  1. I readily admit I was one of those guys. Same things were said about Hicks and Buxton is pretty much the same point Hicks was earlier this year: his hitting mechanics are a little messy in the lower trunk. Hicks got fixed by using the "step in the bucket" approach. Buxton's front foot is still tapping around too much. At some point, Buxton needs to commit that front foot before he can hit.
  2. I like all the "Buxton runs really fast and catches the ball" stuff. Hey, he has a pretty good arm, too. But he's still GOT to hit and have a much better OBP. If he doesn't greatly improve over the last few weeks of the season and in Spring Training, Buxton's in for a 3rd trip back to AAA. Just like Hicks did.
  3. At their point in development, I doesn't make sense to me to compare Berrios to Gonsalves. Gonsalves has moved up through A-ball at a steady pace. AA sometime next year. Just for the record: Ryan's quote on not bringing up Berrios: "It was difficult," Ryan said. "We're all sensitive to the innings, and there's no question that's a factor. He's also about 5-foot-11, 187 pounds, so it's not like this is a 6-4, 200-pounder. So I'm a little concerned we don't do any damage when he's built up a good resume."
  4. Right On! This is what September should be all about for the Twins. Get the young players up, acclimated, and in the field rotation. The starting staff is in motion. The outfield rotation is in motion: last night, Hunter was DH and Rosario, Hicks and Buxton were on the field. Yeah, Buxton needs more development time: he was needed, his only real weapon is speed, **** happens. The injury Sano suffered couldn't have come at a worst time.
  5. Yeah, but how many people actually expected the Twins to be in the playoff hunt this year? I believe that, based on the last 4 years, management was always planning for next year.
  6. Would the Twins really send a rehab guy to a MiLB team that's in the playoffs? I'd find that kinda stunning.
  7. I never really been all that big on the single closer model. That an the really cheap saves made available by baseball rules. I think it's pretty clear that Perkins has been burning out his body in the 1st half of the season for a couple years now. He's 32yrs old, so, yeah the Twins need to figure this out. Co-closers: Jepson and Perkins. Maybe that gets the Twins 2-3 years to get a few relievers ready.
  8. Jepsen, Cotts and Hunter were all brought in for a reason. Hunter, to full the gap in development time for Hicks, Rosario and Buxton, provide vocal leadership and easy some of the pain in having both Schaefer and Robinson on the same roster. Jepsen and Cotts were brought in because the veterans that were bought in and Perkins were burning out. The guys brought up from MiLB kinda sucked as a whole. I don't know why anyone is still bringing David Price. Either Ryan didn't make an offer [building from the minors up] or he made an offer and Detroit countered "Give us Sano and + + + +".
  9. I think the larger issue/difference between Pelfrey the RP and the SP is his fastball. His fastball was much stronger as a RP and relied on it for a lot for outs. As a starter, he started throw more breaking balls, which just isn't his strong suit. Twins should have done the same thing they did to Latroy Hawkins. Leave him as a reliever and make him throw heat.
  10. From Phil Miller in the Strib: "Pelfrey owned a 2.28 ERA on June 7, fifth best in the AL, but after giving up seven runs in four innings to the Astros, five days after allowing four run in 3⅔ innings, his ERA has nearly doubled, to 4.17." I agree with Danchat: he started off the year in the bullpen and I would have left him there. What Pelfrey is doing right now is just history. Could see this one coming a mile away.
  11. It's way past time the Twins yank Pelfrey from the rotation and put him in the bullpen, where he actually could be useful. 2.28 ERA on June 7, 4.17 now.
  12. And back where he belongs in centerfield!
  13. I got to watch Vargas playing 1B a couple times. He really didn't embarrass himself. I'm not banging on Mauer, but I'd like to seem him playing 1st more than a few times in September.
  14. CBS Sports says Hicks will be activated on Friday: http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasybaseball/update/25288605/twins-of-aaron-hicks-ready-for-friday-return Good. Buxton needs to sit for awhile and take some more coaching on how to hit.
