  1. I am pretty much counting the Twins out in 2015. If they get to .500 that will be a huge improvement and that's still a long way from contention. Their next shot at contention is when Sano and Buxton are in the big leagues. Put it another way, I'm pretty sure trading Trevor Plouffe isn't going to be the only reason they don't win the division next season.
  2. It all comes down the the Twins evaluation of Sano. If they're confident he can play 3B adequately then they should shop Plouffe. If they aren't then Plouffe sticks around another year and Sano fights for playing time with Mauer, Vargas and Arcia. I think they'll have more suitors in the offseason than at next season's trade deadline. Trade deadline deals are typically for impending free agents. I don't think a utility role for Plouffe makes sense for reasons hinted at above. It is harder to learn 4 positions and play them well than to learn one position. Plouffe has shown he can handle 3B and be an adequate starter. Someone will value that higher than a utility guy at the corners. Turning Plouffe into a utility guy damages his value if it hurts his 3B defense. Unlike CF where the Twins had no acceptable backup plan when they dealt Revere and Span they do have decent stopgaps in Escobar and Nunez and an additional backup in Deibinson Romero.
  3. Except the third best 3B prospect in baseball - Miguel Sano - and stopgaps in Nunez and Escobar. Besides those three guys they're pretty bare I guess.
  4. "It might be more prudent for the the Twins to hold on to Plouffe until Sano forces his way to the majors." Plouffe's trade value can really only go down from here on out. He can get hurt, he can get more expensive through arbitration and he can provide fewer years of team control. I think it's time to move him like they moved Denard Span. Escobar and Nunez can cover 3B for the short term (frees up SS for Santana) with Sano nearly ready. Branch Rickey always said better a year too early than a year too late. Sano is not a lock but he's about as safe of a bet as you will ever see for a prospect. He has the pedigree and has had some success at AA. I hope the Twins are as tired of lousy defense in LF as I am. They need someone with speed who can catch the ball to help the pitching staff. That's not Miguel Sano.
  5. I agree with Hicks, Pinto, Hermann, Tonkin and Oliveros. Probably Florimon just because he's on the roster and he is a better defender than anyone they have. Beresford and Bernier don't do anything that they can't do already so they are quite unlikely. Colabello is unlikely as all he would do is RH pinch hit about 5 times max. Johnson and Darnell are less likely than Pino who is probably a lock. "Rob Antony said that generally six is the targeted number... A catcher, an infielder, an outfielder and three pitchers. My sense is they'll be closer to eight."
  6. Every starter except groundballer Kyle Gibson is underperforming FIP by a run or more. The team FIP of 3.89 is right in the middle of the pack. The obvious place to upgrade is CF and LF which are relatively large in Target Field compared to the rest of the league. Kansas City is leading the division because their outfield defense is awesome. I don't think Shields is better than Phil Hughes but you wouldn't tell by their ERA+. The Twins infield defense is worse after Florimon was demoted; Dozier's numbers dropped after the move almost as much as they dropped at SS. However, I think Escobar is just fine and Florimon can't hit.
  7. Just like they've stated that they don't carry money over, the Twins also don't front-load free agent contracts so I guess it's futile to argue that they should do either one.
  8. I doubt Melky Cabrera gets more than a 3 year deal anyway. He's already had a 50 game suspension for steroids and his next one will be 100 games. I also don't trust the Twins medical staff to keep a guy with his medical history healthy.
  9. According to the SABR defensive ratings Mauer is an above average 1B. Vargas has not looked good at 1B and the scouting reports agree.
  10. In a world without a salary cap there is no reason to front load a contract due to the time value of money.
  11. The Twins need to add more defense in the outfield. The infield is doing alright, although Danny Santana will probably grade out as a minus at SS. They have several flyball pitchers (Milone, Hughes, May) who will perform much better with a good outfield defense.
  12. Because it is a defensive downgrade at two positions. Mauer would be a minus at LF and Vargas a minus at 1B. Mauer is a plus at 1B and Vargas is best suited to DH.
  13. Kurt Suzuki in August .238/.294/.349/.643 The guy is too old to ride him this hard.
  14. I'd rather see them trade for an expensive outfielder than sign one of the free agent options. The Dodgers and Red Sox are loaded with expensive outfielders (ex Andre Ethier, Shane Victorino). Alex Rios is another option for a short-term fix. None of those guys would cost much in trade.
  15. So the plan is another 90 losses and swelling the Pohlad bank accounts? This team has $40MM in payroll space for 2015. Buy a real LF.
  16. My guess is Shane Victorino is going to get dumped with the Red Sox picking up salary. I'd take him for a year.
  17. The Twins could be bottom feeders here and try to grab Victorino on the cheap. The Red Sox have too many outfielders.
  18. I agree. I wouldn't bench any starter unless they're hurt. If the financial incentive is the issue the Twins could just give Suzuki the money anyway. They need him in April 2015, not September 2014.
  19. The Twins should be shutting down Suzuki in September. They need to keep him healthy for the next two seasons and he's on a pretty rigorous pace for games caught. Let Pinto catch over half the games and save the veteran for next April.
  20. I like trading Ricky Nolasco for Andre Ethier. The Dodgers are loaded in the outfield but their pitching staff will have holes. Ricky wants to be a Dodger anyway.
  21. If Sano does not come through the Twins are not going to be a contender. He's also very low risk of being a failure. Are they building a contender or a .500 ballclub? Plouffe may be at least league average but he's also at best league average. Better a year too early than a year too late.
  22. I agree that Jordan Schafer is exactly the type of player who needs to learn how to bunt. A fast bench player who can bunt is going to get PH opportunities.
  23. The infielder to "sell high" on is Trevor Plouffe. He has 3 arbitration years remaining and is coming off his best year as a defender. I think he's reached his peak and projects as an average 3B for the remainder of his arbitration years. Average performance has value and Plouffe should be of interest to about half the teams in the league. The Twins can patch together 3B with Escobar and Nunez until Miguel Sano is ready and give SS to Danny Santana.
  24. He might get a September callup but I'm pretty sure he's getting cut this winter. There are a lot of adds and Colabello should pass through waivers.
  25. Jim Thome said he's interested in managing some day.
