Game Thread x2: Twins @ Guardians, Noon:10 and 6:10 CT
chpettit19 replied to wsnydes's topic in Archived Game Threads
That really is my point here. I wouldn't have been pissed if he used Duran for 2 innings, but it's a 162 game season and it'd be worse if Rocco managed every game like it was a playoff game and paid no attention to upcoming games. That'd be bad managing. They need help in the pen. I hope Alcala can be part of that solution. I hope they bring in another guy or 2 via trade. And I hope Maeda is back in September to reinforce things more. It just gets old seeing these game threads turn into "Rocco screwed up again" fests everyday no matter whether they're winning or not because he has to put in so many questionable relievers. -

And if Rocco uses Duran for 2 innings this game and then loses tonight and tomorrow in close games he's not available for you're back on here complaining that he didn't have Duran to use. The Twins have 2 even semi-trustworthy relievers right now. People need to quit blaming it on Rocco's usage of the pen guys everyday. It's simply an awful argument. Jax and Duran can't pitch every close inning late. They simply can't. That means Rocco literally has to put other guys in there. It's getting real old hearing the same complaints while people ignore the lack of options. -

And if Jax wasn't used in the 7th somebody else would've been. The point is that you continue to complain about Rocco and his use of the bullpen while refusing to admit that it isn't his fault he has 2 guys who should be trusted to pitch in late games. There's no great pitching strategy to overcome the talent of this bullpen. -

I don't like Pagan either, but the answer isn't "just throw Duran every late inning of every close game." You want Duran as the closer so you have to deal with lesser pitchers who shouldn't be pitching late game, high leverage innings. That's how it works. -

That I totally agree with. Jax may be a late inning guy, but they need more for sure. Hopefully Alcala is back soon and he can be one as well. But they need to make a trade. -

Well pick a complaint. Do you want Duran used as a closer like you complain about constantly while saying he should only be used in the 9th or do you want him used in the 8th? Can't have it both ways. Either you want Duran as the closer thrown in the 9th inning of games the Twins are leading by 3 or fewer or you want him used the way Rocco has used him this year. -

I'd think Gio could handle DHing 1 game and playing the other. Or Buck could DH both. Or you hit the lefty Contreras. Or you activate Polanco like there's rumors they'll do for the second game or tomorrow. There were options. I don't think it's the end of the world, and I actually understand the logic of hitting him between Kep and Alex, but there were certainly options for not starting him in this game. Have Gio have the night game off and let Miranda play against the lefty instead of the righty while putting your better defender at 3rd with Smeltzer and his 3rd percentile K rate on the mound. -

Kyle Garlick is not good against right handed pitching. It's more than reasonable to question why he'd be starting against a righty when there are better options and you know he's going to start the night game against the lefty. Career Major League stats for Kyle Garlick: Vs Lefties: 143 PAs, .277/.329/.623/.952 Vs Righties: 113 PAs, .192/.257/.298/.555 -

I'd think the reasoning for his placement in the lineup is to put a lefty masher between your 2 lefties that you aren't going to pinch hit for so if/when Cleveland brings in a lefty to face Kepler and Kirilloff they also have to pitch to the lefty masher. Why he's starting is more confusing to me. -
Alcala can't come back soon enough. Really need to see what he's looking like this year. If he's like he was to end last year it'd change the playoff outlook for this pen greatly. With extra rest days in the playoffs you can ride your pen horses a little harder and Duran, Alcala, Jax could be a really nice back 3. I'd still like to add 1 more piece at the deadline. Also hope Maeda is back in September in a pen role. But Duran, Alcala, Jax, and 1 trade acquisition would make me feel much better about the pen situation.

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
chpettit19 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess my response would be that he's at the major/D1 level so it comes into play. There are some drastic differences between D1 recruiting and D3 recruiting. D1 has way more limits on when they can talk to kids, etc. It plays a huge role in the timing of things like this since they need to be ready to hit the ground running on July 6th when recruiting really opens and having a pitching coach like Wes is a huge selling point to D1 schools that are looking to bring in kids who are going to be drafted coming out of high school. I don't have LSU's current recruiting list in front of me, but I assume they have some kids coming in who will be drafted in a month and having Wes on staff at that point will be a huge part of their pitch to get the kids to turn down their drafting team and go to LSU instead. Wes being a former Major League pitching coach is a huge selling point on the recruiting trail. Being able to tell elite HS prospects that they have the chance to be coached by a guy who knows what it takes to succeed in the bigs can't be valued enough. -
Jax is in the 87th percentile for K% this season. I think you may be selling him short. 76th percentile for velo isn't exactly elite, but 90th percentile in whiff% shows he's certainly missing bats. He's been way different as a reliever than as a starter.

