  1. I really hope he makes it to the Twins. We need more Puccini as walk-up music!
  2. It's self-defense, kind of like ducking when the bullet start flying or heading to the basement in a tornado warning. My coping mechanism is to avoid watching.
  3. What are the town-ball restrictions on professional vs. amateur status? Can one simply become amateur again after leaving organized ball? Or are professionals allowed to play in town leagues?
  4. My prediction: Entire division under .500. Perhaps difficult because the leaders play each other so often. At this point, I don't really care much who wins. It's kind of like a "race" between crippled horses to see who gets to enter (and finish last in) the Kentucky Derby.
  5. Why do we need to rank them? Just a list of these amazing pitches and pitchers is sufficient.
  6. Maybe a conversation with Mr. Carew is in order.
  7. Cave actually had one over 0.550 last week. Key hits from unexpected places!
  8. To me, he really looks disinterested and distracted. I wonder if something else is going on in his life that makes it hard to be excited about baseball.
  9. I have a naïve hypothesis about Pagan, so let me share it and then you all can shoot it down. Given his shaky control, he throws 4-5 pitches in most at-bats. The metrics other than actual contact ones are decent. Maybe this is because in each at-bat he throws 3-4 really good pitches, and they count in many of the non-contract metrics (velocity, spin rate, etc.) but all too often he gets behind in the count and mixes in a meatball that gets killed. Batters know that they can wait for the hittable pitch and then crush it, or maybe take a walk, Does this make sense to anyone except me? When I was teaching budding economists, I always stressed the need to look beyond any single summary statistic about the economy to try to interpret what was consistent with the multi-dimensional data available. (Great current example: GDP is stagnant but the labor market is very hot.) This seems like a similar case of needing to look at exactly what each metric is saying rather than just seeing a lot of blue or a lot of red on the chart.
  10. Since they know more than we do, I'm interpreting this as a signal that Buxton WILL be out for a long time.
  11. Kind of profiles more like a lefty Miguel Sano to me, though he's probably better in the outfield.
  12. This will be a tougher schedule than we have played in recent years. Maybe it's just the losing mentality of the last week, but I see lots of Ls when I look at it.
  13. Sounds like the Twins need the season to be one month shorter. They are staggering toward the home stretch, not toward the finish line.
  14. Interesting. You are clearly ranking based on the expected ability to be the star, but I expect if the Twins excel in September that looking back it will be someone from the lower part of your list or even not on the list who will be regarded as crucial. Getting key production from unexpected places is often as (or more) important than the big guns doing what we expect them to do. Eddie in the postseason last year is a good example. I'd say that if Bundy and Archer (and/or whoever returns from injury to replace them) is at least as critical as the more lauded starters on your list. Sanchez and Urshela similarly can make a huge difference and, like Kepler, have higher ex-ante uncertainty than the hitters at the top of the list.
  15. One of the advantages of the relegation system. They'd be trying a lot harder if it meant staying in the majors next year.
  16. He lost me when the harassment allegations hit. Such allegations are rarely proven, but in my experience usually true. That his play since then has spiraled downward has made me less conflicted about disliking him.
  17. Is there a post somewhere on which of the high picks signed? I've lost track.
  18. There are so many differences: (1) He is playing in a much more spacious park, where he won't get as many cheap extra-base hits. (2) He does not have a killer lineup surrounding him, where he is just one of many top hitters. (3) He does not have anyone banging on a can to tell him about curve balls. (4) He does not have Verlander and company to make sure that his offensive production leads to lots of wins. Unfortunately, he is not a Strat-o-Matic card that works the same regardless of environment.
  19. Beloit has been the Sky Carp all season. Did they change to something else last night?
  20. Will Toronto be missing any non-vaccinated players? Or does that just go one way?
  21. And how embarrassing that they all seem to have worn the same dress.
