    Are the fans who keep the game alive benefiting from those ad dollars? The extra ad between half-innings adds a few feet to the owners' yachts and a few rooms to the star players' mansions, but it certainly doesn't seem to lower ticket prices! On the pitch clock, I remember Jim Kaat in his later years (not for the Twins) quick-pitching on every pitch in order to throw off the hitters' routines. Maybe one of our pitchers whose raw stuff is not quite enough could try that.

    It is certainly true that baseball will continue for colleges and minor leagues. But how much of the attraction to these games (from players as well as fans) is based on the existence of the golden prize of major-league baseball? If that were to disappear or be seriously impaired over the long run, what would happen to the minor leagues? Would they disappear or would they morph into a (perhaps less flawed) baseball pyramid with the rot at the top removed?

    He came to the Twins (along with others) from Texas in a trade for Bert Blyleven in 1976. Interesting that they both ended up as Twins broadcasters 40 years later.

    Good stuff. I remember Darwin well. But I believe that the American League went from 154 games to 162 in 1961, when the league enlarged and 154 could not be made to come out even with a symmetric schedule. With 7 opponents, 7 x 22 = 154, but with 9 opponents, 9 x 18 = 162. So his 145 games is a slightly smaller, though still impressive, fraction of the total season.

    Battey was always one of my favorite Twins! He just had a calm, consistent demeanor that was reflected in his play.

    This is a wonderful, nostalgic series! I have just one humble suggestion to improve it: Could you put the date of the story in the top lines? Sometimes it takes me half of the paragraph to figure out the point in the season (or off-season) to which the article pertains.

    Based on TD, most of the fan base currently blames the owners. That might have something to do with the players not accepting outside mediation. They have the advantage at present in the court of public opinion, Why submit to another "court" where they might not fare so well?

    I think it's a safe guess that most people who are not invested in baseball probably don't even know that there is a stoppage and wouldn't start paying any attention at all until at least April (and more likely August).

    Yes. I pretty much gave up on him two days after the draft. Strikeouts, walks, and occasional homeruns. Yawn! Don't we already have about 10 of him in the system?

    Thanks, Seth. I came to Twins Daily as the successor to Seth Speaks and your posts about prospects are my favorite part of the site. There is always something about which to be optimistic even in the darkest of times for the big club!

    I think that, rather than a tank-and-rebuild philosophy, the Twins aspire to emulating St. Louis: a perennial contender and occasional pennant winner. This requires not a break-down followed by rebuild, but a steady flow of young talent overlapping with a selective investment in veteran talent. If this is the case, they really should have signed Berrios to an extension, but everything else fits. Of course, Maeda's injury is a monkey-wrench in the works for next year, but I think the front office wants the young generation (Kirilloff, Larnach, Duran, Balazovic, Martin, Lewis, etc.) to take over soon and does not want to block them with expensive, aging players on the decline.

    I pay the most attention to Twins games during Arraez's at-bats because they are enjoyable and the ball is usually in play so there is action. He is about the only Twin who keeps the defense honest by spraying the ball all over the field. With so many of his teammates, the outcomes are predictably boring to watch: strikeout, walk, flyball, grounder into the shift, homerun. If he's gone, will I watch at all?

    With all due respect, what does expertise does FanGraphs (or anyone else) have in predicting durability? As has been said hundreds of times in these virtual pages, if he's healthy, he's a brilliant defender and potentially a dominating hitter ... if he's healthy. If his health retains its recent form, you can divide the numbers in half.

    I also enjoy these lists and think the separation of pitchers from hitters is useful to avoid meaningless comparisons. If you separated starters from relievers, you might think about only doing 15 of each to keep 30 total pitchers. Of course, it's often hard to tell with prospects which ones will end up in the rotation vs. the bullpen.
