If you paid 80 bucks per seat to game 162 of the Rockies season when everyone knew they'd be bad and you were disappointed that you saw bad baseball in game 162 it's on you.

The deeper into the playoffs you get the better chance you have of competing with football on the weekends. If Fox is going to pay good money to air MLB playoff games instead of college football games on Saturday they'd very much prefer a divisional round than a wild card round. And games 162 that matter have a better chance of competing against football on Sunday than game 159 where there's still 3 games to go. I'd bet ESPN very much prefers baseball wild card on Tue-Thur with their full compliment of college football games on Saturday. The season was delayed last year so the playoffs were pushed back. Going off a schedule from the season they were coming out of a lockout maybe isn't the best comparison. People act like these corporations don't know what they're doing. Yes, it's all about the money, but the money comes from eyeballs, and they spend a little bit of time figuring out how to get the most eyeballs on their TVs/computers for these games.

I don't think many people would categorize me as an "average fan," but I love that the games are throughout the day so I don't have to flip back and forth and miss a bunch of one game or the other. I want to watch as much as possible. I appreciate that MLB gives me that chance. From MLB's perspective, they know most fans will find a way to watch their team if they really want to. The league is far too regionalized as is, and the postseason is the best time to market it to the national crowd. Yes, there are some people who won't be able to watch afternoon games. As some on these boards have mentioned, they'll record it and watch it commercial free later. Some fans have after work/school activities with their kids so they wouldn't be able to watch evening games. Some with young kids have bedtime routines that can take quite a while so they'd miss a large chunk of the night games. They can't hit everyone, but staggering the games gives them the chance to allow their fans to watch as many of the games as possible. I appreciate it as I'll turn the first game on and ride out the entire afternoon and evening with a game on. Much prefer that over only getting to really watch 1 or 2 of the games closely because they play all 4 at the same time or 2.

Them being the home team doesn't matter, the fact that their market is the farthest west does. "Get away with?" They're a multi-billion dollar organization. You don't think they've done a little research on how to get the most eyeballs on their product come playoff time? Maybe you can't find a way to watch certain games, but plenty of other people can. If they weren't able to fill the stadiums, or their ratings were way below where they want/need them, they wouldn't keep having games at those times. They've run the numbers, and they're doing what makes them the most money. Which means their advertisers, and the TV companies, also agree that the day games are the best idea. Plenty of people are still able to watch.

Depending on how they build their WC roster, I think this is a great strategy for them to try to deploy in a game. I wouldn't be surprised to see it at all. That's the problem with being so "copy/paste" with your strategies. I don't know how the Twins/Rocco would respond to seeing one of the lefties announced as a starter, but I really hope they've been discussing it, and are self-aware enough to know that's a really obvious strategy Toronto has to be at least considering since they know how the Twins can be rather dramatic with their pinch hitting moves. Will be fascinating to see. I expect to see 4 lefty arms on the Blue Jays roster tomorrow. Or at least 3. Either 4 lefties and 7 righties, or 3 lefties and 8 righties.

Heck of a game by Ober, and I wish they'd have lined him up to start game 3 (if needed) instead of Ryan. But I hope to see him in round 2! If Rocco would've used any of his playoff arms in the bottom of the 10th Falvey should've fired him before the first pitch of the inning. Why in the world would you take any extra risk at all in that position? That game meant literally nothing. It was a spring training game played in October. The idea of doing everything you can to win every single regular season game in baseball is an awful idea. Especially one you know is literally meaningless. Miami sat Arraez, Bell, Soler, and Chisholm yesterday. They threw Weathers, Brazoban, and Hoeing who have ERAs of 6.55, 4.14, and 5.48 yesterday. Weathers made 12 starts all year. At least 2 of those guys aren't going to make their WC roster, and it's quite possible none of them do. I'm glad the people running the Twins were smart enough to not be trying to win a road game in mile high in extra innings on October 1st when they have their first playoff game on October 3rd.

Arizona being the furthest west pretty well locked them into one of the later slots. Philly being the biggest national brand pretty much locked them into the last slot. Not surprised at all by these times. Not sure why AL vs NL would be a consideration for the league.

Candidates to be removed from the 40-man
chpettit19 replied to twinstalker's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Martin has all of his options left as he has never been on a 40-man roster. -
Well they have the exact same pop times so you're sacrificing offense in an offensively suppressed situation to gain no quicker throws. Bold strategy, but to each their own.

Wouldn't it being hard to score runs be a reason to start the guy who gives you a significantly better chance to score runs?

Game Thread: Twins @ Colorado 9/29 7:10 PM
chpettit19 replied to stringer bell's topic in Archived Game Threads
So your stance is that through 28 starts the Twins felt Ryan was good enough for the game 3 start that they set him up on the timeline to be able to start that game, and moved Maeda to the pen, but since start 29, in the best hitter's park on the planet didn't go well they're not only not going to start him in game 3, but they're not even going to roster him? Dang, that was one heck of an influential last start. -
FYI, Bassitt is a righty.

