From the point of view of the pitcher, I don’t mind the other pitcher batting. I like having that easy out at the bottom of the order. Doing some fact checking though, I was surprised to find out NL games weren’t necessarily finished sooner or lower scoring because of it. I guess the pitcher usually bats 2-3 times at most.

Couple of highlights from a KFAN interview with Tim Tschida this afternoon: 1) Sign stealing—beyond just the runner on second base watching for the catcher to put down ones or twos—goes back a long time; 2) Teams policed this themselves without outside help, and sign stealing was the cause of lots of the beanballs, brushback pitches, and onfield brawls that occurred when it wasn’t otherwise apparent what was going on; 3) Tschida thinks MLB should indeed take back those Astros World Series rings. Another poster somewhere alluded to those rings as being the most important possession those players have, and Tschida kind of confirmed that. Even removing the Astros as 2017 champions should be up for discussion. 4) the technology is so good and so pervasive that a sign steal scandal like this is bound to happen again.

There might not be a device attached there, but I am not sold on your reasons for that. Like I said, don’t underestimate an athlete’s ability to be absent-minded and overly confident of himself. There are academic studies that show that cheaters and fibbers in any walk of life only embolden themselves the more they fib and cheat.

Yeah but that gold tape is cool and shiny! I don’t know Reddick, but let’s not overestimate the intelligence of professional athletes.

On second look, the tape bends funny depending on his movements, the light, and maybe the clothes shifting. However I'm not ready to say there's nothing under there.

Yep, I will now expect that if the Twins fall out of contention in any given year (or mistakenly think they are out of contention like in 2017 or 2018), there will be a sell-off of major league players.

I went back and looked at the thread Vanimal linked to in November when this came out. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/35518-astros-being-investigated-for-using-tech-to-steal-pitching-signs/?p=935074 I will backtrack my earlier statements. The banging was almost instantaneous after the catcher put the sign down. I would still like to know how common this was, and what signals they used in what games. I know there are one or two video clips floating around of banging on trash can lids. I’ve got to think there was more to it than that, or we would have dozens of clips. That particular sound would be pretty obvious and I think people would catch on pretty quickly. But you are right, it could still be an audio signal that hasn’t been revealed yet.

While agreeing with all of the above, I also can’t help thinking that if pitchers weren’t taking so much time to deliver the pitch, this type of cheating would be minimal. I don’t know, let’s see what turns up. Knowing what pitch is coming is huge, but I doubt batters would have much time to look away from the pitcher, decode the signal, and then bring their eyes back to the pitcher’s delivery slot before the pitch comes. And that’s the last step in the process. Illegal sign stealing like this... I think it would work only under the right conditions.

Personally, I’ve always hated that sort of penalty. That’s really a dig at the fans, in my opinion, who don’t deserve it.

That is a fascinating idea. Frankly, pitchers should be wearing helmets or some sort of protective cover by now anyway.

Himch doesn’t seem like such a bad guy in this. I’ve only skimmed media reports of it however.
