  1. I took a look at what's different for Clemens offensively. He's significantly dropped his strikeout rate and doubled his walk rate - to the point where it looks like he's traded off strikeouts for walks. That's huge. His performance vs breaking balls is drastically improved year-on-year: a .146 xWOBA last year and .480 this season. He's definitely figured out how to hit sweepers. I don't know if he will see another sweeper for a month. He's hitting the ball harder when he barrels the ball and barreling more often. He's chasing pitches less often and jumping on the first pitch more often. He's pulling the ball less often and going up the middle more often (though he still rarely goes opposite field).
  2. How about we worry about things that have actually happened rather than hypotheticals. I can "what if" a hundred scenarios that could change the roster.
  3. He's been pretty good defensively. Even if he regresses to his career 82 OPS+ offense, he's a better choice at 2B than Julien. He's going to be streaky, contributing mainly when he hits a HR. That's a guy worth having on the MLB roster.
  4. Buxton CF, Wallner RF/DH, Larnach DH/RF, Clemens 2B. It comes down to Castro vs Bader. I agree that Bader's glove makes up any difference on offense. FWIW - Castro has better splits against LHP than RHP this season.
  5. It doesn't take 90 wins to make the playoffs. The new playoff structure levels the playing field significantly. The difference in odds between a 95 win team and an 85 win team in a playoff game is negligible. We're talking about a 55% chance of winning each individual game for the 95 win team.
  6. I tend to rank on upside, so I'd go with Hill, Soto, Prielipp, Morris. Morris looks like a 5th starter or middle reliever. Prielipp looks like an excellent reliever, but I doubt his arm survives 160-180 innings a season as a starter. Soto and Hill have top of the rotation upside but are a long way off.
  7. I don't know if Julien can make the adjustments he needs at AAA. His problem is he can't hit breaking balls at the edge of the zone. In AAA, not enough players can spot their breaking ball at the edge of the zone.
  8. Raya should be sent to the bullpen. Has there ever been anything good to say about him? He's a 30-year-old pitcher at AAA with a terrible ERA and a bad K/BB ratio. He might make a good TV color analyst someday.
  9. I would much rather see them burn out the bullpen trying to maximize the long-term success of the starting pitchers than have them burn out starting pitchers trying to save the bullpen. Starters are really hard to find but relievers aren't.
  10. Correct. If you want that kind of production, you can get Ty France for $1M.
  11. There is a huge difference between an "undeniable advantage" and a "mockery of competitive balance that MLB doesn't care about". If spending like the Dodgers truly was a "mockery of competitive balance" they'd be winning 75-80% of their games.
  12. I get that Eeles is an interesting story because he's short and was undrafted but stories don't win baseball games. Both Ryan Fitzgerald and Will Holland have been hitting better than Eeles and both of them have better defensive reputations. The Twins have a ton of options at 2B - Castro, Lee, Clemens are in the majors, Julien, Fitzgerald, Keaschall, Gasper and Austin Martin are on the 40 man roster. The last thing they need to do is add another 2B to the 40-man.
  13. That must explain why the Red Sox are running away with their division and, wait, they're actually in 4th place with a losing record. Well, certainly the Yankees and Dodgers must have the best records in MLB, wait, that's the Tigers.
  14. The best July deals are nothing prospects for veteran role players and relievers. Teams will sell those kinds of guys just because they want to open up a spot for a rookie.
  15. The #1 organizational need is still a catcher to replace Vazquez next season. That's not really something people shop for at the July trade deadline. They have enough depth and no gaping holes, though an injury between now and the deadline could change that assessment. They are unlikely to bring in a superstar due to the high price tag. It still might make some sense to make a trade to re-shape the roster. Miranda and Julien aren't helping them but could help another team. McCusker and Eeles aren't likely to get a shot in Minnesota but someone else could be interested. Another reliever with options could be useful.
  16. I believe he gets a pay bump no matter what level he plays at now that he's played at AAA.
  17. Nearly all of his appearances are when there is leverage. If he has a bad game (and almost everyone does) it will appear when the game situation is close because he only pitches when the game is close. They don't bring Jax in the game if they have a 5 run lead or trail by 5. He only appears during clutch situations.
  18. Miranda has been trending upwards (.364/.391/.682 in the last week). Julien, unfortunately, has not.
