  1. They don't have any interest in Chapman. Royce Lewis is their 3B.
  2. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/23041/attrition-by-position-how-long-do-players-at-each-position-last/ blogs.fangraphs.com A Look At How Recent Great Second Basemen Have Aged (Pt. 1) (startspreadingthenews.blog) Polanco, at age 30, is right on the cusp of expected decline. His defense has already been slowly eroding. Seattle is going to try to squeeze out his last good years but he's unlikely to get better or healthier at ages 30-31.
  3. Miranda needs to go to AAA regardless. He was bad in AAA and needs to show he can be good in AAA before he gets another promotion. No scholarships for the young players.
  4. History shows most second basemen in their thirties are injury prone.
  5. Yes, but they're doing it cheaply which is the most important thing for ownership.
  6. The Mariners have one what-if (Polanco's health). The Twins have 4 of them. The Twins hedged their risk pretty well. It's unlikely the worst-case scenario unfolds for all four players (though it does happen). $8M cash can't win games but it can't slump either.
  7. Giolito was horrible in 2023 and got 2 years $38.5M. The Reds gave $8M a season to Pagan and he's roughly as good and as old as Topa.
  8. Except the really valuable part of that trade would be the prospects, not Polanco, and now they have more prospects.
  9. Ultimately I think he was bidding against Toronto which is why Justin Turner signed with the Jays right after the Polanco trade went through. The Cubs and Giants are both more interested in Chapman.
  10. I'm pretty certain of that. The Twins did get the best possible package for Polanco. I'm surprised they were able to get that much considering there weren't many bidders besides Seattle. Great job getting Trader Jerry to bid against himself. Market rate starting pitcher (and they obviously needed one) Cheap, good reliever with 3 years of arbitration salaries (another obvious need) Top 100 prospect outfielder (The Twins know how to scout outfielders) Throw-in pitching prospect $8M It's getting an extra $8M from a mid-market team that really puts this one over the top for me. It was fair before they added the cash.
  11. The Twins front office prioritized lowering their payroll even more. Looking like $125M will be the limit which is sad for a contending team.
  12. De Scla (this is the hard part but the "Disco" nickname helps) fini
  13. I agree with the former but not the latter. Polanco didn't even have a spot in the starting infield and they were in the position of giving serious bullpen innings to Jordan Balazovic. Topa makes this neutral for the 2024 roster.
  14. There are several bats who can replace what Polanco would give them as a DH for less money than they were paying Polanco.
  15. Putting payroll firmly at 19th in baseball, barely ahead of the Royals and Tigers. The $2M extra from the Mariners reminded me of Billy Beane getting someone to fill his soda machine. The Twins are spending like they expect to not have any local TV broadcasts in 2024.
  16. Dallas Keuchel pitched 37 innings for the Twins last season. I see DeSclafini as the #6 starter. Varland will get optioned if everyone is healthy on Opening Day but with DeSclafini and Paddack in the rotation I see Varland getting 25 starts just like Ober did last year.
  17. IMO you're completely wrong. Starters who were worse than DeSclafini was last year are getting $15M+ deals this offseason and relievers like Topa are getting $8-10M a season. Pitching gets a premium.
  18. DeSclafini is contract ballast. He's the 3rd best player the Twins got in the deal.
  19. If he performs he'll be available again at the trade deadline.
  20. I will take the waiver wire over Balazovic for the last spot in the bullpen.
  21. Gordon sticks if they trade a different infielder or two (Polanco, Farmer). I agree that they don't have room for all of their current infielders on the 26 man roster.
