    I'd actually argue the opposite. They should bring in a bunch of the leftovers on the free agent market on minor league contracts. Volatility also means that sometimes those pitchers figure it out and get better. Low risk, high reward. You can never have enough pitching.

    When they traded Berrios the Twins punted on 2022. Rogers is a free agent after 2022. There is no practical difference between winning 75 games and winning 68 games in 2022. Trading Taylor Rogers could make the organization better in the long run at the expense of a few wins in 2022. Same goes for Duffey and Thielbar.

    It's not really to free up cash. It's recognizing that there aren't going to be very many leads to protect if they don't get any starting pitching. What's the point of a closer if all the games are over before inning 6? Ultimately it's the fact that he's currently injured that is likely to keep Rogers with the Twins to start next season.

    Non-tender is unlikely but trading Taylor Rogers is a strong possibility. A closer who makes $8-9 million is a luxury on a team that doesn't have a #1 or #2 starter on the roster.

    I think Celestino's stats at St. Paul are quite promising. Don't forget that he's younger than Jose Miranda.

    The tidbit on Bechtold was interesting. If he can catch he's a prospect.

    Looking for a reclamation project? Kohei Arihara was designated for assignment. He is 29, only costs $2.5M for next season and has a long track record of success in Japan. I'd rather see him get a few starts before the season ends than Andrew Albers or Nick Vincent. He could also be relief conversion project this offseason.

    He reminds me a lot of Shannon Stewart - LF who gets on base all the damned time.

    I often get frustrated with the discussion here. The Twins need to get good players, not just get a bargain price for a player. It reminds me of my Scandinavian farmer relatives. They love to go to auctions and get "good deals". Then they end up with two sheds filled with junk nobody else wants. One of them is building a new shed to store some more of these auction treasures. This team has the resources to run a $150M payroll. They play in one of the easiest divisions in baseball. Do they want to win in the playoffs or try to be the cheapest 85 win team in the major leagues? Do the fans want to see a team that wins a playoff series or a team that contends for the Wild Card until the end of September as long as nobody is a big showoff making lots of money? They desperately need a shortstop and the free agent market is full of them.

    A 750 OPS is roughly a 110 OPS+. The Twins would be THRILLED to have that production at SS right now. Coupled with his above average defense you get a a 3 WAR SS (and you're being intentionally pessimistic).

    Story only wants 4 years at $20M each? Yes, please. That's a bargain basement price for a 28 year old who has played like an All-Star 3 of the past 4 seasons.

    I can and do often. I don't play the lottery but I'll buy a beverage if I'm thirsty.

    I think the Twins still believe in Royce Lewis as the starter for several years but probably want to get him some time in AAA next season since he's coming back from a lost season. There is a cheap, glove-first SS option who will be available as a free agent. Freddy Galvis has been as productive as Simmons with a much smaller paycheck.

    Sometimes, but not often, you win when you buy a lottery ticket. The Yankees won on this scratcher.

    If you cherry pick your first baseman's best 75 game stretch and he still only has an 800 OPS while playing awful defense he's probably not that great.

    Luke Farrell is underrated. I'll bet most people couldn't tell you he is on the roster but he's been effective in the bullpen which is more than you can say about most of their relievers. Just a few days ago I was pretty sure he would get released but now I think they might keep him around for another season.

    I think Josh Donaldson is underrated. He gets endless grief from fans because he makes money but he's one of the few players earning his paycheck this season.

    Pineda is one of the pitchers the Twins must replace with a better option if they want to contend. Does anyone want to see Pineda starting a playoff game?

    He's using an unusual fastball delivery to get good results. Eventually big league hitters will adjust and he'll need to use his secondary pitches.

    The "he hasn't made an error at SS" argument is pretty ridiculous. He's been a below average fielder at 2B and 3B. What about that makes you think he'd be a good option at SS? Nick Gordon is one of the players they need to replace if they want to contend.

    What else are they going to spend money on? Starting pitching is their biggest need. They're probably not going to sign a shortstop to a big contract with Royce Lewis in the minors. The rest of the lineup is average or better at their position. The pitching staff has one pitcher with a WAR above 0.8 - Bailey Ober. They need as many as 10 pitchers on the 40 man roster to be replaced with better talent to contend. Of course they need to obtain some of that pitching through free agency.

    I think they need to move on from Sano and move Donaldson to 1B.
