    I don’t disagree with any of this, and I do think there will be a minor signing and minor trade made before the season starts. But the really impactful guys are taken, at this point.

    I was with you up to the last sentences. I don’t think the typical fan posting here has the time or interest in producing the type of numbers you are looking for. On some basic level, I think the front office needed to step back and just say to themselves “is Wheeler/Bumgarner good for this rotation?”... and the answer is Yes, and I think fans get this. You and the front office take the other view of looking at it purely analytically. The rotation is in shambles. I don’t think this is going to end well, but we’ll see.

    Jury is still out on whether Odorizzi is a #2 pitcher, though he did pitch like one last season. That trade was in February. Gerrit Cole was a January trade if I recall, a trade I really wanted the Twins to make. But I really don’t see any Gerrit Coles out there this year. Edit: Vanimal and Seth also began discussion threads in favor of trading for Gerrit Cole two years ago. Maybe they have some ideas for who to trade for this offseason.

    As far as I can find, the so-called “national reporting” that Wheeler did not want to come to Minnesota traces back to a single sentence in an Athletic article. A single sentence that got amplified by people like Darren Wolfson and then repeated over and over on these discussion boards, until those who wanted to believe it finally believed it. Meanwhile, Bumgarner’s entire press conference was devoted to his love for Arizona, the beautiful sunsets and his desire to play there. So, compare the two, and you tell me. Now, although Wheeler does not mention anything about family in his Philly press conference (linked below), there was a cryptic remark by another person at the table that might be worthy of some discussion here, if anyone wants to take me up on it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KWfR8aGTwgE

    This article seems rushed. I have a lot of problems with this analogy of Christian Ponder! Seriously though.. the suggestion that it’s easier to acquire a very good starting pitcher at the trade deadline also seems dubious to me— shouldn’t they have done that last July?

    I’d be open-minded to a Ryu signing. I’m aware of his ERAs but I still think it’s a cut below a Wheeler or Bumgarner signing.

    Yeah with Julio Teheran and Gio Gonzalez off the board, I don’t know who that leaves after Keuchel and Ryu. Homer Bailey maybe. I may be missing one or two. But basically just minor league signings with invitations to camp, those types of guys. But let’s wait until April 15th until we pass judgment.

    Yes, that is what I am saying. Offer him something he can’t refuse, like the Yankees did with Cole. Yes? I’m addition, I think the “health concern” is a crutch. It’s like a sports version of the fortune cookie joke: you can add the words “if he’s healthy” to just about every statement made about any player’s performance. In fact Pineda comes to mind as much as anyone as someone who needs to stay healthy.

    Then he chooses Minnesota’s higher offer and makes his “pile of money” in Minnesota, correct?

    Then after two years, Bumgarner gauges the market and decides whether he should opt out, or not. Either way, after the Twins contract, Bumgarner finally takes his team-friendly deal in Arizona, because money is not Bumgarner’s primary motivation, remember? I mean, we just saw this with Gerrit Cole a week ago, no? Cole was dead set on signing with a California team, telling his teammates as much, until New York showed enough interest in Cole that he was forced to listen. And Cole’s family is from Southern California to boot. “What if Arizona isn’t in position to sign Bumgarner in two years?” Then he takes the below market contract at that time instead. That’s what.

    My reply would be: Why couldn’t the Twins make a serious offer? If the Twins had made a competitive offer we all would have heard about it, to the moon and back. The Twins *should* be paying the most for pitching. They need it the baddest!

    His desire to play in Arizona is clear. On the other hand, these are his earning years, and in my opinion, he can still be a top starter. How about a short term high AAV or front-loaded contract with an opt-out... did the Twins seriously propose anything like that?

    On second thought, I still like the idea of offering him big up-front money, and/or an opt-out after two years, at which time he could go do his Arizona thing after that. The Twins really, really need starting pitching and I really wish they would have been more a part of this Bumgarner negotiation. I mean, Arizona floated a $70 million contract idea to him, and he turned it down earlier in free agency. Sure he wanted to go to Arizona but that does not mean there wasn’t a window or a way to entice him.

    Well, he says he had at least two 5/100+ offers, and get this, his 2020 salary will be... $6 million. (So much for my prediction of front loading to woo him here ) Here is one of the money quotes: “He always loved spending spring training here, to the point that he and his wife occasionally brought out their horses from North Carolina for the two-month stay. He likes Arizona so much that he told his agent, Ed Cerulo of VC Sports, that the Diamondbacks were “the number-one place for me.” He got what he wanted. “It just feels like where I’m supposed to be,” Bumgarner said.
