You are in a very small minority that acknowledged the BAM revenue. This is not a big deal in the larger scheme of things. The league did a great job of making the game more watchable. Now they need to make it available. What I find implausible is the notion passed around here that the failure to achieve wider availability is the product of lack of effort, incompetence or just generally wanting to get it done. That's just silly. I had commented months ago I was very hopeful that the whole fiasco is a great opportunity and I believe that's still the case. There is so much we simply don't know. It is quite likely that getting to a distribution model they want will take some time. It's hard enough to navigate the changes in a well-established model with 20 year contracts, Throw in bankruptcy courts and last minute investors, etc and it's just often not possible to implement change as quickly as it's needed. I really doubt the problem is incompetence or lack of desire as is often suggested by frustrated fans.

I think it is accurate to say the drop in TV revenue was reported as the reason for the drop in payroll. That does not make it an accurate representation. Without a doubt, you gents know revenue was also reduced by an additional $30M in BAM revenue. No doubt it's makes for a more popular position to ignore this fact but those dollars spend the same way TV revenue spends and those dollars contributed to record spending last year.

I am rather indifferent to this signing. However, my belief (hope) is that Kirilloff will get most of the starts against RHP. Santana was not bad the last two years against LHP. His wRC+ against lefties last year was 118 and it was 133 in 2022. Hopefully Rocco can utilize him accordingly. My guess is they wanted a 1 year deal so they didn't have to rely on Miranda or Severino but have the option to insert them if they make a strong case. That's not a problem unless they refuse to cut bait if Santana looks washed up.

Desclafani health
Major League Ready replied to Hawkeye Bean Counter's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If they put him on today, he would only be unavailable for the 1st 2 weeks of the season. -
If the rumors about Lorenzen / Syndergaard are true, something has to give. One of them or DeSclafani needs to pitch out of the BP or in a piggyback role. Using Paddack and one of these guys in a piggyback role makes sense.

It's an interesting situation. I was thinking none of them would be on the opening day roster unless one of them looked fantastic in spring training. Winder and Sands need to prove they belong and Staumont needs to prove he is healthy and as you said able to throw strikes. What about Duran / Jax / Stewart / Thielbar / Topa / Okert / Jackson / Alcala to begin the season? Jackson is nothing special but they signed him to a big league contract and he does not have any options.

Winder and Sands also have an option remaining so there would be no need to roster them based on options Why one of them above Staumont?

I am going to take a leap and say they still sign another starter.

You forgot Martin, Doc. He is the guy I am really pulling for because it would be a huge plus if he steps up while we are waiting for E-Rod and others to find their way to the show. Especially with the need to back-up Buck. Lee and Martin making their way to the ML level impacts the other roster spots as well. Farmer's departure would be covered. They could go to a system like Chpettit19 suggested where Lee/Lewis/Correa/Julien and Kirilloff play everyday with one of them DHing. If one is injured, they have an "extra" infielder. That's especially effective with Castro and Martin in utility roles. Holy crap that's a deep team with great positional flexibility.

I doubt the Twins would listen to the voice of a 16 game stretch. This is not a SSS, it's tiny.

A) There is no way in hell Montgomery is taking a one year deal. B) We don't know the net reduction in the TV deal given there is a court order expressly forbidding the publication of contract details. We know revenue went down my $30M (BAM) plus some portion of the TV contract. Best guess is a net reduction of $45-50M.

I would be ecstatic if he showed the type of dominance that proved he was ready by June.

The Twins Chose This Payroll Path
Major League Ready replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The articles suggest that the payroll production is purely a product of the TV deal. Is the writer uninformed or did he just elect to omit the $30M revenue the Twins received from BAM last year? The total for their six inexpensive veterans ($3.5M) is listed but the fact that our top 5 players will receive $100M next year is not detailed. Nor is the logical conclusion that we would have $125M+ invested in six players next year had we signed one of the top free agents. Articles like this should come with a disclaimer letting the reader know they have a biased point of view and the facts will be presented accordingly.- 69 replies

The Twins Chose This Payroll Path
Major League Ready replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
These are two quite different issues IMO. Of course, we all want them to spend as much as possible. I was simply pointing out that there is a tendency here to only acknowledge the elements that suggest they are not spending enough. This group knows they got $30M in BAM money. Yet, only a couple people acknowledged this very simple fact throughout all of these discussions. I really do appreciate fanaticism for our team right up to the point where people become irrational to the point of ignoring something this simple. Where previous spending is concerned, they did exactly what people are asking for. The spent aggressively. I would also point out that they understood they had several contracts coming off after 2023 and therefore could afford Correa, Lopez, and Vazquez. Gray, Mahle, Maeda, Gallo, Taylor, Pagan, and Solano were all coming off and Polanco/Kepler were options for additional reductions. Those signings were needed and I am sure none of us would have preferred they avoided them because it might make things tight a couple years later.- 69 replies

The Twins Chose This Payroll Path
Major League Ready replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There were some unusual circumstances last year but there is one nobody seems to want to acknowledge. They got $30M in BAM money. Yet, unless I missed it, there has not been a single mention of this fact in any of the TD articles written on the topic. If we expect them to push payroll up when they have an increase in revenue we should also expect it to go down if revenue goes down.. That said, I still think they have a little wiggle room for another addition.- 69 replies

IDK exactly what prevented a streaming deal but the need to end blackouts and the cord cutting trend was likely not the problem. It does not take a sophisticated business mind or anything more than a modest awareness of the issues with viewership. It's just not complicated. What is complicated is complicated is orchestrating a long-term deal to meet the legal rights and interests of all the parties. I am sure the league has some long-term interests that they don't want to jeopardize. It looks to me like the Twins could not sign a deal with Bally and a streaming deal that met their long-term agenda. Obviously, IDK this but that's what reading between the lines would suggest. If they were so incompetent as to have not assessed all of their options and started negotiations a year or more ago, yes, that would be a puzzling level of incompetence. It's just really hard to believe it didn't happen because they did not understand the need.

He is not a good candidate for a platoon player to replace LH hitters. It's true that his career splits are slightly better from the right side but what is not mentioned is that his OPS was still well below average from the right side in 2021-22 and he only had 23 ABs from the right side in 2020. His career OPS from the left side is.690. It's not any better against RHP but his 2023 was much better at .801 while only .636 from against LHP. Farmer and Santana should be the INF platoon players. Hopefully Martin forces his way up or they give us a nice surprise by signing Jorge Soler.

For all we know they plan to piggyback Varland and Paddack. If one clearly emerges, they could take the starter role with the other going to the pen or they could keep them together if they dominate in a piggyback role.
