    The alternative is trading all of those players earlier because you didn't buy out any free agent years. It makes your competitive window smaller and doesn't save you any money.

    The Twins should absolutely give team-friendly extensions to their arbitration eligible players. If they want to maintain a $120M payroll they should absolutely trade the final seasons of those contracts for prospects. Arbitration buyout contracts are net assets, not liabilities. The weird contract is Correa. I don't understand why they gave Correa $36M if they want to run a $120M payroll.

    You're really going with Mookie Betts as a reasonable comp for Willi Castro?

    Utility players do not command a premium in free agency. Bogaerts and Marcus Semien got $25M a season. Bregman got $20M. Chris Taylor gets $15M. I think $12-$15M is top-end of the market for Willi Castro.

    According to Kris Atteberry he's had a chronic injury since the end of last season. That means the Twins tendered a contract to an injured player and let him perform poorly for months.

    Because he's injured all the time and it would be hard to turn down $80M guaranteed.

    Chance #1 was last off-season. Chance #2 is this off-season. If he puts up a full healthy season in 2025 he will probably not sign a team friendly extension, and they will have to look at trading him during the 2026 offseason.

    With his injury history and age it could be career ending. Scoping a shoulder is always bad news for a pitcher.

    Not signing him is also a huge risk for a team on a tight budget.

    The MRI says otherwise. "Weeks to months" of recovery. Ryan's season is probably done.

    Long-term 5 years I'm fine with. Teams who lock up arbitration eligible players usually end up with a tradeable asset at the end of the contract (see Polanco). The Twins would be stupid to let all of their players go through arbitration and walk as free agents when they could flip the expensive but still below market rate seasons for prospects instead.

    Lee with a bad shoulder is still outplaying 2024 Kyle Farmer.

    Thank you for illustrating why everyone decided to cut the cord in the first place and why I am fine not seeing the Twins as long as I never have to deal with cable television companies again.

    We have seen Jhoan Duran perform a LOT better than this.

    I would keep Farmer in the minors for the maximum 20 days of his rehab or until someone else needs to go on the injured list. Lee is playing good defense and his bat will develop faster in the majors than against bad AAA pitching.

    No club can field an all-veteran team for $120M. You'd better get used to rooting for new players.

    I don't think it's likely they will be able to get a cheap #2 starter for a good utility infielder with one year of control remaining.

    Like the article stated an arbitration award of $6M is likely. $12M is Jeff McNeil / Nico Hoerner money so I guess that's possible for his free agent seasons. That would make a 3 year / $30M contract fair but still tradeable if one of the minor leaguers improves and they want to deal him later.

    If Castro is "stealing" playing time from Julien and Keaschall then Buxton is stealing playing time from Keirsey, Correa is stealing playing time from Diego Castillo and Joe Ryan is stealing playing time from Randy Dobnak.

    I buy this. I don't think the best players are necessarily getting that much better. It's the worst pitchers and hitters that are better than what we saw previously. The standard deviation in talent is smaller today than it was then. Considering the amount of talent available, we are long overdue for expansion. Defense is another story. With fewer balls in play, grass fields and less foul territory we are seeing players selected more for offense than for defense. Mark Belanger doesn't get playing time in 2024.

    I hope that the players are taking the off day to keep up on their conditioning and strength training. That was something overlooked during the 1980s.

    With 20/20 hindsight they should have traded BOTH Polanco and Julien and given the job to Willi Castro.

    There was a week-long break for the All-Star Game not even a month ago. I understand the need for recovery but total innings pitched is a bad way to measure fatigue.
