  1. I was always against the notion of moving Hicks out of CF for Buxton, the unfinished product. September is almost here: Do you send him back to AAA to work on his hitting or leave him where he is to work with Bruno? I don't think tuning Buxton's approach and swing should be that big of a deal. And, yeah! The MN Twins are still in the wildcard conversation!
  2. I believe the Twins have already talked to Hicks about playing a corner OF position. Paul Molitor: “We’ll probably expose him to a little defense other than center field,” the manager said, “just to give us flexibility.”
  3. There are feedbags that can make that happen
  4. The guy I was thinking of was Jim Dwyer.
  5. There was a guy who play for the Twins a long-ish time ago who was referred to as a "professional hitter". I can't remember his name, but he was a really good contact / clutch hitter. Crowley, maybe? Anyway, that's the type of hitter I'd want on the bench to pinch hit. Vargas isn't a contact hitter.
  6. So, are they in contention for the #2 wild card spot or not?
  7. Or would you rather TR settle for more Boyers and Stauffers out of the pen, and commit to Nolasco-Santana-Hughes-Milone in the rotation regardless of performance? A little reality check: Nolasoco, E. Santana and Hughes are already under contract. If healthy, they are in the rotation. What you're proposing is spending more money to fill the bullpen holes when May is already there. Spending for the sake of spending.
  8. Looking at the more recent boxscores, it occurs to me that Molitor/Allen are using the bullpen more like the Royals....
  9. Honestly, Chief, why would you even spend the money when you've got the guy sitting on your roster right now? I like a bullpen that starts with Trevor May, Casey Fien [the ANGRY Fien, not the early 2015 one], Kevin Jepsen and Glen Perkins as co-closers [because Perkins is wearing out]. Toss in a LOOGY or 2 and I'm pretty happy. I also think May deserves a shot at SP. He's been a good soldier and deserves some respect for that.
  10. The starting staff is made up of free agent signings that had health issues and a pitcher [ Milone ] who has a history of not being able to pitch more than 160-175 innings before wearing out. These kind of things happen during the course of the season. I still don't know about Buxton. And I still don't know about the Twins playoff chances. I say let him play out the year in MLB. And I'd kinda want to see an OF of Rosario, Hicks and Buxton.
  11. Well, the "poor roster construction" by management has the Twins, at the very least, in the playoff conversation.
  12. Nice article, Nick. Kennys Vargas is #2 of 3 that were holding their own HR derby in Spring Training when it was supposed to be batting practice. All 3 paid the price when they got sent down. And again, when need arisen, when Eddie Rosario was called up before them. Sano was #1; Arcia #3. There are a lot of similarities between Vargas and Ortiz. Both are BIG for baseball players. Vargas is HUGE. It sounds like he's getting it together. I think [ got not stats ] that it takes large player longer to develop a consistent swing and approach than most. That being said, I don't like calling up Vargas to be a pinch hitter at all. My view of a pinch hitter is a high-contact/walk person. He's been hitting better, not great. I don't believe a Sept. call-up is warranted. If he finishes strong this year, he gets to fight for a roster spot in 2016 Spring Training.
  13. The continuing over-reaction by some is getting flat out boring. Maybe you should pause a bit and listen to what the manager says: ``It wasn't happening for him tonight,'' Twins manager Paul Molitor said, `` and I thought the best chance was to get someone else up there and give him some swings, given the way his night had gone.'' Molitor said it looked like Buxton was having trouble seeing the ball. At this point, hitting 1st or 9th shouldn't matter to Buxton. If it does, he should be hitting in Rochester.
  14. I'm not all that big on "prospect" lists. They're still unproven prospects. That being said: level after level, Berrios had proven himself. I don't know if it will be a cursory callup, but I'd like to see him get at least a little action against MLB batters.
  15. The data is interesting, but is based on a group of players. And in my book, that doesn't count for much more than interesting stats. Coaches watch their players and make judgement calls. Number of innings pitched is nothing more than a guideline. Berrios has pitched only 15 more innings than last year, so I don't believe the end is near. Just not sure I'd want to take the chance and suffer the rath of TD'ers.
  16. Why are people finding it interesting that Ryan is in town to watch his top-level minor league players at work? Isn't there a big roster expansion coming up in a few days? The best I can say about it is this: Berrios performed extremely well with the boss in the stands. My understanding is Berrios is facing an innings pitched limit and they may want to keep him in Rochester for a potential playoff run. Either way, I wouldn't want to see him pushed too hard and ruin that potential. After what he has done, he deserves at least a perfunctory courtesy callup.
  17. I think this is one of the more bizarre topics I've seen in my relatively short time on TD. 1. E. Santana hasn't pitched well in the last 5 starts 2. The Twins are in the Wild Card hunt 3. Because of the suspension, E. Santana can not pitch in the playoffs 4. Why in the hell is E. Santana still pitching? It's time to sit him down; May is still available.
  18. Is it "No man's land" or "Just no man, just noooooo..."
  19. Honestly, would you?
  20. Off-seaon nightmare scenario? That's an easy one: The Twins actually squeaking into the playoffs. Shortly after the Twins are kicked out of the playoffs, you'll hear this from management and ownership: We had a successful year and made it to the playoffs. No need to make changes......
  21. Yeah, that's really it. 4 consecutive 90 loss seasons. People demanded changes. You got changes [some they didn't like] and here the Twins sit today at 61 wins, 61 losses]. The farm system is producing [sano, Rosario, Hicks, etc.] and there's still more potential in prospects Buxton, Berrios, Polanco, Gordon and a host of others. It's ample enough that with only a few years of development time the Twins could field a competent+ team made up of former Twins farmhands. I'm not seeing what the big beef is with Ryan. The problem some have is Ryan has a steady hand and won't mortgage the future for very limited, short-term success. Not that I'd mind seeing him flip some MLB players and prospects for a Chris Sale........
  22. Does Manny Sanguillen have any grandkids running around that can catch?
  23. I never did. I think we should be really, really happy with the 61-61 record Twins have right now. I suspect this move is one of: 1. Admission that current minor leagues aren't really ready 2. Cotts is only here because of #1 above.