Griffin actually does have some really good stuff if you believe in analytics like Stuff+. In fact he's ranked 23rd (128.2 Stuff+) in baseball by Stuff+, 1 spot above Duran (127.8 Stuff+). Edit: sorry, I was on the wrong tab, that was from earlier this month. The numbers as of 6/26 are Jax 127.6 and Duran 128.8. So Jax is still right in the same wheelhouse as Duran. Duran is 21st in baseball and Jax is 26th of anyone who's thrown a pitch this season. If you limit to guys with at least 10 appearances they're 13th and 18th in baseball.

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
chpettit19 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The bonuses and "other ways to pay college coaches" means he's still likely making 700k+. Kyle Boddy (founder of driveline, and with no bias in the situation), had a nice thread on twitter last night explaining that just going on a college coach's base salary is not an accurate picture of what they'll be making. Reusse, Gleeman, and multiple others with many sources saying the drastic raise is still accurate. -

Wes Johnson hired away by LSU/Pete Maki to be promoted
chpettit19 replied to lecroy24fan's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
With bonuses and "other ways to pay college coaches" he's getting much more than a 30K raise still. The original numbers of 700K+ are still accurate. He's getting a massive pay raise and gets to be home far more. It's a no brainer move for Wes, even if he didn't like leaving the Twins in this fashion. -
I can promise you nutrition is something the team invests in. They have team chefs that will prepare whatever the players want. They have highly trained nutritionists. They have highly trained physical therapists and trainers. They have highly trained doctors. The question is which players do what. The team can't force players to take any supplements or eat certain foods. All they can do is teach them and give them options. Kate Moran I believe is still the team nutritionist/dietitian. She at least used to rove and provide nutritional lessons to minor leaguers as well. Kurt Chenier is the executive chef. Michael Salazar is the head athletic trainer. Ian Kadish is the director of strength and conditioning. Masamichi Abe and Matt Biancuzzo are assistant trainers. The have multiple people as minor league medical coordinators, trainers, rehab specialists, and strength and conditioning coordinators. They're paying a lot of really, really smart people to figure out the best practices. Sometimes injuries happen. Sometimes a lot of them happen to the same team. There's not always someone to blame. Some guys just get hurt.

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
chpettit19 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, I think they would absolutely move on. Recruiting is the number 1 job of college coaches and you can't recruit pitchers if you don't have a pitching coach to do the recruiting. It's not ideal, it's necessary. That's just the recruiting side and doesn't even take into account fall ball practices that would take place before Wes was there. The only thing silly here is your stance that any college program would wait until recruiting is done and fall practices have completed to hire their pitching coach. It's not realistic and no program would do that. None. -
Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
chpettit19 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And why do you assume he knew in the offseason that he was interested in leaving? Isn't it possible, or even likely, that when LSU lost their pitching coach 9 days ago they started a search for a new one and Wes was approached out of the blue sometime in the last 9 days about the possibility of going there? -
Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
chpettit19 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There's no reason at all to assume "the job certainly would still be available in the MLB postseason." College coaching is a year round venture. College baseball and professional baseball seasons are on different timelines. No bigtime college program is sitting around until October hoping they'll be able to sign the pitching coach they want while they're trying to recruit. It sucks for the Twins, and there's no reason to think Wes didn't really struggle with the timing, but this is the nature of big time college baseball and professional baseball. Official visits for college baseball teams take place in September. Coaches start making visits to homes and schools in July (is that coming up soon?). July 6-31 is the next "official contact period" for D1 college coaches to recruit high school athletes. I haven't seen the end of '22 timeline yet, but, if they stay consistent, there will be a "quiet period," where contact with high school athletes is limited, starting in the middle of October. Waiting to hire the pitching coach until October while trying to recruit high school pitchers would be a terrible decision for a college AD at a major program like LSU. The assumption that the job would've been available in October is not based on anything real. -

Sounds like more money and fewer hours worked in college. Certainly makes sense to consider that move, but really shocking nonetheless. Will be interesting to see where the Twins go from here and what this does to pitching performances going forward.
