    I think the window opened in 2017, but I don’t think it will close... [counts to five]... I don’t think it will necessarily close in 2021. The Twins should be competitive for a long time. It would be nice to see something more than a division crown at some point. That’s not nothing, but they need to make a deep run in the postseason—at least into the ALCS. That’s what success looks like to the fans, regardless of what Twins brass tell themselves. In the next year or two, the Twins will need to extend Berrios and one or two of Graterol, Ober, Duran, or name your favorite, those will need to blossom as starters, plus some others developing and some supplementing via free agency, then things should be okay. (I still hold out hope for Tyler Wells in some role). Free agency will also need to be part of this.

    The Saints have great rushers. I have no idea how the Vikings are going to keep up on offense. Maybe hit on a couple screens? (Even though they will be looking for them?) A Cook draw at the right moment? Fake punt formations converted to first downs?

    Tough, tough draw. I think the Saints are the best all-around team in the NFC. I have no idea what the Vikings need to do to keep it close.

    Fair enough. The White Sox signed the 7, 13, and 25 top free agents out of the Top 25 that offseason per MLBTR. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/2014-15-top-50-free-agents-with-predictions.html I don’t remember what the discussion was on Twins Daily. And my next question would be what the White Sox payrolls were in those years, as a percentage of revenues. Either way, I don’t think the 14-15 offseason has much bearing on what is happening now, except to say that the White Sox ownership appears willing to spend when they feel an opportunity is in front of them.

    I definitely agree Tim Anderson, but Moncada is a slugger entering his prime, and a dip in that guy’s babip doesn’t necessarily mean he’s due for a down season.

    Yeah, from 35,000 feet... .... I’d put Detroit at well more than 100 losses (by August 31), KC approaching 100 losses again, and honesty assuming the Twins have some regression from their historic all-time offensive season, probably the other three teams are a crapshoot.

    Player valuations are as much science as art nowadays. I’m not sure how much I trust this trend to quantify ballplayers, either. The pitchers Kirilloff compares to above have shown flashes of promise or even brilliance in the major leagues. I don’t think Kirilloff (or Larnach) is a 1:1 trade with many—or any—of those pitchers. I personally think McCullers is a future Cy Young vote-getter.

    Sure it would have. Bumgarner signed for 5/85. Do you think he would have listened to a slightly front-loaded contract offer for 4/81 with an opt-out after year two? Wheeler signed for 5/118. Do you think he would have listened to an offer for 4/112?

    Well then, what are your thoughts on the front office bringing back essentially the same exact players as last year, without adding anyone different?

    I think that's slightly unfair, as Mike usually expresses his yes/no opinions about free agents while other posters seem to wait in the weeds until after something happens, but I agree it would be nice to get the thread back on track. Trade, pivot, keep the powder dry.... I would trade. I just don't see any buy low opportunities right now. And the Twins are not exactly making calls from a position of strength right now. But I would offer up a Kirilloff or Dobnak/Lewis/Thorpe.

    Are you sure? I doubt it. My recollection is that it was either Buxton, or Lewis, as a headliner, not both. But based on media reporting, I don't think the Twins every took that offer seriously, nor did the fans here.

    Based on the front office’s failure to make competitive offers to good free agents, and the ridiculously team-friendly extensions to Kepler and Polanco who are entering their primes, it’s easy for me to assume the extension offer to Escobar was ridiculously low.

    I’ve been wondering all season when they would run a trick play. Then they ran that reverse option and as Diggs looked to pass I said to myself “jesus no.” Zimmer just has no feel for modern football. Zimmer is not horrible but he needs to go. Speilman has put together some good talent but he needs to go too. Or at least give up some of his duties. Ownership has spent the money but changes need to be made.

    Strasburg is 30. Odorizzi is 30. Wheeler is 30. And so on. With all due respect, this age argument is unpersuasive, at best.

    He hit a huge home run off of Verlander in the ALCS last year, so season paid for. Postseason heroics counts for something to plenty of fans.

    I have gotten the impression he is going to Atlanta or Washington. In any case, Donaldson doesn’t pitch, so his impact on the current Twins team might not be worth the cost.
