    I brought up Cain as an example of spending in free agency, not to talk about outfielders. And, another route to... what, exactly? Another route to a quick ALDS exit? I think that's part of why the two sides talk past each other. Many of us feel this team should be striving for a deep postseason run, however that is defined. Maybe, for others, process and effort and feel good statements are what matters. I really, really do not know. Can we at least agree that the team is a "true contender" now? That had been the discussion the past couple years, if I recall correctly. That this team will go in when they are a true contender.

    "He'd be a Twin by now" is perfectly acceptable discussion board talk, and certainly invites disagreement. Consistently calling other posters' comments and opinions "absolutely ludicrous" and other such things is where the comment policy starts to enter the picture.

    I don’t know much about these Marlins guys, so thanks. I wonder what kind of interest these two pitchers drew at the deadline? It’s natural that other teams would value what Rosario brings to the table. Yeah if the Marlins are looking for that profile, major league left-handed bat, give them a call. But the Twins should tread carefully.

    They’ve had opportunities to make those trades, but have been gun shy. Granted, a Syndergaard-Buxton trade during a pennant race would have been the nuclear option, but they have had other trade opportunities besides that one.

    Good example with Gibson. Wheeler is also a good example. And two years ago Darvish was made a big offer by the Yankees early in free agency, and eventually settled for an offer not as high as that one.

    Your sentiment is spot-on. Obviously Bumgarner’s side knew he wouldn’t get Strasburg/Cole money. On the other hand, Wheeler signed for 5/118 a week ago. The Twins then could have come right after and offered Bumgarner just a bit more than Wheeler made. I think it would have gotten donthis would be over and done with

    Are you sure “lucidrous on its face” is the phrase you are after? Sounds kind of harsh, no? An early, serious offer (or almost offer) signals genuine interest. Did the Twins make such a gesture? Do you really believe Bumgarner’s camp knew when Strasburg or Cole would sign?

    There were insider predictions that Bumgarner would sign before the winter meetings. That was their chance. Now with Wheeler and the big two signed, Bumgarner holds all the cards.

    Sure, Minnesota is cold. Especially today, so good thing no games are scheduled. Reminder that Lorenzo Cain signed a 5/80 contract in Milwaukee and they went to Game 7 of the NLCS. We are still waiting for the front office to do something even remotely close to that.

    Good response, though as I read back, I see you dodged my question: What is a World Series worth to you? What is a World Series worth to this organization? Fans want to win, and I think that is why fans here will always disagree with you. The value premise does not mix well with winning. I’m not saying you don’t want the team to win, but winning does seem to come across as secondary.

    You may have a point, but... by that logic, you think that character trait makes him more likely to sign with a coastal elite big city team? The Twins were not among his no-trade destinations last season, if I’m recalling correctly, while the big cities were.

    I can only think of 29 losers to every free agent signing, 30 if you count the team that actually signed the free agent. And there is actually a good discussion on one of the threads about the Cubs cutting payroll and what a good exchange for Darvish might entail.

    You say the next tier has been brutal, but you were in favor of signing Wheeler. As was I. I presume because you think he can pitch. As do I. So, how do you decide that Wheeler is well worth 5/105, but is not worth 5/125 or 5/135? You gain a great starter, and what does that extra payroll really cost you? How badly does this organization want a deep postseason run?

    Max Scherzer signed a 7/210 contract in January 2015, just a bit outside the date range you chose.

    Ryu is intruiging but I have no idea what he’s worth. Keuchel, no idea. Probably not much. Same with Teheran and Miley. Wheeler signed so quick. I hope the front office did their homework. 5/125 seemed doable for him. That leaves us with Bumgarner. I think my offer in another thread was 3/78, but If he is seeking 9 figures per reports, maybe 5/120 or thereabouts. I don’t know. Bumgarner seems like a steal to me at those prices, for a fierce guy who wants to win, whose mechanics are sound, and has three World Series rings.
