  1. Lots of question marks on the roster right now. And vaccination status must be playing a role in how the team reacts. There are apparently several (unnamed) unvaccinated players who won't go to Canada anyway. The team knows whom they will be missing, but we (I) don't. So, in Kepler's case, if he is not vaccinated he would miss three days there anyway and maybe they would go ahead and put him on the IL. If he is vaccinated but other outfielders are not, then they have to hope that he will be available in Canada since they will be short-handed already and maybe don't put him on the IL, playing shorthanded in Detroit in hopes of being less shorthanded in Toronto.
  2. What took you so long? That was the first thought that jumped into my mind!
  3. What really frustrates me is the number of times that one of our less-reliable relievers starts getting in trouble and there is no one warming up in the bullpen! I've been hearing this season that the Twins are tracking pitches thrown in the bullpen in addition to those thrown on the mound. Maybe they are going a little overboard in managing workload by avoiding warming guys up (until it is too late)?
  4. I am having the same thoughts about Steer that I remember having about Arraez five years ago. He's never been a top prospect with all the "tools," but his hitting has been elite at every level. Plus, he has power that Luis does not. I won't be surprised if he ends up getting called up after some infield injuries and making it impossible to send him back down.
  5. And as opponents use 5 pitchers per game. Platoon opportunities have become less of a "playing against RH starting pitcher" and more like "pinch-hitting against RH reliever."
  6. Has Sano been giving Buxton baseball lessons? His bat, and yesterday even his glove, are moving in that direction.
  7. Numbers can be useful, but this is just garbage. It fails to describe what happened in a way that allows the reader to see it. Was the double a line drive or a long fly? Was it into the gap or down the line? These are far more useful bits of info than whether it was 111mph or 91mph. Likewise the single and the homerun by someone named Curt Ball who must be new on the roster. I have an Einstein quote above my desk to restrain my quantitative propensities: "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."
  8. Couldn't agree more. They are back to playing baseball, and baseball >>>> homerun derby!
  9. Has anyone seen an analysis of how many of Sanchez's record-pace doubles would have been cheap homeruns in New York? It makes sense that when you move from a little-league park to a real major-league stadium some of the HR --> 2B.
  10. It was a semi-serious question. It seems like the strike zone has been migrating downward for decades.
  11. This is a short-term move. It's not like they have traded him for Matt Capps.
  12. Max played a lot of 1B in the minors. Given his general athleticism, I imagine he would be very good there. Those ballet genes will be useful at times handling the tricky footwork.
  13. What if that's not the nature of his injury? We are accustomed to players getting completely hurt and getting completely healed. It doesn't always happen that way. Are there are injuries that allow less-than-full activity without further degradation, but wouldn't be fully rehabilitated with full rest? I think so. I nursed my balky knees through 10 seasons as a soccer referee by working 5-6 games a week rather than 10-12.
  14. I was wondering how a pitcher got his uniform dirty! I figured he must have hit the ground in the celebration or something. But being a catcher make much more sense!
  15. I almost never watch against the Yankees or the Dodgers. Maybe I won't watch the Astros either after last night. I just don't like to watch the Twins lose.
  16. I thought I heard Dick say that he would play today. But I'll actually be surprised if that is true and (if he plays) even more surprised if he is still healthy by next week.
  17. Thinking about it, this is the piece that underlies my negative opinion of Sano. The good times are great, if infrequent. But the bad times are abysmal. Kind of a black hole in the middle of the lineup, sucking up outs for a week at a time.
  18. This A's team reminds me of Charlie Finley's A's teams from 1977 and 1978, after Jackson, Bando, Campaneris, Hunter, etc. had all left with the dawn of free agency. We used to go and watch the Twins play them in Oakland from time to time. They were brutal (but still managed to beat the Twins a few times when we went). Think about what would happen if the entire Twins team left all at once and the whole team was promoted from the minor leagues. That's what those teams were like.
  19. "Fluff" schedule is a double-edged sword. At full strength, the team should be taking advantage of this to build their record and, we hope, a lead in the division. If they fail to do that, then the "non-fluff" part of the schedule that inevitably follows will threaten to drop us down the standings.
