  1. No more bad gloves. I'd rather see Colby Rasmus, a guy who can field but a streaky bat, than another out of place DH.
  2. Why would any pitcher agree to a 3 year deal with a 90+ loss team? A pitcher agreeing to give up years is going to want to go to a contender.
  3. I agree with the poster that mentioned the bullpen. The Twins bullpen may not look like the problem now but they're below average, aging and trending in the wrong direction. Overhauling the bullpen should be an offseason priority.
  4. I like the idea of Jake Peavy on a 1 year Jack Morris type deal. I like Brandon McCarthy on a 3 year deal. There will be some decent pitching available in the 2nd tier.
  5. Stewart pitched 87 innings in 19 games. Thorpe threw 71 innings in 16 games. Both averaged less than 5 innings per start. There are legion ball pitchers who throw more than that. Yet both pitchers ended the year hurt. I wonder if we will ever understand how to keep a pitcher healthy.
  6. Johnson or Darnell might make the team as a long reliever but they're a far cry from mediocre starting pitchers. Handedness doesn't matter at all if the pitcher is effective. I do agree that there is no reason to sign another low-end innings eater like Correia or Pelfrey. I'm not sure there was ever a reason to do that. May has not earned a job yet in my opinion. I think there will be one spot for Meyer or May.
  7. In a park that suppresses HR like Target Field a good OF defense is a must. No more DH types in the outfield.
  8. The younger guy. Performance when the pitchers were rookies is irrelevant to me. I don't like betting on any 36 or 37 year old pitcher three years from now. Very few pitchers have been worth a darn at age 37, let alone worth $16M. Radke and Santana didn't pitch after age 33. Cliff Lee is 35 and injured. Roy Halladay made it to 35. Roy Oswalt was awesome at 31 and 32 but cooked at 35. Bret Saberhagen pitched 15 innings after the age of 35. CC Sabathia is falling apart at 33. Bartolo Colon struggled from ages 33-36 before somehow coming back at 38. David Cone made it to 36 and he's borderline HoF. There are very few counterexamples and they're nearly all HoF caliber pitchers - Kevin Brown, Tim Hudson, Maddux, Glavine, etc. Mark Buehrle could be another. Do you think 3 years of Shields is worth $25M more to the Twins than 3 years of Ervin Santana? That's all I think you'll get from either pitcher. That's at least 4 WAR over 3 seasons.
  9. Does it concern anyone that Thorpe and Stewart were both used about as lightly as you can use a starting pitcher and they both ended the season injured?
  10. Ervin Santana FIP over the last 2 years is about 3.60 over 390IP. Shields FIP over the last two years is about 3.50 over 450 IP. The big difference is innings. That "one year younger" matters a lot, especially since the proposed Shields contract is a year longer. It's Santana ages 32-35 versus Shields ages 33-37. I wouldn't want to eat the last two years of that deal. I think both pitchers are likely to provide 3 good years over their respective deals and I'd rather pay $56M for three good years than $80M.
  11. Garver bats RH. I'd still put Turner ahead of him but it's close.
  12. Of those options I like the Ervin Santana contract the most. He's younger than Shields, more likely to be good through all four years and much less costly for approximately the same production. That isn't much more than they gave Nolasco and Santana is actually good. They would be fine with Hughes and Santana at the top of the rotation. Scherzer and Lester are looking at HoF pitcher money and I don't think they're that good. Shields is declining and his numbers are being held up by the very good Royals defense.
  13. The correct answer is "old". Fien, Burton and Duensing are all on the wrong side of 30. They need to get younger and more effective this offseason.
  14. Which fans, the ones who boo Mauer or the ones who threw hot dogs at Knoblauch?
  15. I think MLB expands benefits with 60 days service time. If the Twins get him those benefits he can probably afford to go into coaching in the low minors.
  16. Why not Stephen Pryor? 7.1 BB/9, that's why.
  17. Depends on whether he costs a pick or not
  18. Bringing up Polanco edges him closer to Super 2. You never need worry about that with Bernier.
  19. I think the Twins should trade him for a starting pitcher. That's what they did with Ben Revere and Sam Fuld after all!
  20. I've been shocked before but I don't see Ervin Santana going from 2014 where nobody would give up a first round pick to get him to 2015 where he makes $100M on a 5 year deal.
  21. If Schafer can improve his bunting as a Twin he could be quite valuable in certain situations. I haven't really seen anyone improve their bunting as a Twin though.
  22. There is not much hope in this list of hopefuls. Old players who aren't stars in AAA.
  23. I think they can get Ervin Santana for $12M to $15M a season and I like him better than Shields.
  24. Plouffe will only "remain" at 3B for 3 more seasons, then he'll be gone. Sano doesn't have to stick past age 30, just fill the gap in the near term. By "blown away" I'm assuming you would agree that if Terry Ryan can find another starting pitching prospect with the pedigree of Alex Meyer that it would be a sufficient return for Plouffe.
