    I would look at highly compensated starting pitchers who underperformed in 2021: Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Miles Mikolas, Garrett Richards. Then there are the players looking at large arbitration awards: Matt Boyd, Chris Bassitt, Sean Manea, Zach Eflin, Kyle Freeland, Jameson Taillon

    I think you can probably rule out anyone who would require draft pick compensation. The Twins have some high picks in what should be a loaded draft. That makes Gausman and Stroman more attractive. OTOH - Ray, Syndergaard, Kershaw, Rodon, Desclafini and Gray might be less attractive or off the market due to the QO. Greinke is unlikely. He's always had the Twins on his no-trade list.

    Both Atlanta and San Diego would be interested in Garver. Seattle might also want him.

    Hitting. Garver had the 3rd highest wOBA of all major league catchers behind Grandal and Posey. His glove is average, too. He's an All-Star catcher if he's healthy.

    Why not add Yu Darvish to the list? I'm sure he's available by trade from San Diego as they try to reshape their roster to contend next season.

    They should use that slogan to sell season tickets. "Come watch us in 2022. We should be in the conversation in July to be over .500!" I wasn't kidding when I said they should just let Mike Veeck be the GM.

    1 game over .500 is not competitive. There are no 3rd place AL Central pennants.

    I think the Marlins would be more interested in Jeffers than Garver. Atlanta and San Diego might have interest in Garver.

    6th best OPS+ in the American League - better than the Yankees or A's. Offensive production has not been the problem.

    I don't think they need to eat any money. Donaldson's remaining contract is essentially 3 years $58M. That is very tradeable for a 3-4 WAR player.

    In 5 seasons for this front office the best free agent pitcher they have added is Michael Pineda. He's missed a season and a half due to injuries and suspension and he's still the best free agent pitcher they have added in 5 seasons. I really hope he's not the best free agent pitcher they acquire in the upcoming offseason.

    When Garver was the same age as Jeffers he had a 688 OPS in Fort Myers. Jeffers is WAY ahead of Garver at the same age.

    That is a very rosy take on a very inexperienced starting rotation and a mediocre bullpen. Even with that optimism you're just adding two top line starters and two top line relievers instead of my plan of adding three of each. Adding those players as free agents is still going to cost $65M in payroll. This pitching staff is really bad, only better than the Orioles in the American League. In 5 seasons for this front office the best free agent pitcher they have added is Michael Pineda.

    Sure. I bet they can win 80 games if everything goes right. That's a 10% improvement. The other assets (Rogers, Garver, Buxton) that could have been traded at the deadline were all injured. The pitching staff has five pitchers returning with a WAR > 0.5. Bailey Ober is currently the staff ace. They need to add 3 starting pitchers as good as Berrios and three relievers as good as Rogers if they actually want to win a playoff series. That's more than a couple solid additions, that's a complete overhaul. To get pitchers as good as Berrios in trade will cost at least as much as they got for Berrios. Signing three starting pitchers that good in free agency will add $75M to the payroll. 2022 is a rebuilding year. If it that didn't happen after trading Berrios it certainly happened when they lost Maeda for the season.

    That is a terrible idea. The Twins would be much better off trading Garver to a team that wants him behind the plate than they would be using Garver as their full time DH. He's still an average defender at catcher. As a DH he loses half his value.

    They did trade more than Berrios. They traded Cruz, Happ and Robles. They should have traded Pineda. Buxton, Garver and Rogers were all injured at the trade deadline.

    The Twins are pretty obviously rebuilding in 2022 or they wouldn't have traded Berrios. That means trading the older, more expensive player (Garver) as they look toward competing in 2023. Garver will be 32 in 2023. The 2022 catcher free agent market is not good. A contending team will want Garver's bat at catcher.

    If you want to contend you want (or most likely already have) someone better than Sano. In the offseason you can usually find someone just as good for a lot less money. The only hope of a trade is for another equal player at a different position. I don't see an equal shortstop on another team with a $10M contract so a trade is unlikely.

    Jordan Gore is showing a lot of potential for such a late conversion to pitching. He might end up on the 40 man roster.
