prospects to bring back a negative asset, a catcher who hasn't shown he can hit major league pitching in his first 3 short stints, a rookie ball pitcher, and Wood (I like him and would take him, but he's not enough to outweigh the assets the Twins would be sending).
  12. I agree that everything gets amplified in the postseason as the games mean more, but I think you go way too far suggesting that the managers suddenly outweigh the FO/players. Tony La Russa is a Hall of Fame manager and went 1-3 in the postseason last year. Was he a bad manager then? Dusty Baker is a Hall of Fame manager and lost to Brian Snitker in the World Series last year. Was he a bad manager then? Was it Baldelli that made Polanco throw a routine double play ball darn near into right field against the Astros? Or was it the FO who gave Rocco a less than stellar defensive SS and Polanco who actually threw the ball that were at fault? Against the Yankees in 2019 was it Rocco who got Pineda suspended and multiple players hurt late in the year? Dave Roberts has a .571 win percent in the postseason, but only has 1 World Series ring with the most talented team basically every year for the last 7 years. Is he good because he wins 57.1% of the time or is he bad because he only has 1 ring?
  13. I think this team is pretty similar to the early 00's teams. Those teams had some legitimate stars as well. Mauer, Morneau, Hunter, Santana, Liriano, Nathan weren't exactly nobodies. I remember a number of awful base running plays in the postseason at Yankee stadium. I agree this team is really frustrating with their fundamentals and it's something they need to improve, but I don't know that they're drastically different than the teams that started the 18 game losing streak.
  14. But in the postseason it's the manager that wins games? That's a new take for me. So front office/players win regular season games, but postseason record is a manager stat. Interesting.
  15. This. The Sherman piece is about the up coming SS class, and he's just setting the table by saying Correa and Bogaerts are opting out (which I think basically everyone who follows baseball has been saying since the start of the season). The Sherman article is actually encouraging from a Twins perspective as it points out the performance of last year's big SS class (plus Lindor) has not lived up to the contracts they signed which may (highly unlikely) mean teams won't be willing to go so high on the class this year. He even points out that Story and Correa struggled to get paid last year (the lockout played a role there so take that with a grain of salt). This was in no way a "breaking news" type of story, and the original linked article was just a local guy trying to get clicks (good for him, that's his job).
  16. It sure doesn't feel like they're going to be stacking anyone, but I'd pair up Bundy and Archer. Bundy still scares me so I'd like to give him shorter outings and Archer hasn't built up enough stamina yet. I'd see if I could get 9 innings out of the 2 of them every time through the rotation and give my pen an extra day off. But my guess is they just send Winder back and wait for another injury to bring him back. Ober coming back creates an even bigger imbalance between the rotation and pen so I hope they have a plan to move some guys around eventually. But we all know injuries, or poor performance, will likely solve the rotation overcrowding and the pen will still need outside reinforcements.
  17. FYI, pitcher IL stints are 15 days now. Same with being sent down, they have to stay down for 15 days.
  18. Rocco said they weren't interested in going back to a 6-man rotation when Winder first came off the IL recently. Makes me wonder where they go from here. In my opinion he's ready. And the staff as a whole clearly has holes and needs all the legit arms they can get. Too many starters, not enough relievers is something I'd hope they can fix by moving some of those starters to the pen. Dodgers used to do it with Maeda, maybe Twins decide to follow that blueprint eventually this year.
  19. Polanco starting game 2. Makes me dislike Garlick starting game 1 even more.
  20. Alcala should be back very soon so they should have an idea of whether or not he's the guy he was at the end of last year. Definitely don't want Maeda as plan A, but do have hope that he can provide some more reinforcement late. They need to bring in outside guys for sure. I'd like 2, but if Alcala is back in 2 weeks and throwing lights out I'd be ok with just 1. Duran, Jax, and Alcala have the chance to form a very nice back end to the bullpen for years to come, but I definitely want more brought in for this season. I'd like 1 righty and 1 lefty ideally.
  21. You and I had a back and forth just a couple weeks ago about using Duran in innings other than the 9th. You were adamant that they shouldn't do it. You admitted that in this thread as well that you want Duran used only as a closer. You then complained that Rocco should have used Duran as something other than just a strict closer today. I think you have many good thoughts. I don't agree with them all, but it's just a matter of opinion on different baseball strategies. Like whether or not teams should have strict 7th, 8th, and 9th inning guys. Reasonable takes on both of our sides there. But the "use Duran as only a closer" followed by "bring Duran in in the 8th!" is going to get a call out every time I see it.
  22. I don't care if the argument is one I agree with or not, I care that they're hypocritical and unproductive. It being the internet doesn't mean people can't still step back and think things through before just typing away comments/complaints that directly contradict their previous comments/complaints. It's entirely possible to be on the internet and think things through enough to have a calm, reasoned response instead of just waiting for any chance to complain without even a cursory consideration of how their complaints even compare to their own previous complaints. Complaining just to complain shouldn't just be accept because "this is the internet."
