  1. Oliveros turns 27 this year which makes him far too old to be considered a prospect. He can't make the team despite a weak bullpen and is now AAA depth.
  2. This must mean they're not thrilled with Gilmartin
  3. Yes, Terry Ryan said the exact same thing last year. He's full of it.
  4. I don't think people realize the bar for good performance in a bullpen pitcher. Putting up a 4 ERA is not impressive.
  5. This may come off as snarky but sometimes talks on a multimillion dollar contract take more than two days.
  6. Interesting to see a major league umpire essentially say that they can't tell where the ball crosses the plate and have to rely on the catcher to make a call.
  7. Buxton - you don't need to suck up to Mauer to get the job.
  8. Then Arcia gets the boot. Sano would be fine in RF.
  9. Great article. I appreciate the effort and the presentation. It is interesting trying to synthesize what I've read about Suzuki's pitch framing and why it doesn't match perception. From what I've read he's bad at framing the low strike. He's also the top catcher at blocking pitches in the dirt and those are probably interrelated. The low strike that Suzuki is not getting called has only recently been called due to video umpire feedback. When Suzuki was being instructed on catching he was probably told that was a ball and the most important thing was to make sure it was caught. He may be able to alter his approach with the right coaching.
  10. About getting ready - most starters have 4 pitches they need. If Pelfrey is in the bullpen he'll probably pare down the repertoire and should be able to get ready faster.
  11. Sorry, that's the following offseason. This offseason is even worse Joaquin Arias (31) Mike Aviles (35) Gordon Beckham (29) Willie Bloomquist (38) Kevin Frandsen (34) David Freese (33) Jonathan Herrera (31) Maicer Izturis (35) – $3MM club option with a $1MM buyout Don Kelly (36) Jeff Keppinger (36) Casey McGehee (32) Aramis Ramirez (38) *retiring* Sean Rodriguez (31) Juan Uribe (37)
  12. MLB Trade Rumors look at upcoming free agents Third Basemen Adrian Beltre (38) Daniel Descalso (30) Martin Prado (33) Justin Turner (32) Luis Valbuena (31) --------- Prado and Beltre will be in demand at the deadline if the Marlins and Rangers are out of it. Valbuena might be dropped for Bryant too. Plouffe will have a bunch of interest this offseason after those two sign. None of those guys are the kind of player you want to lock up multiyear at their talent level and age.
  13. I'm so tired of Spring Training auditions. Spring Training is a terrible time to judge ballplayers. Hicks has flopped twice out of the gate but "won" the job in Spring Training.
  14. Sano has been compared to Miguel Cabrera since he was 16. Cabrera came up and played RF because Mike Lowell was established at 3B. Eventually Lowell was traded and Cabrera went to 3B. Then when Cabrera was traded to Detroit he moved to 1B. Sano could follow the same path, hopefully without the trade to Detroit.
  15. Would trade Kohl Stewart for an ace (Hamels) now. Like others have said there is a lot of hype and not a lot of results yet.
  16. "Torii will be worth his weight in gold just for the help he'll give to others and the tickets that will sell to come see him." He weighs about 225 pounds. At $1200 an ounce that's $4.32M for Torii. Too bad they're paying him $10M.
  17. Burdi above Kolek is a surprise
  18. "Hart is the President of Baseball Operations" This is simply title inflation. They could call him the Grand Poobah of Baseball Decisions but he'd be doing a GM job
  19. Aaron before Ruth alphabetically, by birthday and on the HR list
  20. They're less than one standard deviation below average over a small sample
  21. Over the same time period Josmil Pinto - signed 2006 Oswaldo Arcia - signed 2007 Danny Santana - signed 2007 Miguel Sano - signed 2009 Jorge Polanco - signed 2009 Max Kepler - signed 2009 Kennys Vargas - signed 2009
  22. Sometimes I wonder if we're expecting too much from the MLB draft. A large plurality of MLB players are international signs. You can do a great job with player development by scouting well internationally and miss on all of your draft picks.
  23. Joe Mauer is a threadjack here. Notice that Rosario and May don't make the top 10. There is a lot of talent.
  24. They need to use some of these C+/C prospects in trades as they are loaded with them. They can't all make it on the roster so they might as well try to get something of value for them.
  25. They gave Kurt Suzuki a reasonable raise also.
