Duffey was pitching fine, his pitches were just a bit out of the strike zone. As weird as that is to say. -

I'd like to hear one of the Twins Daily writers give one good reason why Berrios pitched 6 innings and 91 pitches tonight. EDIT: you could argue the Twins are genuinely not concerned with an innings limit, given how young and strong he is. But gee whiz, leave a little in the tank for him Maybe they'll use him in the bullpen? This team just gets me sometimes.

At this late stage, what are the mechanics for getting Berrios on the 25-man prior to Sept 1st, so that he can cleanly qualify for a possible postseason roster? Can players on the 25-man still be optioned? I am envisioning a situation where Berrios replaces O'Rourke tonight or tomorrow and some third player removed from the 40 man. Like you, I'm not sure what Ryan needs to see in this Berrios start tomorrow night. (Talk about SSS). Hopefully it will be a 2 inning start, followed immediately by a shower and trip to the airport.

True. Not all innings look alike. I think Mike could be right. Link? Foggy memory, but I seem to recall when Johan pitched his no hitter for the Mets, some article showed that pitchers faced most risk when pitch count exceeded something like 130 pitches in a game. Johan needed more pitches than that, and didn't pitch well anytime thereafter, so the narrative became that his no hitter ended his career. I hope that's wrong so that someone will be motivated to correct me, but pretty sure I read that

I approve. IIRC the Nationals used the "hard innings" method on Strasburg the year he came back from TJ, instead of the look feel method, and their postseason ended in disappointment with their best pitcher watching from the bench (TJ is a little bit different beast, I admit). There's no hard inning limit, but you don't want to blow past that 20-30% bench mark with complete disregard, either. I assume the Twins would manage Berrios's innings so that he can pitch as late into the season as is needed. This is tricky, but in a good way!

Pelfrey is an interesting option. You could pitch Pelfrey and hope he is on his game. If not, yank him immediately. Molitor has not been afraid to do that with him. Tim Hudson got the hook in the second inning of Game 7 last fall. Outside the box thinking -

I think you are absolutely right, Charlie Brown. Berrios. Why not? All the current starters give me a queasy feeling in any potential wild card game scenario. Trevor May must also pitch in that game at some point. Another idea would be to start Duffey but if his curve isn't getting swings and misses, pull him out, hopefully while the score is still low. Then bring in Trevor May for several innings if necessary, a la Bumgarner Game 7. -
This is a fascinating question. If you are a manager would you rather have a starter you can use just once every fifth day, and who is going to surrender an unknown number of runs over an unknown number of innings? Or would you rather have a guy who you can use twice in those five days, on days and innings of your choosing, who you are confident will not allow any runs? Yet moving from starter to reliever was clearly a demotion in this case. Half the rotation was in line for a demotion before May, but somehow May made the most sense. Maybe pay Trevor May as a starter but use him as a reliever?

I would bet there is a whole lot of groupthink and consensus opinion that goes into those industry rankings. They are basically accurate but the organizations who rely on them most are not going to have any meaningful advantage. Maybe in some weird way, that does invalidate them. I am thinking of the rankings for the amateur draft here. I'd also bet the Twins knew Duffey had a faster spinning curve than the scouting reports said, and that's why he was promoted somewhat quicker than expected.

I saw the 7th and 8th inning last night (the long delay worked to my benefit ) and I loved how Duffey and Suzuki seemed to call curveball for many consecutive pitches batter after batter. It was working, so why not? No need to "mix in" any other pitches last night when the Orioles are eating out of your hand. Obviously not every game will develop that way but yeah Duffey is fun to watch right now and very glad to know there is some sound science behind his success. He will also throw a fastball inside for a ball, just to shake the batter up a bit. Love it.

I did my own research and according to accuweather it looks like the last weak cell is finally passing through. That information comes with every caveat known to mankind (and crabkind) I also know a half hour ago, the Baltimore Orioles tweeted out a cryptic message suggesting there would be a ballgame at the end of the rainbow. Isn't it funny how certain sportswriters will tweet out things during a game like "Mauer RBI single!" that the whole world knows, but when you need real information during a rain delay, there's nothing.

I don't honestly know how the Twins stack up. I would like to see some hard data at some point. I would bet they are slower promoting pitchers and about average promoting position players. People will mention shortstop as a position of need. Going into 2015 I think the Twins felt shortstop was a position of depth in their organization. Danny Santana would get the opening chance, and maybe Polanco would be ready, and if not, Escobar could fill in. And then there's Nunez, too. Maybe is why they drafted Nick Gordon the high school shortstop over Trea Turner, the college shortstop who's most likely going to be called up this season. I would prefer the Twins just stay the course at shortstop and let Escobar play full time until these other guys take the job by force. But what's the difference if your shortstop developed in college versus the minor league system?

Yes and this could also be said of Pelfrey. He hit 100 pitches and was out of the game in a snap, even though May was our only decent option after him. Are the Twins saving Pelfrey for next year? Was he signalling he wanted to come out of the game? Who knows. Doesn't matter. The truth is, nice guy he may be, Pelfrey doesn't figure to cut it as a starter any more. His K% has dropped to 88 of 89 among all qualified starters. Right behind Buehrle (savvy lefty rubber arm and WS winner) and ahead of only Jeremy Guthrie for the Royals, a team that takes it's bullpen seriously. The paradox of the strikeout seems to be that it's not a big deal for good hitters to strike out (see Sano, Miguel) but having bullpen guys who strike out good hitters is crucial. I don't know if the strikeout is the best indicator for a successful bullpen pitcher, but it's got to be better than whatever the Twins are using. Doing a rough query on Fangraphs, I find 225 relievers who have pitched at least 20 innings this season. Here are where the Twins relievers are, ranked by K% on that list of 225: 115. Perkins 147. Jepsen 158. Pressly 160. Graham 206. Fien 219. Thompson 220. Boyer 222. Duensing Out of 225. Our best guy isn't even in the top half. Come on, people!

Jepsen had a good inning. That's it. Fien had a good stat line. Gibson did not pitch inside all might (that I saw). That's on everyone, including the catcher and coaches.
