  1. Perkins has had health issues post All Star break for the last couple years. Overthrowing, being used too much? IDK. I think Molitor is very smart to be concerned and cautious with the entire pitching staff. As for the rest of the team: they're in uncharted territory. This is the 1st time in [ how many? ] years that they've played in meaningful games, post All Star break. It's somewhere between "learning on the job" and "suck it up" time.
  2. Both Jepsen and Perkins are at the age where you begin to wonder how much is left in the tank. Both have had back injuries this year, I believe Jepsen has had some health issues in the past [someone correct me]. We know Perkins has been burning out over the past couple years. Co-closers make sense until one of the relievers in MiLB step up. What I find more interesting is how several playoff-hopeful teams are running their games like NL teams.
  3. Congratulations to Tyler Duffey on a great year! So, how does Duffey fit into next years rotation? Many are not enamored with the rotation setup. What is (is there?) a plan to phase out some of the veterans to make room for a successful minor league, turned successful major league, pitcher?
  4. I would think Nolasco would be put on the waiver wire long before the Twins embarrass themselves by trying to trade him.
  5. Great season and news for Kepler! Playing time? meh. The only message being sent here is Congratulations on a great year from an appreciative Twins management.
  6. I've been watching his stats for a few weeks now. As of yesterday, Eddie has more triples than walks! Just amazing! More doubles and 3 HR's away from passing his current walks total. Just stunning
  7. From what I remember, that's the reason Molitor wanted Rosario up before any of the other prospects.
  8. Torii Hunter has been a warrior for the Twins. Are we forgetting who was part of the OF rotation early this year? Jordan Schaeffer and Shane Robinson. I do, however, like Robinson as a 4th outfielder. Hunter, like many other Twins players, is just burning out. Pretty typical for a team that hasn't had a sniff of the playoffs in 4 years. Buxton and Kepler will be in the MiLB unless something drastic happens in Spring Training. I haven't seen Buxton in the starting lineup in a few days. I would retain Hunter as 4th OF, DH and pinch hitter. I think he'd be very successful. As for the $10 mil they paid for him last year: meh. Not my money.
  9. Filling in for Doc: Thanks, and stop calling me Shirley.
  10. Great analysis! What caught my eye was how much Escobar's 2013 right-side hitting looks similar to Buxton right now. The tap, tap tapping thing isn't a big deal. But not planting that front foot is. I'm starting to believe that the Twins hitting coaches actually have an organizational plan for developing hitters! Esocbar's line in his 59 games this year at SS: .311BA .359OBP .539SLG .898OPS
  11. "For the immediate future, shortstop will be manned by Eduardo Escobar or whatever free agent the Twins choose to bring in over the offseason." Really? Checkout Escobar's stats and explain to me why his status as the starting shortstop is only "immediate future". Last 23 games: .310BA .344OPB .609SLG .953OPS 59 games this year as a SS: .311 .359 .539 .898
  12. In the history of professional sports [ok,ok, I'm not THAT old] I can only think of 1 player that was truly a superstar that signed with a pretty poor team: Reggie White signing a free agent contract with the Packers. But Reggie was a pretty special guy. Besides being a terror on the field, he was also a minister. I'm not saying that it's completely impossible for the Twins to sign an Ace pitcher. All they gotta do is find a guy like the late great Reggie White.
  13. So, what you're saying is money isn't the issue. The selection of what the Twins are spending it on is. Ok, true. But here's the question: If you are a very talented person, one that some would consider an Ace at what you do, would you go work for a company that has a very recent history of incredible failures? That's the real life of pro-team sports. You want to be a winner/successful? Go to work for a successful organization.
  14. Beware the "5-tool player" ............
  15. Always an interesting read for those of us who don't get a chance to watch MiLB games! For Trevor Hildenberger: with his overwhelming success in A-ball, wouldn't a move to AA next year make sense? What to do with Michael Tonkin? Hook him up with another organizations AAA affiliate and see how he does against different hitter? He's 25 and in the MiLB since 2008. Somethings gotta change, right?
  16. "Because while the Twins may or may not overcome the Astros (or Rangers) and earn a chance to participate in the wild-card play-in, we're still getting to experience the excitement of contention in September, adding a level of drama that previously would have been amiss." Manufactured, not earned, drama IMHO.
  17. OMG, that's Roy Smalley on the Twins broadcast? He needs to stop talking once in a while He sounds more like a management shill each time I hear him. Yea, I think the MLB experience is good for him, like it was for Hicks. Buxton's hitting has been bad. He had a 2 hit game yesterday, so maybe something is changing. However, in 121 PA's he has only 5 walks. For the season, Buxton has a .242 OBP and a .514 OPS, the latter Bill James rates a "G Atrocious". The thing I would want to see is better plate discipline. I believe Molitor wants the same thing, as he is sitting Buxton and pinch hitting for him a lot. There's not much left of the season, so he really bears watching over the final few weeks.
  18. Roberto Molina, catcher. Any chance he's the spawn of one of the many Molina's that are MLB catchers?
  19. I like the way Terry Ryan is handling things. Some people are ready when they're ready [ Sano ]. Some, you want to be a little more careful with. Buxton is one [he only got called up because there was a need], Berrios is another. He's really proven himself by his ability to make adjustments at each new level. And I like what Duffey and Gonsalves has done so far. A future 3/5ths of a rotation.
  20. A sign of bigger, better things to come?
  21. Perkins is not entrenched as the closer. At least he shouldn't be. The way he's been breaking down after the around the All Star break, I would have start looking for a replacement 2-3 years ago. I'm a little stunned that the advanced statistics crowd hasn't shot down the Save stat. And Storen, let me see if I get this straight: he publicly voices his discontent about the Papelbon trade, suddenly starts pitching poorly, gets upset after a game and punches out his locker and breaks his thumb. You really want this guy?? Adding reference to "Save Replacement" stats. Would have posted before, but found "Meltdown" to be a little bitchy... http://grantland.com/the-triangle/blowing-up-baseballs-most-dangerous-stat/ http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/sd-md/
  22. Thank you. People here either grossly overrate Twins players or assume the GM on the other end is an idiot. Hey, why not include Nolasco? Yeah. The Brewers definitely wouldn't want other teams hand-me-downs. The report I read: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/327129841.html says it's a mild concussion, but also warned that concussions are unpredictable and recoveries vary. Since we're rapidly approaching the off-season, I'd at least kick the tires on Lucroy. As far as Wieters: a 30 yr old catcher that just had ACL surgery? I don't want to replace Suzuki that much. I'd like to see the Twins work on a deal for MiLB catcher with an upside and rotate him with Suzuki on a regular basis. Can't tell the worth of a backup catcher if he rarely plays.
  23. So a homer on a Rockies blog suggests trading Reyes [base salary $22 mil for the next 3 years] for Nolasco [ $12 mil the next 2 years, plus 1 $13 mil option] and anyone thinks this is a good idea? Reyes is 32yrs. old and hurt, yet again. Seriously, I'd just cut Nolasco before I'd do this trade. And save $10 mil per year by not making the trade. Translation: In the 2 blogs: RockiesZingers + Reyes = Twins Daily + Nolacso