  15. I'm with Terry on this one: No way, Jose. This years success has been great, but this is a pretty flawed team. Sano and Hicks have been a great pick-me-ups, Dozier, a 1st half of Hunter, the return of Escobar as a starter. Buxton is still a prospect, despite his lack of taking a walk or hitting [probably another round in MiLB, like Hicks], several more promising prospects at various MiLB levels.... Considering they're playing for the 2nd wildcard spot, I wouldn't do anything that would slightly risk the future of the Twins.
  16. If you're demanding perfection from umpires, players, owners, coaches, etc., there is a plethora of baseball video games available. I love the human element. I love the Monday morning quarterback-type discussions, the beauty of a nicely executed double play, a brush-back pitch and the memories of Earl Weaver and Billy Martin running out of the dugout to argue with umpires. That's why we play the games.
  17. To suck or not to suck. Is that the question? Pedro Florimon was considered an elite defensive shortstop, at least by Gardy. Where is he now? Buxton has the quick wrists to be able to hit in the MLB. He just needs time to work out his mechanics some more. He's been so bad at the plate I can't really tell how good is eye is. If, like Sano, Buxton had some 0'fer days that included a walk, it would be a different story. The real question here is whether that should happen while the Twins as a whole are chasing the final WC spot?
  18. D Santana: end of last year [mainly in CF] had regular AB's and was successful. Fast forward to 2015: Moved back to his original SS, had fielding issues, got yanked from starting lineup and with diminished, regular AB's, didn't hit either. E Esocbar: after a successful 2014 season at SS with regular AB's, EE gets moved to a utility role, has diminished regular AB's and doesn't hit well. Fast forward to a ~month ago, EE is moved into the starting SS role and "hitting .295/.375/.577 in August with much sharper defense and surprisingly strong plate discipline" Is the ability to have a starting role and consistent AB's directly related to better all around performance? Or a fluke compared to their minor league production?
  19. Statistically, it's still possible for the Twins to lose 90 games. All it would take is for them to lose 22 of the remaining 31 games. Can't imagine what it would take for that to happen....
  20. I'm sure 1 or 2 local writers [Phil Miller, Jim Souhan] will vote for Miguel just to make themselves look good. Miguel has appeared in 50 games, 211 PA's. This award is Most Valuable Player for the year. The definition, even according to the BBWAA. Read here: http://bbwaa.com/voting-faq/ In slightly less than a 3rd of a season, check with me next year. This year, I don't believe he deserves a vote.
  21. Phil Miller is reporting, from a Twins source: "First baseman Kennys Vargas, shortstop Danny Santana, catcher Eric Fryer and righthanded reliever Michael Tonkin will be at Target Field on Tuesday. More are expected to join the team once minor league seasons end next Monday or, in the case of Class AA Chattanooga, after the Southern League playoffs." For those interested in Berrios: "The 21-year-old Puerto Rican has pitched a career-high 161 innings this season and is not on the 40-man roster, so promoting him would require waiving a player." Berrios added: “I respect the boss and the decision.” Will Berrios get called up? Probably. He deserves it for the great year he's had. Will he pitch? meh.
  22. Question: Should we be concerned about ABW2's low BA and really high K's? His OPS is a solid above average, maybe even borderline very good. His BB's are pretty good, considering he's K'd 187 times. I'm kinda hoping he has potential to approximate another Sano.....
  23. Very nicely written! Seriously, you had me at "Amidst their organizational swoon in recent years, the Twins have typically set a modest goal at the outset of each season: play meaningful games in September." Twins could really use a guy like Abreu hitting behind Sano. With Sano's patience at the plate, maybe the other way around. Not sure there's any of those in the minors. Prospects, yes. An Abreu, not that I know of. What I'd really like to see out of this series is Buxton taking a few walks. He really needs to learn the strike zone.
  24. I like the 5. Twins need to find out what they've got in Vargas, Achter and Tonkin. The only development time Santana lost is when the Twins moved him back to short after a successful year as a CF. Just like the bad move they made with Escobar. Look where he is now.... Fryer? Do the Twins really need a 3rd catcher? A backup anything will not hit very well if the don't get consistent PA's.
  25. Trading your starting third baseman while you're still in the battle for the last wildcard spot is one of the more bizarre ideas I've heard. Play out the season and let Plouffe and Sano slug it out in Spring Training 2016.