Because Buxton brings nothing else to the table if he can't play OF. If he can't play OF it's because he's still hurt. If he's still hurt he's not a better option than either of those other guys. Hurt Buxton isn't a good hitter while Luplow is useable against lefties. Hurt Buxton is a DH/PH only which significantly limits your choice of moves while both Gallo and Luplow can at least take the field, and thus give you far more flexibility with the moves you'd make. I wouldn't be excited about any of the 3 being on the roster, outside of good, healthy Buxton. But if he's not healthy, he has less usefulness than either of those other 2 guys, in my opinion.
-
He didn't try, he did play center in St Paul on 8/30 for the planned 7 innings. Reportedly had no issues in game. Couldn't complete the next game as the DH, though. That was almost exactly a month ago. I don't expect him to be able to play CF, but that'd be my requirement for him to make the roster. I don't know his current ability to do that. I'm not predicting anything, or making a statement on his current physical state. Just saying that, for me, he'd either be my starting CFer, or he wouldn't be on the roster. No in between.
-
Most likely, yes.
-
Is he good Buxton or bad Buxton? That's the only question, to me. Can he legitimately play CF for an entire game? If he can he's your starter. If he can't he doesn't make the roster. The playoffs are about ceiling, and who hits theirs most. Buxton has a higher ceiling than anyone else in the org, if he's healthy. He has a lower ceiling than anyone else on the 40-man roster if he's not healthy. So if he's healthy put him in CF and let him do his thing. If he's not let him sit in the dugout in a Twins hoodie and cheer on his boys. I don't see any in between.

Playoff schedule, and it Sucks for the Twins
chpettit19 replied to mrtwinsfan's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Since I can watch at work I don't mind it much, but back when I had a job that didn't allow for such things I was quite annoyed by it. I'd hope baseball has numbers that show there's enough people willing to sacrifice their afternoon to turn on the TV, but it'd be interesting to know what the numbers would look like if they did all 4 series as night games. I assume their hope is that baseball fans (not just team specific fans) would tune into all 4 games if they're spread out, but I'm not sure that's actually true. -
I don't see them blowing it up. I don't think they should, either. That team is loaded with talent. A bit like the opposite of the Vikings from last year to this year. Performance in 1 run games fluctuates, and you wouldn't expect them to go 6-25 (or whatever they're at) again next year. Going 0-fer in extra innings isn't likely to repeat itself. Having a +90 run differential and finishing below .500 is incredibly hard to do, and it's likely they're much better next year. Maybe you move on from Preller (he's never really won anything, just the king of the offseason) to try to get a culture change. Maybe you move a couple pieces if they aren't good fits. But the chances of collecting this much talent again anytime soon if you blow it up are awfully small. Make some tweaks, but that team is too talented to blow up.

Umpires can be doing their jobs as correctly as humanly possible and still be effected by the movement, or lack thereof, by a catcher's glove. It's awfully difficult to judge where a projectile coming at you at 90+ MPH while moving several inches both horizontally and vertically crosses a 17 inch wide, house shaped item in the dirt while also having movement in front of you that isn't just said projectile. There's a lot of info their eyes are trying to process all at once. Reading the "pitch as it crosses the plate" may sound simple, but it's not just some snapshot in time they can assess. The fact that they do as well as they do is mind blowing. Framing absolutely matters whether we'd like it to or not. They're still just humans behind the plate. And humans have limitations.

Oh, believe me, this pen has me questioning a lot of things, and I would not have predicted those September stats. I only looked it up cuz you made me curious. I'm just glad there's real talent in the staff as a whole (can move some of those quality starters to the pen in the postseason) for the first time in a long time come October.

I have the same round 1 pitching staff, and Funderburk would be added for round 2, if it were me making the decisions.

According to Fangraphs, the Twins have the 4th lowest BB/9 (2.76 BB/9) in baseball. Bullpen is only 13th (3.55), though. Since August 1, the whole staff is 6th (2.69), and the bullpen is 16th (3.65). Since September 1, full staff is 3rd (2.45), and bullpen is 8th (3.05). By BB%, full season, whole staff is 4th (7.4%), bullpen is 14th (9.4%). Since August 1, whole staff is 6th (7.1%), and bullpen is 17th (95%). Since September 1, whole staff is 3rd (6.6%), and bullpen is 7th (8.3%). By K-BB%, whole staff is 1st (18.1%), bullpen is 20th (15%). Since August 1, whole staff is 3rd (17.4%), and bullpen is 11th (14.9%). Since September 1, whole staff is 2nd (19.9%), and bullpen is 4th (18.8%). So August was pretty bad for the bullpen, but September they've actually been much better with the free passes.

Didn't think to look that up, just looked up this year's and saw there weren't times yet. I'd bet the Twins get that Tampa-Cleveland slot this year.
-
Night game would certainly be the best, but I'm guessing the TV folks are going to prefer the Twins are day games. Will be interesting to see if they give teams a day game after a night game or if they just do one series is night games and the other is day games. Have fun at the game! Hopefully they play well enough to deserve your travel time, especially if you're not back til 3! That would be one long day.

If it makes you feel better there's a solid chance at least one of those meals will actually be a lunch, and not a dinner. I'm betting the Twins get at least 1 day game in the Wild Card round.
