  1. I don't know how you "change your approach" to the fact that pitch velocity is up to it's highest peak ever. There is a never-ending supply of relievers throwing in the high 90s with a slider that spins like crazy.
  2. The Twins are not a good offensive team but they are far from the worst. There are 9 teams with fewer runs per game than the Twins (including all of the other teams in their division). The only thing keeping them from dropping even lower in runs per game is the fact that they can put the ball over the fence. It would be a lot worse if they were striking out this much but only hitting singles.
  3. Sorry to disappoint you but MLB batting average has gone up just slightly from .243 in 2022 to .248 in 2023. That's a far cry from when the league hit .268 way back in 2007 (which includes pitchers hitting). Strikeouts are up 2022->23 from 8.4 per team per game to 8.6. The .706 league OPS from 2022 has increased to .729. Overall offense has barely budged back to 2021 levels. Without the offseason changes to increase offense I'm pretty sure we would be >9Ks per team per game with league batting average below .240.
  4. Everyone wants to bring up Wallner but Larnach hits just as well and plays a lot better defense.
  5. Pitching with runners on means the pitcher no longer uses the windup but pitches out of the stretch. That can definitely have an impact on effectiveness (otherwise they wouldn't ever pitch out of the windup). Of course that isn't a mental block issue at all, but a physical ability issue.
  6. Regi Grace will be Rule 5 draft eligible in December. He's exactly the kind of player you trade for deadline help because someone will pick him in the draft if not protected.
  7. The problem with this philosophy is every team is unlikely to win the World Series in any given year. Even the odds-on favorite Braves and Rays have less than a 20% chance to win it all. Therefore, the Twins should always tank to get better draft positioning and never try to win. Playoff games are 1) fun 2) profitable. They should definitely be trying to make the playoffs this season.
  8. He's also eating a ton of innings, on pace for over 190 innings pitched this season. By FIP he's been as good as Joe Ryan.
  9. I think the answer is no and it isn't surprising. The roster is 50% pitchers. They've been drafting roughly 50% pitchers but that isn't enough because pitchers get hurt and flame out at a much higher rate than position players. They've acquired almost no pitching through international free agency which puts them well behind league average. That leaves free agency and trading veteran players as the only way to acquire the young pitching talent they need. They have never been comfortable paying for free agent pitchers (I don't blame them) and they've been in contention often enough lately to hold onto their veteran players.
  10. It's funny that the Twins scored their one run because the Braves threw a fastball in the strikezone to Gallo instead of reading the scouting report that says "only changeups in the zone".
  11. I think that is one thing they're really not good at. It's one thing to come up with a plan but they have to recognize when the plan isn't working and adjust. They're really slow making adjustments. Alex Colome as the closer is just one example.
  12. Royce has also commented publicly that he's getting his pitch far more often than he expected. He probably shouldn't have said that out loud but I'm fine with him swinging while he's getting his pitch. Sooner or later the opposition will adjust and he'll have to work harder and take more walks.
  13. Povich still looks pretty good. He's #11 on the Orioles prospect list. I agree that getting rid of Cano was more about freeing up the roster spot than it was giving the Orioles the trade headliner.
  14. They need to protect Martin, Salas and Rodriguez. I think they will want to add Urbina but he might be able to wait another year. Enlow is a possible add. That gives them max 2 spots for everyone else.
  15. The list is Camargo, Bechtold, Severino, Prato, Williams, Laweryson, Funderburk, Schulfer, Scherff, Kiersey, Soularie, Peguero, Grace & Hidalgo. I don't know if they want to protect any of those guys.
  16. They have some minor leaguers who they probably won't protect next December that other teams may be interested in. If they don't shop those players at the trade deadline the alternative is giving them away for nothing.
  17. It's not really a slump - it's a complete inability to hit changeups. They are feeding him a steady diet of changeups, he knows they are coming and he can't hit them. I think he has been getting a little unlucky with the looking strikeouts - some should have been walks - but right now he is completely neutralized by even mediocre changeups. Dan Gladden said in the radio broadcast with the gist of "If I was a pitcher facing Gallo and I didn't have a changeup I'd come up with one in a hurry."
  18. This team is not one player away from a championship. They should be shopping the clearance aisle, not the window display.
  19. The Lopez trade might be the worst. At least Mahle threw the ball decent in his few healthy starts. Lopez has been terrible. Do NOT give up anything valuable for a relief pitcher. Trade #7 was a nothing-for-nothing deal that matters about as much as picking up a DFA pitcher.
  20. Are you talking about the same guy who couldn't run to first base without injuring himself last evening?
  21. They're going to "eat" this contract whether they are playing him or not. It's a sunk cost. I try not to be too harsh on Gallo. He was quite useful in April playing well at 1B and at the plate. He is a capable defender at 1B and the corner OF positions and he can hit the ball a ton when he connects. There is a role for that on many teams including the Twins. The problem is the Twins have too many players like Gallo on offense. It is pretty disheartening that the Twins have spent $35M on Gallo, Kepler and Buxton and they're not getting much production out of any of them.
  22. I am really glad Cutch didn't sign with the Twins and is having a great season in Pittsburgh. It's like when Torii Hunter came back to the Twins.
  23. Lots of times last night when the Twins picked the wrong pitch to swing at - letting hittable pitches go in favor of swinging at unhittable pitches. I think their game plan at the plate was not prepared for how the Tigers were pitching. Tigers management has stolen several games against the Twins this year and they have their team playing well above expectations.
  24. Julien looks completely lost at second base and Correa looks frustrated trying to teach the rookie what to do in real time. He's giving back on defense everything he provides on offense. I agree, play Farmer at 2B. When they send Julien back to the minors give him a first baseman's glove. It's going to take years of additional reps at second base to make him playable and even then he won't be good.
  25. Yes, let's wait another month for the team to make the obvious decision.
