  1. that’s the Berrios arbitration logic too. If you give an inch, they’ll take a mile, and it’s up to you to manage prices.
  2. We don’t know what the alternative prospects offered were. I think it’s highly likely one of the glut of outfield prospects were offered. I’d rather have Graterol than lose too much on a trade for Maeda. I like Maeda, but not at the cost of two top ten pitching prospects. Part of this is the state of the Twins rotation. In the zombie apocalypse, always leave a bullet in the mag to do yourself in before the horde can overtake you. They’re going to have to make more moves. Giving up too much value for Maeda now means not being able to make another trade later.
  3. I’m really excited for Maeda for Graterol as a fair trade. I don’t care about Dodgers and Sox part and the Twins shouldn’t have to pay more to facilitate that trade. If the Dodgers aren’t willing to pay more for Betts and Price the Twins shouldn’t foot that bill.
  4. as we have met, you know I am not retired. I actually don’t sleep much...
  5. Falvine went to the Arb hearing with Gibson in their first offseason.
  6. If you read the source LEN3 http://m.startribune.com/brusdar-graterol-stays-with-twins-as-their-portion-of-baseball-megadeal-falling-through/567695262/ “ According to two sources with knowledge of talks, the Twins were very pessimistic Saturday” Pessimistic does not mean they are out. It means they are exerting what little leverage they have. They were pessimistic on Donaldson too.
  7. According to Feinsand, Twins could be in talks with the Dodgers for Maeda independent of Boston. Also, Dodgers and Sox are trying to bring in other teams on the trade. https://mobile.twitter.com/Feinsand/status/1226290283031166976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-37546590552571846850.ampproject.net%2F2001281851410%2Fframe.html
  8. Nope, not official. The MLBTR article references LEN3 http://m.startribune.com/brusdar-graterol-stays-with-twins-as-their-portion-of-baseball-megadeal-falling-through/567695262/ LEN3 says the Twins are pessimistic, they haven’t pulled out yet according to the source. There may be other sources saying they’ve pulled out. Not that one.
  9. I have already done 1,2,3,5,7 and working on 9- up to episode 5... It’s going to be a long 15 days
  10. Joe Benson is listed as a free agent, but only has MiLB stats to 2015. My guess is he hasn’t done the retirement paperwork yet Oswaldo Arica is still playing in the Mexican Leagues
  11. Can the Twins really afford to let Graterol mature in AA and AAA for 1-2 more seasons? They are in win now mode and still only had Pineda and Berrios under contract for 2021. They needed a mid-rotation or better starter. Boston needed another pitching prospect not too far from the majors. Boston can afford to let Graterol build his endurance in the minors for a couple years. Twins could do that, but it wouldn’t necessarily fill their hole in the rotation for 2021, let alone 2020. Seems like each of the three teams got what they needed out of the trade.
  12. https://www.baseball-reference.com/about/war_explained_pitch.shtml Baseball reference down a ways has a good explainer detailing the differences between bWAR and fWAR. The heading is “ How this Compares to FanGraphs Pitcher WAR” and it’s roughly the 14th bolded heading. I like FIP in my WAR as it holds home runs steady across league average, but comparing the two can give you some quick and dirty flavor as to how the pitcher earned their WAR.
  13. I really like Graterol, but Maeda is a very good starter to get back. At first blush, I like this move but it is in no way a “fleecing” in the Twins favor. Seems like a fair trade.
  14. Marwin isn’t accused of breaking the law. He was a part of a team that broke the rules of a game. Due process is a function of a collective bargaining agreement. What if anything is to be done about this would be employment law not criminal law. The league has already said they aren’t seeking punishment for players. They needed the players to corroborate to go after team management. What ever the Twins do has more to do with forecasting Marwin’s value compared to alternatives for his roster spot.
  15. Arbitration only carries over on trades and waiver claims. Since he was cut and passed through waivers he became a free agent to sign as he pleases.
  16. It never occurred to me that Marwin might not be a lock until the OP. There’s now a shadow of a doubt in my mind...
  17. I reinvest my dividends on my employee discounted shares. Man that grew well and is readily accessible as a medium term savings (rather than a long term account like my 401k, Roth, and IRA for retirement). I save for target purchases like a car or home renovations. Getting 10% return on investment in share growth plus the compounding of dividends gets me an extra share per quarter plus the 15% discount means I get a huge premium over a 2% savings account and even greater savings over a home equity or car loan. Just need to sell enough shares to cover my purchase plus capital gains tax. To top it all off, because it’s an employee plan, I can increase my savings rate 1% per year and not even feel it. So if you work for a publicly traded company, take advantage of your benefits!
  18. TLDNR Jk I skimmed a bit though.... is the three batter or complete the half inning minimum an impact to your very thoughtful post? From what I’ve heard, the 4th rotation spot is Thorpe’s for the taking. This would color Chacin as Homer Bailey insurance. To simplify things a bit and even out the workload, 13 pitchers and a 3 batter rule would lend itself well to a 4 out opener for the 5th rotation spot (and the 3rd until Pineda returns). That would give you a long man, 5 setup men, a closer and an opener.
  19. sure, even into 2021, there could be some volatility with significant and growing populations unable to participate in markets. There was significant volatility with SARS too. The markets rebounded.
  20. The Matt Walbeck story was really great! SF 24, KC 21.
  21. Found this article (partially by Aaron Gleeman) that agreed with you. https://tht.fangraphs.com/another-look-at-the-johan-santana-trade/ Johan put the ultimatum down. Trade me to a team on my list by December x 2008 or don’t trade. At that point 72 hours to sign an extension and the deal is done, or else he wouldn’t give the OK on the trade. The Twins could have taken the picks. Johan would have pitched well for them as it was a walk year. Honestly the picks probably would have worked better for them...
  22. yeah, the deal they got was the worst of both. Trade him for a good return or keep him. Don’t trade for the sake of trading him.
