Twins Pre-Trade Deadline Needs - Potential In-House Solutions
terrydactyls commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
Don't forget Kiersey, Jr. He can cover LF, take over CF when Buxton needs a rest (or gets injured), and Castro can return to being the super utility guy. -
I've always wondered what WPA meant. I thought it was a reference to the Great Depression Works Progress Administration. The explanation also confirms for me that it's a pretty silly statistic.

I am so high on Sabato that I think he should be part of every trade package the Twins put together when searching for trade deadline help. Now, for posters like RpR, this is an example of a tongue-in-cheek comment. It is not a definitive statement about Sabato's abilities or his potential value in a trade. Just a little humor on a dreary, rainy Sunday in Maine.

I think that the front office was confused by having two players named Diego Castllo in the system and they decided to DFA one of them. I hope they knew which one was the pitcher.

I see no need to add anyone to the bullpen (especially a rental). IF the Twins get into the playoffs and they decide on Ober, Lopez, and Ryan as the starters, they can add Varland, Woods Richardson, and Paddock to the bullpen. That's a better (and cheaper) alternative.

Doesn't Larnach hit from the first base side of home plate? Riddle me this, Batman, how does a left-hander hit an opposite field double to right field?

Canterino and Prielipp were not bad picks. It just hasn't worked out they way everyone hoped. It's like when I was in college and I asked out a gorgeous woman. She agreed to go out with me but cancelled at the last minute because her sorority called an emergency meeting she had to attend. I didn't make a bad pick. It was just an unfortunate result. I'm sure the sorority meeting was very important. At least that's what I've been telling myself for the past 55 years.

My memory is not infallible but as I remember the 2017 draft hype, the home-town fan favorite was Hunter Greene, followed by either Lewis or McKay, and then Gore. I do not remember Wright being a an option for first pick. Hindsight being 20/20, it appears that Lewis was the route to go. He is still a five tool player: hitting for average, hitting for power, fielding, throwing, and for the fifth tool, I'm dropping running and replacing it with leadership/inspiration or whatever you want to call it. He brings a spark and energy into the game that is amazing.

I've asked this before and haven't gotten any response (including sending an email directly to the front office of the DSL but got no response). Is the DSL restricted to A) only players that are from the Dominican Republic, B) only players who are primarily Hispanic, or C) is it open to anyone?

Can someone answer my question? Is Lewis hurt or was he just not used?

Is Lewis hurt? If not, why didn"t he pinch hit for Vasquez in the bottom of the 9th? His batting average is only 200 points higher than Vasquez.

These reports of what might be available are depressing. I think the Twins should stay out of the trade market and work with what they have at both the major league and the minor league levels.

I read the minor league review every day. One thing I've noticed is that many big innings are fueled by multiple walks/HBP. A six-run inning may consist of four walks, two HBPs, a ground out, and two hits.

Analytics are a mathematical tool. The "statistics" of a particular player are absorbed into the database and are a minute piece of data. Gut feel says I know what the analytics tell me but I don't care. I'm going with how I feel.

Here is the difference between analytics and gut feel. Situation: Bottom of the eighth inning. Winning run is on second. A left-hand pitcher is on the mound. A left-hand batter is the next man up. The analytics guy thinks any right-hand batter is a better option and sends up whatever right-hand hitter he has on the bench to pinch hit. The gut feel manager thinks that the left-hand batter due up next has always hit this particular pitcher pretty well so he doesn't pinch hit. Analytics versus gut feel.

A lot of "perhaps" in that paragraph but I do agree with your comment about playing time. IMHO, it takes at least a month of consistent playing to settle in. Willie Mays started his MLB career by going 1 for 25. Leo Durocher told him to stop trying to pull the ball and just make contact. Obviously that advice worked out pretty well for Willie and 73 years later, it would probably work for many Twins' players today. But home runs are the goal today so I don't think it will happen. Plus Baldelli would've had Mays pinch hit a couple times a week and then optioned him back to the Minneapolis Millers.y

I have a question about the Dominican Summer League and it may sound a little racist, but I sure don't intend for it to be. I'm just ignorant of the DSL rules and I'm too lazy to do any research. Reading all the DSL reports, it seems as though all the names are Hispanic. Is the DSL restricted to only players from the Dominican Republic or only to Hispanic players?
