  1. Looked up Brendan Ryan and even he had a 725 OPS in the minors. Vielma would probably repeat A+ if they didn't have to move Gordon up.
  2. RH relievers on the Twins with a K/9 better than Jepsen <blank>
  3. How does Gonsalves miss out on top pitcher? I guess 8 shutout is better than 5.
  4. If he can hit low and away with authority then it's hard to get him out
  5. Troubling note about ABW strikeout rate increasing in July in today's Pioneer Press.
  6. I'd be interested in trading established major leaguers for Tulowitzki (Ervin Santana, Tommy Milone and Trevor Plouffe?) but young talent not so much. Maybe they would bite on a quantity-over-quality package of Danny Santana, Adam Brett Walker, Alex Meyer and Kohl Stewart but unlikely.
  7. Farris will probably not play in the big leagues for anyone. Ortiz might get a shot with a different organization or Japan but also unlikely.
  8. The best option this offseason for catcher might be a free agent. Matt Wieters is not going to cost a ton.
  9. Nunez is having a "bench bat" type of season. I'm not sure why he's been overlooked.
  10. The Twins don't bat their best hitter 3rd, they bat Mauer there...
  11. "Chih-Wei Hu pitched six one-run innings" I read this as Hu giving up a run every inning for six innings. Had to read it twice.
  12. Ervin Santana is not eligible for the playoffs. That has to be May
  13. I actually like Brayan Pena as an option. He hits RHP pretty well (.310/.373/.359/.731 in 2015), isn't considered a poor defender and is dirt cheap for salary on an expiring contract. That's a fine option to pair with Suzuki.
  14. OTOH - if he hasn't mastered it at AA (and he hasn't) why would you bump him up to the next level?
  15. Buxton is injured and will certainly need a rehab stint. Don't expect him until September.
  16. Nunez has an 800 OPS this season. It will be hard for Arcia to top that. The Twins could go with two different semi-platoons in the outfield if they send back Santana and make Escobar the everyday SS. LF Rosario/Robinson CF Hicks (who platoons with himself) RF Hunter/Arcia They all bring different skill sets depending on defense, platoon advantage, contact v power, etc. I don't think the Twins are quite ready to bring up Arcia only to sit him on the bench most of the time. In September they'll be willing to do that. With the current roster you pretty much have to sit a prospect (Santana, Arcia, Rosario) in order to put together the best bench.
  17. Good thing Johan Santana didn't follow that advice. Changing speeds gets batters out.

I was attempting to debunk the idea that Mauer was moved out from behind the plate because the concussion risk could be a long-term health issue (think of his children!) and not because it is a playing time risk. Another concussion could cause a long DL stint with a slow recovery and diminished productivity. So could another knee injury. The Twins are balancing risk here and trying to get as much baseball out of Joe Mauer as possible. They aren't worried about his long-term health or they would have told him to retire.

The discussion was about risk and how putting Mauer back at catcher would cause such extreme risk to his future health that it should never happen. I think the back and knee injuries also contribute to reasons why Mauer shouldn't catch anymore. A catcher has about a 10x increase in risk of concussion compared to a first baseman based on the rates C are put on the concussion DL compared to other players. If putting Mauer behind the plate means he is in mortal danger because of a possible concussion, then he obviously shouldn't play baseball at all. Reducing risk by 10x isn't enough to justify continuing to play. Clearly his long term health is not the issue or he never would have received clearance to play 1B. Playing Mauer at 1B instead of C is about making sure he is playing baseball and not sitting on the DL for extended periods of time. Reducing his DL time by a factor of 10 is HUGE for the Twins. That's not just the concussion risk. It is also the knee injuries (bilateral leg weakness), the back injuries and his increasing age. Sorry to veer so far off topic but I can't let nonsense go by without a comment. Aaron Hicks has looked great lately and I expect him to continue to improve.

You're the one arguing that playing baseball is more dangerous than getting into a car accident. That just isn't true and there are mountains of data to back that up.

And none of them killed you
  22. Hard in, soft away is the mantra. A changeup followed by a fastball down and away works for the same reason anything works down and away - it's the farthest away from the batter's eye so it is harder to make solid contact.
  23. Mike Pelfrey to the Blue Jays for Dioner Navarro makes sense for both sides. The money is even the same.

    Hicks

I think the walks will come back. Pitchers will challenge Hicks until he proves he can hit the ball.
